“Heather Blanton is blessed with a natural storytelling ability, an ‘old soul’ wisdom, and wide expansive heart. Her characters are vividly drawn, and in the western settings where life can be hard, over quickly, and seemingly without meaning, she reveals Larger Hands holding everyone and everything together.”

I write Christian Historical Western Romance. Yes, that often entails the use of firearms in a threatening manner. Sometimes there are fistfights. There may even be politically incorrect but historically accurate language. But also, there is always an inspirational message and strong allusions (at least) to the gospel.

Thanks for the question, Denise!

The Southern Folklife Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill is one of the finest historical collections in the country. It focuses, obviously, on Southern life. In a folklore class I took back in 2010, we studied a gentleman named Henry Berry Lowry (or Lowrie). The Lumbee Indians consider him a hero, sort of in the vein of Robin Hood. He was a man of mixed blood who was victimized by the ridiculous racist laws of North Carolina, but rather than cower or hide, Henry fought. He butted heads with the local sheriff and even had more federal troops after him than Jesse James. It is a fascinatingly bitter story.

Anyway, at one point, his wife and a relative's wife were arrested and used as bait. Henry was ticked off about that! He wrote the sheriff a note (written in pencil in beautiful script and everything was spelled correctly) that said, "Release our wives tomorrow by noon or you will call down such trouble as you cannot imagine." The sheriff released the ladies. Henry killed more people than the James Gang. He hid in the swamp to avoid capture. Legend says he had a pair of boots with heels on the toes to confuse trackers.(less)

“Jacob, what's wrong with you? Why would you want to do this? What kind of husband . . . what kind of man are you?”
“I don't know.” Jacob's voice was a whisper. “But before I pledged myself to Annie, I pledged myself to God.”
“I hope you know what you're doing.” Montrose glanced back towards the kitchen. In their silence, they heard Annie's low sobs. “I hope it's worth it.”

“Please listen, because this is where the church and her leaders have a tendency to get sidetracked. Jesus came to save, not condemn (see John 3:17), as evident in his dealings with the adulterous woman. However, not condemning does not mean condoning what she did. We have to manage and not ignore this tension.”
