The Chess Piece (From My Haunted Life Too)

A friend of mine once told me this story on a Halloween many years ago. It chilled me to the bone. Whether it is true or not, I am not sure, although he swore on his mother’s grave that it was.

In the late 1970s, the central cemetery in west Hull was a real eyesore. It was overrun with trees, bushes and weeds, and it was used as a place for all sorts of illicit activities. Most people gave it a very wide berth indeed. Many of the graves in the cemetery are Victorian, and they are grandiose monstrosities of a bygone era. It is a pretty damned creepy place in fact. These days, the whole area has been cleaned up, tidied and is actually worthy of a visit. However, back then, it was a place to be avoided if at all possible.

My friend was walking home, somewhat tipsy, from the pub with a couple of other friends that night in the late 1970s. They thought it might be scary fun to take a trip through the cemetery. Who wouldn’t? They decided to walk across it, and while picking their way between overgrown and fallen tombstones, heavy undergrowth and trees, to their horror, they came to an area where many of the graves had been tampered with. Whether for theft or some other macabre reason, in this area in the middle of the cemetery lay scattered bones and open graves with coffins and contents partially exposed. Horrified, the three friends began to hurry, totally creeped out by the place and what they saw there.

This is where it gets interesting, however, because at this point, my friend accidentally kicked something as he moved as swiftly as possible through this darkened field of bones. To his utter horror, he realized that it was a human skull as he watched it rolling away into the undergrowth.

He told me that in a moment of pure madness, he decided to take it with him. Gingerly picking up the skull, he ran with his two friends to the nearest way out of the creepy cemetery. Having escaped from the cemetery, he stuffed the trophy skull in his bag, and they all went home.

When he arrived home, he took out the skull and examined it. It grinned back at him and was in good condition. He was actually quite proud of his fearlessness and, with some satisfaction, he placed the skull on his bedside table for further inspection and cleaning the next morning before he passed out to sleep.

skull

Awakening the next morning, instead of the skull that he and his friends had collected the night before, he was shocked to find a large, carved ivory chess piece sitting on the table. The chess piece was carved in the form a man. This freaked him out no end. Where was the skull? Where had this come from? He later confirmed with his mates that he had taken a skull from the cemetery, but that skull was now a large ivory chess piece. The chess piece was even scarier to him than the skull. It seemed to have a dark presence around it and, after a couple of days, he and his friends returned it to where they had found it—during daylight. They left it back in the cemetery where they felt that it belonged.

Did the chess piece turn back into a skull, we wonder? Or did he simply imagine that it was a skull initially? We will never know.

This short true story appears in My Haunted Life Too – available for pre-order now and released on Kindle on 17th December. You may also like the first volume – My Haunted Life – Out now.

Still Scared of the Dark?

Scared of the dark. That’s a funny expression if you think about it. It’s not that we are scared of the dark but of what might be hidden in that darkness.

I know that growing up and if I am truly honest, even now from time-to-time, I am afraid of the dark. Too many terrifying experiences – some even shared – to discount the idea that sometimes the dark isn’t actually hiding something. These days, it is more the memory of things that once happened that can have my heart palpitating, my palms sweaty and the back of my neck hot and prickly! These days, I am able to consciously bring matters under control quite quickly and that is usually all it takes to control the fear. I learned this technique studying magic. Mental discipline is part of the training in all magical systems and it is a basic requirement.

I came to the conclusion several years ago that many unwanted supernatural experiences were happening because of my fear. Whether you believe in the supernatural or not, this can be explained as either something feeding off the fear or my fear creating the experience in my mind. It matters not because I believe both are the same anyway – everything I experience I create in my mind. This is why mental discipline is a key part of magical training.

These days, my fear of the dark is primarily a fear of what may be inside of me in my inner make up rather than anything that might be out there. Know thyself is another part of magical training and as we dig deep into our own psyche, we can meet aspects of ourselves we would rather remained buried and in the dark. However, we need to shine light on these negative aspects of ourselves and try to balance them if we are to progress. Perhaps the hardest thing is to be critical of ourselves and to recognize and come to terms with our flaws, shortcomings and plain evilness. The Great Work is the process by which we constantly boil and condense, heat and cool, wash and burn, the aspects of our selves seeking the transformation of these baser elements in to the pure gold we should be. It is a lifetime’s work as we often are oblivious to our own flaws only recognizing them as we gain experience.

The darkness is both outside and inside of us and I have come to understand that the darkness inside is projected out to the darkness on the outside. I am still afraid of the dark because it hides things about myself I have yet to discover, balance or conquer.

