Listen and learn – my encounter narrating a life changing book by Lorraine Ansell

How To Create Your Own RealityBeing a professional voice over is great. I learn so many things from the scripts I get sent. Whether it be factual, fictional or a mix, every day is filled with new things to learn. I sit in my studio reading and marking up texts and not just reading, but understanding the words and their meaning. From fun crazy voices to serious news delivery and everything in between I get to voice a lot of creative ideas. One day it might be narrating about training modules, guiding people through various tasks. Another day, an advert. And then on another day it might be an audiobook or poetry. It means that I get the chance to continually learn new things – I should do more quiz nights with the knowledge I am building!

Then once in a while, there comes along a script that really stops me and makes me think. It happened early this year. Usually in January it is all about the New Year, New Year, New goals. Now we all start with good intentions but during the month it can quickly fad away. That exercise or diet regime can fall by the wayside. Those plans you intended to put in place suddenly get lost, caught up in the whirl wind of life and living. But this year that couldn’t have been further from the truth! I had the opportunity to read and narrate text that carried me over the January weeks making it an amazing month. I was lucky enough to get the manuscript for an audiobook by G. Michael Vasey. It was all about creating the NEW YOU. As I marked up the text I began to focus intently on the words and messages in his book.

As I read it to myself I suddenly found myself shaking my head in agreement. Then I began vocalising my agreement. And as if a lightbulb went on, I really began to feel the words. As all artists know, you need to feel engaged and connected to a piece of work. And this is how I began to feel but also so much more. As I started recording I felt that this book would really help not only others but me as well. Phrases sprang out at me, “thoughts are powerful”, “imagination”, “being like a child” and my favourite chapters were all about meditation to visualise and achieve your goals.

I began to meditate on the things that I wanted to work on, both personally and professionally. I followed the book and began my own little mantras. Yes there is that little voice just as the book described that tries to object, hold you back and throw you off your course but I was determined. I put that to one side, put it on the naughty step and carried on.

The more and more I meditated and prayed the more things became clear. What I wanted for me, my life and my voiceover business. That clarity really came into focus and suddenly these past few weeks into the New Year have already been amazing. As I started to create my own reality then amazing things started to happen. More bookings coming through, more and more opportunities to grow and learn. And when I was half way through writing this piece an email came in – I am a finalist for a digital award for my website! Wow, four weeks into this new amazing year and just because I took some time to focus on what I wanted, like a magnet things are coming to me!

This book, so easy to read (and I have read through it at least four times for recording purposes) so clear and easy to digest. And when I recorded the book, I narrated it using the techniques in the book so that the listener can not only hear the words but really listen to them. Vasey talks about magic, control, truth and reality and I hope that my narration is able to give his words that extra little bit of magic for you to find your truth and reality. Enjoy listening to his book, enjoy finding your own reality.

la My thanks to Lorraine for narrating the audio book version of How To Create Your Own Reality – out soon. You can find out more about her at her blog. You can also hear a sample of the book read by Lorraine here.

Magic Is All Around

That magic works is obvious. All you have to do is observe a bit to see magic in action all around you.  Let’s take a few examples of what I am talking about shall we?

The Placebo Effect – defined as follows by Wikipedia – “Also called the placebo response. A remarkable phenomenon in which a placebo — a fake treatment, an inactive substance like sugar, distilled water, or saline solution — can sometimes improve a patient’s condition simply because the person has the expectation that it will be helpful.” The problem I have with this definition is the word ‘fake’. There is nothing fake about the magical power of the subconscious mind! Magic works on faith, belief and imagination. The more that you believe something to be so, the more it will become so. This is why, in magic, we conduct rituals and act out a part, why we dress the part and convince our deep selves that we are the part….
Visualisation – Again, we can use the imagination to convince ourselves that some outcome will occur and magically, it does. Don’t believe me? See this article. Many top athletes pay small fortunes to learn how to visualise their success.
Expectation – How many times have you expected not to find a parking place and then not been disappointed? How about trying it the other way around? Expect a parking place and you will find one.
Music – Have you ever noticed how a particular song can evoke a specific mood? Combine this with ritual and dance and you get something like the famous Haka of the New Zealand Rugby team…..

The fact is that magic is simply imagination via visualisation (or imaginary hearing, feeling etc.), combined with expectation and confidence in its result. Imagination and faith in its effect. Faith can move mountains – and it can!

Actually, there is another aspect to working magic successfully that you won’t find in self-help books. Its rather more difficult to do. Its knowing yourself, reconditioning yourself and learning discipline, control and gratitude….. This is the ‘occult’ aspect – the seeking the hidden true you and understanding what you really are…..

The final secret to magic is energy. If you give something your attention then you give it energy. Everything is energy. Even the things around you that look solid in every aspect are nothing more than representations of energy. That is physics. To give your attention – your singular attention (or in the words of the Bible – to name something) – is to energise it.

So if you want success…. act the part, believe that you are already successful and give your energy to things that will make you successful.

