Orcs in Space #4 Covers — Including a Lovely Painted Variant by Heidi Black
The fourth issue of Orcs in Space will be hitting stores in September, and this issue wraps up the first arc of the series with a bang (literally)!
I had a lot of fun with my cover for this issue, and did something really different from the previous episodes: A close-up portrait of a blood-spattered Gor saying his catchphrase “Are you ready for some MAYHEM?!”

I like how this cover feels totally different than all the covers that have come before it in the series, and the fact that it shows off a kind of detailed style that in general isn’t what I am doing in the pages of Orcs in Space… The size of this images means you get to really appreciate Gor, warts and all (again, literally). This is my riff of one of those classic “I’m a badass” covers like the very first issue of the Wolverine limited series.
For something completely different, we also have this awesome variant cover by Heidi Black, featuring Mongtar cavorting with D.O.N.A. in the arboretum!

I love this, the colors are so lovely, so many awesome details (you can even see the sentient Flower Dude in the back there!), and the scene is so sweet… I like to think this is the kind of wholesome antics the orcs (especially Mongtar) get up to when they aren’t eviscerating Space Rats! If you don’t know Heidi’s work you can check out much more on their Instagram and website!
Both these covers are now available to preorder from your local comic book shop, just show them the info below and they will set you up!

Process Party

I had the pleasure of being a guest (for the second time!) on one of my fave comics podcasts, Process Party with Mike Dawson and Zack Soto! I had a fantastic time checking in with these old homies and talking about Orcs in Space, hilarious worst practices in comic book shops, and the transition to working on a monthly comic book series:
“I definitely had to change my brain and think about it as a job. It’s my job to get up in the morning, open up the Photoshop file, and start drawing. And draw the page the absolute best I can… But I also have to finish it in a certain amount of time.”
The episode is live on the Study Group website and on Stitcher and wherever you get your podcasts. I for one am hoping that the Party Boys are back for good!

Orcs in Space Advance Reader Copies (ARCS) Available!
Whoa… I can read Orcs in Space Volume One already?!?Hey, this is fun! Advance Reader Copies (ARCs) of Orcs in Space Volume One are currently available for download on several of the big galley sites: Here it is on NetGalley and here it is on Edelweiss.plus. You just have to put in a request!
The deal with ARCs is pretty simple, you get to read an early, perhaps not 100% final edit of the book, and in return you then post an honest review on a site like NetGalley and/or Goodreads (here is the link to Orcs in Space on Goodreads).
If you are interested in taking a look at Orcs in Space Volume One months before its October release and help spread the word on the book, please check it out! I’m eager to hear any feedback you might have, and posting a public review on Goodreads, etc can make a big difference for the success of the book when it is eventually released! Oh, and naturally, while I hope you like the book, don’t hesitate to post a middling or even negative review or rating online! The most important thing for me is to get people’s honest opinions; if you think that Orcs in Space is a 2-star book don’t worry, I won’t get my feelings hurt.
If you have any trouble downloading the ARCs online feel free to drop me a line and I can send you a direct link. I’m also happy to hear any comments or questions you might have over on my Patreon or Instagram (in fact I have been cross-posting a few of those thoughtful questions to my Goodreads profile). Always love to hear what you have to say about my work, or questions about the business of comics in general… Heck, I just like to hear from people!

How to Read Orcs in Space

Some people have been asking me “What is this new thing you are doing? A book? A bunch of books?” so I thought I would try to help with this little chart and blog post! Honestly the comics industry can be weird so I understand the confusion!
Orcs in Space is a new monthly comic book series from Oni Press. I draw it! Every month there will be a new issue on the stands at your local comic book shop. The double issue 1+2 is out now, issue 3 hits in August, and issue 4 in September.
In October, Orcs in Space Volume One comes out! This collects the first four issues (including covers, sketches, etc) in a 100+ page book. Orcs in Space Volume One will be available wherever you buy books… Bookshops big and small, online retailers, and of course comic book shops. Here are some options where you can pre-order the book already!
Pre-order at your Local Comic Book Shop (JUN211669)BookshopIndieBoundAmazonBarnes & NobleIndigoAfter a very short break in October Orcs in Space issue 5 will be out in November, issue 6 in December, etc. Every four issues there will be a new collection! Orcs in Space Volume Two is scheduled for February 2022. The series will be at least 12 issues (AKA 3 books) long.
People sometimes ask me “How should I buy this series?” and the answer is however is the EASIEST and MOST FUN for YOU! If you like reading the series as it comes out, please go to your local comic book shop to pick it up. But if you are more comfortable going to your favorite “normal” bookstore in October and picking up a whole 100+ page book, that is great too! Whatever works best for you.
Thank you for all the support you have given to this series so far, me and the rest of the Orcs in Space crew really appreciate it: Writers Justin Roiland, the Gheith Bros Abed and Rashad, and Michael Tanner, colorists DJ Chavis and Dave Pender, editor Amanda Meadows, and the rest of the good folks at Oni Press. Thank you!

Orcs in Space #3 Covers — Including a Stunning Matt Sheean & Malachi Ward Variant!

Things are moving at a fast and furious pace with Orcs in Space! While you still have a couple days to pre-order the first double issue of OIS it with your local comics shop, but we already have the solicitation for issue #3 in the new PREVIEWS catalog!
This issue boasts two covers: Above you have my standard cover for the issue, showcasing the villainous Space Rats! These steampunk by way of the British Royal Navy (with a touch of the Borg) characters were a ton of fun to design (those of you who know me know I have a soft spot for ratties
). Here are some of my character designs for them:

Next up, we have a straight up gorgeous interpretation of the orcs by two of my favorite comics creators, Malachi Ward and Matt Sheean! I was totally blown away by this amazing, painterly portrait of Mongtar, Gor, and Kravis (sporting five fingers on each hand!) on an alien world, gazing as translucent crystalline space squids drift by in the interstellar void… So beautiful and grandiose! Here is the art sans trade dress so you can really drink it in:

Both these covers are now available to preorder from your local comic book shop, just show them the info below and they will set you up!
