saying goodbye to NY and coming home!!

When I left NY a couple weeks ago it was sad to have to say goodbye to Laura Linney the boys and the play.  Before I left Laura and I went on a date and had the most insane ice cream at Lula's Sweet Apothecary blog about Lula's to come so stay tuned.  

I spent my last few days in NY packing cleaning-up and doing lots of dishes.  Doing the dishes felt so good.  It's like meditation for me… very satisfying.  I know it's weird but it's so nice to have the results and prog...

my easter brunch at counter

A few weekends ago Lonneke check out her website Organice Your Life and I went to Counter in NYC for Easter Brunch.  It was delicious!  

We shared the Mini Muffins with fruit spread and housemade nutella.  When I was 17 and living in Paris I used to eat Nutella by the jar!  Regular Nutella is made with not so great ingredients like dairy and sugar but Counter makes their own without the dairy which was fun to eat.

We also had their French Toast hands down the best French Toast in all of NYC ...

A while back I went to a raw food convention in Jamaica.  Raw chef Juliano Brotman was giving a lecture and during this lecture he mentioned the importance of clean not toxic-nail-painted hands in the kitchen as we were using our hands for much of the preparing. I found another recipe on Louisa Shafia's website www.lucidfood.com that looks great.  It's a recipe for Simple Smokey Beet Cakes.

Louisa writes "These cakes are meaty and rich with a smokey caramelized flavor. They taste of the onions and spices as much as they do of beets leading me to believe that the recipe would lend itself to other root vegetables like sweet potatoes carrots or turnips."... So if you end up making them with other root veggies let me know how it turns out.

celebrate arbor day

Arbor Day is coming up on April 30th.  It began in 1872 in Nebraska when Julius Sterling Morton a journalist and politician thought that Nebraska's landscape and economy would benefit from the planting of trees.  Morton worked to improve agricultural techniques in the state and throughout the entire country.  Even before Arbor Day began he planted orchards trees for shade and wind breaks on his own farm setting a great example and giving inspiration to other Nebraskans.
