October 12, 2017

Readers of this blog know that I’m obsessed... er... that I’m a big fan, of the Rolling Stones. My parents took me to see a show when I was twelve years old (my very first rock & roll concert!) and since then I’ve seen them play many (many) times, and even traveled to other countries to see them perform.
Like last year, when I dragged my BFF Leigh Court to Argentina to see the Stones play Buenos Aires. (Leigh had discovered some long-lost relatives in Buenos Aires, so she was up for the adventure…)
Same thing happened a couple of weeks ago…  the Stones were playing in Lucca, Italy on September 23, so, since Leigh has relatives in Italy as well, it was time for another girls’ road trip!!
Our Alitalia flight to Italy The whole city of Lucca was in the grip of Stones fever, including the airport in Pisa when we landed. This was the first thing we saw…

There were Rolling Stones posters in every shop window and even in our hotel lobby...

And when we went out to dinner, this was on the restaurant’s blackboard (instead of the daily specials)…

I have to admit, it felt weird but strangely good to have found a town as obsessed with the Stones as I am, LOL! Even the drivers were obsessed…

Lucca is a medieval walled city, and the Stones played just outside the wall, in a spectacular setting. The of day of the show, the venue doors opened at 1pm for a 9pm concert, but fans were ready to go…

As darkness fell, the excitement built, and finally, the Stones hit the stage!

After an amazing night like that, I was more than happy to spend some time with Leigh’s relatives. Quid pro quo. I mean, nobody makes lasagna like Leigh’s aunt Francesca!!!
Until next month,Jenna

How cute is this???

This is a baby Highland cow. Here's what he'll look like when he's all grown up. Not someone I want to anger.

It was definitely one of my husband's goals on our trip to see one of these cows, so I was happy that we saw several of them on a couple of occasions. These specimens were on the Applecross peninsula.

Also on the same peninsula, we saw our only stag. We felt lucky to encounter this animal, which is not as plentiful as the sheep!

Of course, sheep are everywhere in Scotland. They are cute. And they graze by the most gorgeous scenery anywhere. Ocean view, no less. I don't think they appreciate it, however. Eating is a full-time job for sheep!

Of course, the wildlife has the right of way on every road. Believe me, there is no way to pass until they decide to get off the road. The roads are very narrow!

Last but not least, the birds of prey. Here is a falcon we saw at Dunrobin Castle as part of a fascinating display done by the keeper there.

At first, I was not happy to see the birds chained to their roosts. But he explained that he is sent injured birds from all over the UK to rehabilitate them. Before he can do anything, he has to calm them down and keep them secure so they can be healed. After that, they are re-released into the wild. He clearly loved his birds so I hope they're treated well. You can read more about Dunrobin Castle here.

The one category of wildlife which is plentiful in Scotland, but which we did not see, is marine life. We simply ran out of time. Oh well, sounds like a great excuse for another trip!

Which of these animals is your favorite?

FBI Special Agent Addison Davidson needs a husband. Not just any guy, but someone highly skilled in weapons’ training, who has served in combat, Special Forces, hard-charging, and who can handle crises situations under pressure, unattached, and preferably is a cougar shifter like her. Captain Dan Steinacker is one hot cougar, and he takes the bait. Now someone’s trying to kill her. A mole on her team?

Now a sheriff of Yuma Town, Dan can’t quit thinking about the sexy she-cat he’s fallen hard for. He has to convince Addie he’s the cougar for her, and that means taking on the villains, whoever they are. Guns and teeth and claws readied, the cougars aim to win. Learning who and why she’s on someone’s terminal list is their only mission now—before it’s too late.

If you find yourself on the island of Skye, in Scotland, do take this hike known as The Quiraing. It’s in the north of Skye in the area known as ‘Trotternish’, and shows you the craggy, wild landscape of the Scottish Highlands. The view above shows the approach.

And here’s the trail. It was raining fairly hard so the trail was muddy and the grassy areas quite boggy. Despite the less than optimal conditions, the parking lot was full early in the morning. This is a popular hike.

Half the challenge of doing the hike is driving up the windy, single track road. Despite the one lane, this road has two-way traffic. If you look carefully, you’ll see two passing places where one car has to pull over to let the other pass. This is a scary challenge in misty weather, but everyone is polite and the driver with the nearest passing spot will pull over, although sometimes this maneuver requires reversing on the narrow road.

Here’s a closeup view of the cliff face. The drop-offs can be severe.

Finally, we took a picture with a couple of people in it to show the scale. The panoramas are awesome, and no pictures can really do them justice. But they do refresh our memories!