It’s that simple…. but horrendously difficult too, simply due to the fact that we do not know ourselves and we do not focus enough..

This is the subject of my book – How To Create Your Own Reality. It’s all there hidden a bit in the words and structures, but it is all you need to know to become a magician.

Sickened by Conspiracy

Last night, I tapped into the search bar on You tube ‘David Bowie interviews’. I was amazed, saddened and yes, deeply angered by what came up. Video after video proclaiming Bowie a satanist who has faked his own death and much worse. I fear that this has become an epidemic and it is one I personally have no time for whatsoever. Actually, there are two issues at play here. First, the term ‘satanist’ combined with ‘satan’ or ‘the Devil’ and secondly, the idea that people haven’t died – including school kids in the US and famous people like David Bowie.

Let’s deal with the first one first. There are satanists. They do indeed exist. However, all the evidence around David Bowie is that he had an interest in the occult – just like me! Now I know some ignorant people in this world think that occult = satanist but I know better. Occult means ‘hidden’ and what is hidden? The real you! The general idea behind occult study is to study yourself and find the deity within. Bowie wrote and hinted at a fascination with the occult but then, he also wrote the beautiful ‘Word on a wing’. For those unfamiliar with this song on the Station to Station album, I post the lyrics below….

“Word On A Wing” by David Bowie

In this age of grand illusion

You walked into my life

out of my dreams

I don’t need another change

Still you forced away

into my scheme of things

You say we’re growing,

growing heart and soul

In this age of grand illusion

You walked into my life

out of my dreams

Sweet name, you’re born once again for me

Sweet name, you’re born once again for me

Oh sweet name, I call you again

You’re born once again for me

Just because I believe don’t mean I don’t think as well

Don’t have to question everything

in heaven or hell

[CHORUS]

Lord, I kneel and offer you

my word on a wing

And I’m trying hard to fit

among your scheme of things

It’s safer than a strange land

But I still care for myself

And I don’t stand in my own light

Lord, lord, my prayer flies

like a word on a wing

My prayer flies

like a word on a wing

Does my prayer fit in

with your scheme of things?

In this age of grand illusion

You walked into my life

out of my dreams

Sweet name, you’re born once again for me

Just as long as I can see, I’ll never stop this vision flowing

I look twice and you’re still flowing

Just as long as I can walk

I’ll walk beside you, I’m alive in you

Sweet name, you’re born once again for me

And I’m ready to shape the scheme of things

Ooh, ready to shape

the scheme of things [5 times]

The words of a satanist? I think not. Bowie referred to God more than any artist in his songs. I don’t know of one reference to Satan.

David Bowie praying on stage - The Lord's Prayer in fact!

David Bowie praying on stage – The Lord’s Prayer in fact!

However, I did not know David Bowie and I cannot judge him. I’m sure he was as flawed as the next man and tempted beyond belief. That he made it through all of that intact and sober is a testament to his character. I can interpret, but probably I see only what I want to see – thats the nature of reality. The main issue is this. Occultists are not Satanists. They can be but, in my experience they are mostly not. Most of them seek the Christ consciousness or the Higher self within themselves. For me, people who look outwards for the return of a physical Christ are welcome to do so but they miss the entire point – it is the ‘return’ of the Christ within you that you perhaps ought to be seeking for ‘ye are Gods!’

By the way, while I am on a roll, lets reference Satan, The Devil, Lucifer etc. Firstly, these are not the same ‘person’ at all. Lucifer is the light bringer and light is not bad, its good. Satan is any Pagan God demonized by the early Church. In my view, if there is one God then there cannot be two – there can only be one. In which case, if evil exists then it is simply an aspect of the one God beyond our understanding. ie. If I have to spell it out. God is both all things good and all things bad. There is no Satan. There is only God and that God is within you – hidden – until you seek using methods such as prayer, ritual and meditation……

Onto the not dead theory. Bowie is selling a lot of records at the moment that is for sure as did Presley and others like him in the past but it won’t last. Moreover, have some bloody respect for his children, wife and family! The man died. Or are we to believe that anyone successful, popular and charismatic is in fact a satanist who has power over life and death? People who propagate the did not die conspiracies are small-minded, inhuman animals in my opinion who are thoughtless morons. No, I have no time for these people or their stupid conspiracies.

None.

Thoughts On Death

With so many celebrities dying this last couple of weeks, I have been thinking about the subject of death. A theory that particularly caught my imagination was that of Anthony Peake who, using many lines of research, has a theory that we fall out of time at death. There is much more to his theory and those like it that are often picked up by the media that I won’t go into here. However, this thought intrigues me a lot.

I have written about time quite often (for example, see this Bowie motivated post) and via meditation I have decided that time is simply a construct of the human mind to give some context to our experience of life. An aspect of ourselves is eternal or rather timeless. It operates outside of this construct of time. The problem is that, without time or that particular dimension to our existence, we are like the center of the circle. There can be no movement as we simply are. We exist in an eternal moment but actually, we can’t do too much. If you follow me? As soon as we introduce the concept of movement, we are forced to add the concept of time. To move one must have space and time. The eternal point essentially becomes a line. Or perhaps the point is expressed as a line in a different dimension of being? Some of this meditation is expressed in the Mystical Hexagram book.