About G. Michael Vasey

G. Michael Vasey is a Yorkshire man and rabid Tigers fan that has spent most of his adult life lost deep in Texas and more lately, in the Czech Republic. While lucky enough to write for a living as a leading analyst in the commodity trading and risk management industry, he surreptitiously writes strange poems and equally strange books and stories on the topics of metaphysics, the occult and the paranormal on the side, hoping that one-day, someone might actually buy them.

After growing up experiencing ghosts, poltergeist and other strange and scary experiences, he developed an interest in magic and the esoteric. These days he fancies himself as a bit of a mystic and a magician to boot. Most of his inspiration for his scribbling comes from either meditation or occasionally, very loud heavy metal music.

He has appeared on radio shows such as Everyday Connection and X Radio with Rob McConnell to tell strange and scary stories. He has also been featured in Chat – Its Fate magazine and interviewed by Ghost Village and Novel Ideas amongst others.

He blogs addictively at http://www.garymvasey.com and he tweets micro thoughts at gmvasey. He also reviews a lot of very weird books at strangebookreviews.com.

Expectation and the Power of Prayer

A few weeks ago, someone posted in the local Brno-based group on Facebook that the supermarkets here always had empty shelves and that they couldn’t find a number of food items that they were used to in Germany. Politely, I made the comment that I never had experienced that problem and pointed them to a number of locations stocking the items that they needed. I also made the remark that we must live in parallel universes. Not knowing me, that comment was taken the wrong way but I actually meant it. To me, this was another example of magic at work. We get what we expect.

The German plainly had an expectation contrary to mine, that the supermarket shelves were often empty and, as a result, they were. On the other hand, my expectations are that supermarkets are well stocked and for me, they are. I expect poor customer service here and thats often what I get. My fault. I should try better to expect good customer service!

A couple of weeks ago, my salary was sent early from the USA due to the holidays there. The money should have arrived by Wednesday. On Thursday, it had not arrived and I began to worry that it had got lost. Modern banking isn’t reliable and they do make mistakes. About every 4 months, my money goes missing. It vaporizes into thin air between the US and the Czech Republic and none of the banks will ever admit it is their fault nor that they know where my money is. Usually, it either eventually arrives or it ends up back in our company account in the USA. The problem is that as soon as the money isn’t there, I begin to expect that the banks have yet again screwed it up. This time, however, I decided I wasn’t going to let that happen. My remedy was to pray. Yes – pray.

I sat and I focused my mind. God is everywhere, all knowing and all seeing. I thanked the all knowing, all seeing Deity for my blessings and then asked that my money show up the next day. I pictured the money sitting on my account. I visualized my money being in my bank account when I checked it online the next morning. I made myself believe that there was no possible way for it not to be there. There was not a shadow of a doubt in my mind since the Deity is all seeing, all knowing and all powerful, there was nothing else to do but confidently await the next day. The money was of course there.

This is how prayer works. This is how magic works and this is how we create reality.

Perhaps a good example of this is when you simply know something is so. There are times when I know that Hull City will win or lose or draw. I don’t mean I fancy a win or a loss I mean I KNOW. I am always right in these instances without fail. The KNOWING is faith in an outcome so strong that no other outcome is possible. None.

Prayer is a key part of life and of creating our lives. Proper prayer cannot fail to produce results. Proper prayer involves visualization and it can be a willful act of magic. Prayer should be a conversation with the Creator that begins with thanks and gratitude. Give it a try. It works.

Haunted Paintings

G. M. Vasey:

Here is a story from this blog that also you will find in My Haunted Life – out now! – Available at http://www.amazon.com/My-Haunted-Life-Stories-Paranormal-ebook/dp/B00P033C9I/ref=pd_rhf_gw_p_img_1

Originally posted on The Wacky World of G. Michael Vasey:

In the run up to Halloween, here is another true and strange tale of the paranormal. I will post a new strange true story each day so don’t miss them.

In fact, paintings sometimes feature strongly in paranormal activity. I will give two additional examples to prove my point.

The first is a story that my father told me a couple of times about his childhood. His mother was a bonafide medium, and he grew up with strange goings on just as I did. In fact, this is why he was sympathetic to my dilemma. Apparently, he and his family had once temporarily lived in a flat on the top floor of a three-story building. On the day that they were moving out, he recalled watching the comings and goings of people moving furniture and belongings. Eventually, all was complete, and he and his mother stood outside of their front…

Ghost Stories

This week will see the launch of my new effort and probably the last book for 2014 – My Haunted Life Too. We will do a cover reveal this week as well so stay tuned. It’s a ferocious cover! My Haunted Life Too is a new set of short stories of the strange and the paranormal but this time, the stories are about people around me as opposed to things I have experienced directly. Those who have read it say its better than the first as well – scarier. It will be out on Kindle later this week. Of course, all good things come in threes so there will certainly be a third to follow in early 2015. I can probably recast all three as one paperback book too in the end.

