The Benefits Of Being Busy
I used to think that I worked best when I had no interruptions, that my best writing was achieved when real life wasn’t getting in the way. These days, I’m not so sure.
Of course, there are those bits of real life that really derail you, like Leggedon did me. This year is all about trying to regain that lost year. But I’m finding I’m at my most productive when writing is “something else I do”.
It’s possible that I’m more organised now, that my ToDo list resides somewhere other than my head allo...

Jay Lake (1964 – 2014)
I never got to meet Jay Lake, a fact that I’m very sorry about.
You see back in 2006 I decided to take my fiction seriously. I was presented with an opportunity to dedicate some time to my craft and decided to go for it. Looking back now, it’s easy to see I was right to believe in my talent as a writer. But back then? I thought I could just be some deluded, talentless fool who thought their idea for a book about vampires, aliens and little old ladies was the best idea ever.
I knew no-one in the...

Trying Out ToDoist
As regular blog visitors will know, last year I embarked on a productivity drive to make up for time lost due to the leg injury. It’s proved very effective and I’ve managed to accomplish a lot since implementing it including a lot of writing and organising the trip of a lifetime in total secrecy. Even so, I always feel like I’m slacking.
Having returned from America and slowly coming down from a huge adrenaline rush, the past two weeks I’ve felt really sluggish. In order to keep my focus for t...

This article for GPSTracklogwas published a few weeks ago whilst I was away in the USA. In it, I show you how you can take your planned route, and using GSAK, turn it into an itinerary, so that you and your caching crew know at all times which cache you are heading to, and which one is next. Jury Duty
So I have returned home to a week I have just blocked out as “comedown”. I’m tired, jetlagged and missing new friends I made on the trip. However, something exciting got announced yesterday that I’ve been keeping quiet for a couple of weeks… I’m on a jury for the British Fantasy Awards, specifically the jury for Best Film / Television Episode. For obvious reasons I won’t be talking about the work I’m doing for it, but I’m both thrilled and honoured to be asked and hope we do the award proud.
D...

Epic Comedown
(or what happened days 8 – 10)
I’ve been a bit slow writing this up, in part because we were pretty busy but also in part I didn’t want to write the part where I talked about some of our group leaving us. Day 8 saw only 6 of the group continue. We also said goodbye to a couple of guides. They’d been fantastic the past week and after such a jam-packed week it was like saying goodbye to old friends.
We headed North from Oklahoma passing through Kansas and into Nebraska (our 10th state on this roa...