Excerpt from Dreaming of the White Wolf:
***Candice had been writing for two days’ straight, working on her publisher’s book deadline, when she wrote the end, smiled, and set the book aside. She would start proofing it tomorrow after she’d given her brain a break. Now she’d do what she always did when she finished a book, or reached a good stopping point in one. Clean house. Check her backlog of emails. Pick up some more groceries. And take a run on the wolf side. She finished vacuuming and dusting, swearing every window must let all the outdoors in, and then started a batch of gingerbread cookie cutouts to celebrate finishing another book and the Christmas holiday season. While they were baking, she finally settled down to check her emails. Fan mail always came first, and one from her website got her attention right off. She opened it up and read: Hello, I’m Owen Nottingham, private investigator for White River Investigations, White River Falls, Minnesota and my client, Strom Hart, hired me to locate you. Your parents, John and Cynthia Hart, left you an inheritance and you need to see the lawyer about it so that you can claim it. I need to verify that you are the right woman first. Is there any way that we can possibly meet and get this taken care of so you can collect your inheritance? Strom Hart will be the one to receive it by the end of the month otherwise. His assistant, Jim Winchester, said Mr. Hart is your uncle.”She reread the message again, not believing her eyes, tears filling them. She quickly looked at the date of the message. Two days ago! She knew she shouldn’t have neglected her emails, but when she was into the story, she couldn’t break away. She ground her teeth, raised her fingers to respond, and heard a knocking at her door. No one came here. Never. Ever. Not even salesmen. She glanced at her phases-of-the moon calendar. The waxing gibbous was just beginning. She should be fine. Just to be on the safe side, in case the person at the door was trouble, she pulled a can of mace from her desk drawer and headed for the door. She peered through the peephole. A handsome black-haired man waited at the door, with rugged features and intense blue eyes. He was dressed in a black suit, a red shirt, and a dark purple tie covered in red, purple, and gold Christmas balls. She raised her brows.“I’m Owen Nottingham,” he said to the door, holding up his PI license and driver’s license. He couldn’t know that she was watching him, so he must have hoped she was there, observing him. “I tried getting hold of you on your contact form on your website about your inheritance. Your contact form might not be working, so I had to locate you in person.”So this was the man who had sent the message. But was he for real? He had to be. He wouldn’t have come all this way to see her if he wasn’t. But how had he found her? She opened the door, the bells jingling on her Christmas wreath, and he glanced down at the can of mace in her hand. He smiled, his gaze holding hers with such intensity, it was as though he could see clear through to her soul. “Really, just a PI doing my job.”A chilly breeze carried his scent to her. Wolf scent. She felt so lightheaded all at once, she grabbed the door to keep herself upright, and dropped the can of mace on the tile floor. It clattered, but she couldn’t reach for it if her life depended on it. Oh. My. God.This couldn’t be real. He couldn’t be real. No wonder he was talking to the door. He must have heard her footfalls as she’d approached. He took a deep breath at the same time and his eyes widened in surprise when he smelled her scent. His hand shot out to grab her arm and steady her. For a minute, as she tried to control her breathing, her heart rate, neither of which she could steady. She felt like she was going to pass out.“Hell, you’re the wolf I saw across the White River, aren’t you?”***   Owen could sweep me off my feet any day! Hope you enjoy Dreaming of the White Wolf, available now!

A field of blanket flowers. Individual plants in the garden. And the seeds ready to make a field of blanket flowers.

I missed doing my regular blog yesterday. Between internet trouble in the morning and then taking care of grandbaby, I never had time. I did spend a few hours trying to complete a 40 question interview though, which I did finish.

Hey, if you ask me which I like better, one thing or another, I have to give more of an explanation. I’m a writer.

Okay, off to work on Billionaire Wolf Christmas. Hope you all have a lovely day !

Who wants to live here? Dunrobin Castle is a fairly well-known castle in Scotland. A fort was recorded here in 1401, and the castle is still in the same family (a family with a not-so-positive history, I'm sorry to say).
If the picture of the castle isn't enticing enough, check out these gardens. They form the back yard and slope down to the sea. It's utterly idyllic.
Here are a couple closeups of the garden.

The estate has only 3 gardeners to take care of all these gardens.

We also attended a demonstration on the castle grounds about birds of prey. I only did it because I thought my husband would enjoy it, but it turned out to be fascinating. This is a falcon, which can fly up to 200 miles per hour. You really can't see it coming. They can only pluck their prey out of the air (not from the ground) so the keeper did a demonstration. My husband and another man both got hit by the bird. They said it hurt! The trainer did a wonderful show and his love for his birds was obvious. He is sent injured birds to help them recuperate.

Last, but not least, I can show you the entryway to the castle. This is the only place where they allow pictures to be taken of the inside of the castle. :(
However, we really enjoyed our time living for a moment like the nobility!

More pictures from our trip to Scotland are here.
