Writing Forward, Writing Back

I'm deep in the middle of writing Mockingbirds2, the first novel I've written under contract. Which means it's the first novel I have an official, publisher-declared deadline for. If you're keeping track, that deadline is August.

Gulp.

Yes. August. As in three months from now.

But I have never met a deadline I couldn't meet, so the deadline doesn't scare me. What's interesting though is how to approach said deadline. Knowing the book is going to wind up in very specific hands and in front of v...

Re-reading the Classics

I love new books. I love reading what's current. I love being up on the trends in young adult literature. But I also believe it's equally important to return to our roots now and then. So I just finished re-reading John Knowles' "A Separate Peace." I remember liking it when I read it the first time in high school. After re-reading, I remember why. (Though I suspect I have added appreciation for it with the accumulation of years and life experiences.) It's precisely what a book should be...
