Two Classics

I read two classics this past summer: Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey and Dostoevsky’s Devils. I was maybe two hundred pages into Devils when I realized, with a measure of surprise, that the book reminded me of Jane Austen. Not the political revolution, of course, or the atheism and murder; the book’s conclusion, in which Dostoevsky briskly mowed down half his cast, shows everything that Dostoevsky

A quick, interesting review of ancient Greek history. The narrative is a bit sharp and opinionated sometimes, but that makes it fun.

“Do you know the secret of my success, Alamiri? It is not that I am a great warrior, or that I am cunning or strong - though all those things are true. The secret of my success is that I am bold enough to do what nobody else dares.”

“Bad is so bad, that we cannot but think good an accident; good is so good, that we feel certain that evil could be explained.”
G.K. Chesterton

“In this world, there must be a certain degree of honor just as there must be a certain amount of light. When there are many men without honor, there will always be some others who bear in themselves the honor of many men.”
Jose Marti

“We can't win against obsession. They care, we don't. They win.”
Douglas Adams, Life, the Universe and Everything

“Nothing appeals to intellectuals more than the feeling that they represent 'the people'. Nothing, as a rule, is further from the truth”
Paul Johnson

“. . . I still hold two truths with equal and fundamental certainty. One: the British did terrible things to the Irish. Two: the Irish, had they the power, would have done equally terrible things to the British. And so also for any other paired adversaries I can imagine. The difficulty is to hold on to both truths with equal intensity, not let either one negate the other, and know when to emphasize one without forgetting the other. Our humanity is probably lost and gained in the necessary tension between them both. I hope, by the way, that I do not sound anti-British. It is impossible not to admire a people who gave up India and held on to Northern Ireland. That shows a truly Celtic sense of humor.”