I am now interested in ghost and strange stories again as a result of writing these two short books. I am also intrigued by the short story format especially when supplemented by material on this blog. So, no doubt, there will be a few books from me next year along – hopefully – with The Lord of the Elements – the prequel to The Last Observer.

Meanwhile, My Haunted Life is still available at 99 cents on Kindle but only for a couple more days…..

The Mystical Hexagram – Countdown Deal

For the first week of December, we have set up an Amazon countdown deal for the kindle version of The Mystical Hexagram. It will start at 50% off on the 1st December.

hexagramfrontcvr

The book explores a symbol. Not from some scholarly or deeply complex perspective, but seeing it as a representation relating to life and living. The forces and pressures that are associated with the hexagram are, after all the forces of life at both practical and Universal levels. By exploring and beginning to understand the symbol, we are able to learn and discover more about ourselves.

The meditations throughout the book take you on an inner journey of exploration, discovering the parallels between the self and the greater reality within which we live our lives. They illustrate the connection between the inner and outer world of the self and the cosmic forces of Creation. Having traced that connecting path, the meditations offer a practical way of applying that understanding.

In addition to the exercises the book includes two very special meditations, The Garden of Remembrance and the Circle of Healing. These two, we feel, you will want to revisit many times, taking away from the experience a sense of peace and beauty.

“Part intellectual journey, part esoteric exploration, at all times eminently readable, this short book takes us on a voyage of discovery through the deep seas of The Tree of Life, symbolism, Tarot, planets/metals, numerology, astrology, psychology, and alchemy.”

“Amazing book, a work of passion and dedication. This book isn’t simply another in a long line of books, but a true work of Art. A pure love for the subject,”

“Although I will, no doubt, be unraveling its many mysteries for some time, this book has helped shed light on a symbol that has, over the last few years, been a key player in leading me to mysteries of the Universe and my own Truth. For all seekers of truth, put this on your reading list!”

The kindle version can purchased here.

Finally, A Hit?

Recently, I decided to experiment a bit with writing and publishing. I decided to try to broaden my audience a bit and see what worked in terms of covers and content and so on. In writing this blog, I actually generate a lot of material that eventually gets buried and lost in time but is eminently re-usable. I also had the weirdest experiences growing up with ghosts, poltergeist and all sorts of strange paranormal phenomena. I hit upon an idea and wrote My Haunted Life as a small book, primarily designed for the Kindle paranormal and supernatural market. I took some blog articles and turned them into short stories and added several new short stories – all true. I topped and tailed it with some thoughts about reality as it relates to the supernatural and then put it out. It was also meant to double as a bit of a commercial for my earlier books.

At first, it didn’t get much attention. We changed the cover. That helped. We did a one-day free giveaway. That helped a lot. I send it to a review site on Facebook and got 5 reviews – that also helped. Finally, I understood that people looking at the free preview were only seeing an advertisement for The Last Observer and the Introduction which isn’t about ghosts initially anyway. So I edited the content and added a new pre-intro page with bullet points of what was in the book along with a few endorsements. We also did a banner across the cover for today – Black Friday and set it at 99 cents. It will go up in price in a week or so.

Interestingly, it seems to have started to sell. It is also being lent. OK, so its only a minor hit at the moment but it seems to have momentum. Amazon seems to have found it too and is actively merchandising it. Additionally, my other books seem to have started to move too. I think I have learned a lot in this exercise about publishing perhaps as opposed to writing. Thanks in large part to book publicist and fast becoming a friend – Nick Wale. I won’t say exactly what the secret sauces are but I am excited that finally something is happening with my books and My Haunted Life is on the best seller lists (not in the top 10 but still).

The next step in all of this is that in early December, My Haunted Life Too will appear. Probably on Kindle only at first. Let’s see if the momentum can be maintained and even made greater by the new book. The new book has a rather eye catching cover too. Just wait until we reveal it. It will scare the pants off you all! Meanwhile, I have discovered a new interest in the supernatural so expect more in the vein.

Meanwhile, The Lord of the Elements is still being worked on. Hopefully, by the time it comes out, it will have an audience. black friday gary cover new