What Price A Review?

For the last few days, I have been reaching out asking for reviews on Amazon. The take up has been very minimal. I don’t really understand why my books only get one or two reviews probably because I like to review books that I read. Anyhow, if you have read one of my books, do please consider reviewing it on Amazon. It doesn’t have to be a long review, it doesn’t have to be good – just honest.

Meanwhile, I’m quite thrilled to see Your Haunted Lives riding in the top 4 of Amazon UK‘s supernatural category. It has been #1 several times already and that really is gratifying. It’s not doing quite so well in the US though – it’s in the top 100 there in the same category. That is my next goal I suppose – to get the #1 spot in the US as well. Thanks to all who bought the book.

Don’t forget too that Ghosts In The Machines is also now out on audio book read by the talented Darren Marlar – you can hear his voice on the Weird Darkness podcast series btw.

Here is the sample from soundcloud.

Sometimes, You Have to Wonder….

This weekend, I was in Dolni Morava. There is a ski resort of sorts there…. I wasn’t skiing so for a couple of hours or so, I was left to wander around. It was pretty chilly and so I ended up in the restaurant which was packed. I ordered my self a hot chocolate in Czech after waiting my turn. The man, a tall and thin guy, looked at me as if I were and alien. I repeated myself. “Deutsche,” he said. A bit puzzled, I repeated my request in Czech. After all, its not a difficult sentence – “Horka chocolada prosim”. The man looked quite angry – “Deutsche” he said again. “English?” I asked. He repeated, almost spat “Deutsche”. The waitress beside of him looked quite shocked at this and she plainly understood me so I turned to her and repeated my Czech request. The hot chocolate duly arrived and I sat for a while drinking it.

Knowing that my daughter would soon be finishing her skiing, I went back to the man and asked him if he had some hot tea suitable for a child. This time, he seemed to understand but shot back something about only black tea for adults. He then repeated “Deutsche?” “Ne,” I said and left puzzled.

Of course, when Deni came back, we all went back in looking for two coffees and a hot chocolate. I got the same bewildering response form the man. Why on Earth was he asking if I spoke German? Plainly, I was speaking Czech and I assume by my accent, he would know I was English. I stood there, pretty bewildered while repeating my order only for him to ask me “Deutsche”. I said, “English? – its better than German”, in Czech. He didn’t like this at all and started to get angry. Quite frankly at this point I told him to ‘get lost’, I mean there is a limit to anyone’s patience and he had pushed mine. The girl beside him was totally embarrassed and began to make two coffees as I had requested. He told her not to and that no one was to serve me. I was to leave, he said.

I got the girls and as we left I tossed him – We are leaving you asshole. At which, he jumped over the bar, grabbed me by the arm and was about to hit me. Deni, being Deni, got in the middle somehow and I swear was ready to kick him in the shins…. I just looked up calmly into this man’s eyes and said with my mind…”Go on and you will regret it….” It lasted about 45 seconds and then his eyes wavered, he looked down, let go of my arm and I turned away and walked out. He knew, as did I, that he had no excuse for his behaviour and that about 100 sets of eyes were upon him puzzled at his behaviour.

They say you should never judge someone else as you just don’t know what kind of a day they have had or what problems they are facing, but I have to tell you, I have no idea what on earth was making this man behave that way. I was polite, I spoke Czech – I even said “Ale Mluvim Cesky!”(But, I speak Czech!) when he asked me to speak German.

Maybe he was just an anti-English racist – they exist (even within the UK) or, maybe he thought I was an American and hates them too? Who knows?

I just know that it deeply disturbed me and still does. Perhaps, in the end, he just has mental issues. I will never know. Maybe, I had hurt him in a past life? Bizarre. Just bizarre.

The Death of Idols

Idols are really symbols that have a deep meaning that is only understood personally. While an idol may have a life of its own, it’s not possible to be the idol or participate in its experience of life.

David Bowie is one more idol of mine and countless others, that has left to move on somewhere else. Much will be written about him in the next few days. For me, he was a symbol of something that I chose from time to time, to give my attention to. He is a memory trigger of happy times, great people and incredible memories of my life. Whether that be driving to Cornwall listening to kooks with my then best friend Mike in my late teens, or feeling strong as I listened to Heroes in my car in Houston, TX, or, wondering about the greater meaning to life as I listened to Thursday’s Child at home. Every song evokes a memory, an undercurrent of moments in my life – feelings and emotions of times long past and long gone. I’m sure many people experience the same Bowie magic as they listen to the songs and evoke some aspect of themselves in the process.

Music is magical. Music strikes a chord with one’s inner self and resonates with the soul. Musicians are magicians that can coax and evoke these soul feelings within us. Bowie was a worker of great magic. Whoever he was, whatever he was, is actually irrelevant. It’s how he and other musicians/magicians touch our souls that counts.
