When …moreSo far, I have never encountered writer's block. I hope I don't jinx myself. I think all writers fear having to deal with an inability to write. When I find myself struggling to write, I do battle for a short time, and if I have no ideas, I stop. I take a break. I take a shower, no seriously, I do. Then I try again. If I am still having trouble and only happened a few times, I take a nap. Relaxing, not pushing always seems to allow my creative mind to take over. I have spent most of my life writing stories. At this point, I can resist the fear and concentrate on allowing my mind to think about other things. Inevitably an idea comes.(less)

I have an MBA, so I can use my business skills to meet deadlines, get through my to-do list, and have the discipline to sit down every day and work productively for 12 hours.

I have studied fiction writing seriously for 20 years. I am writing, taking classes, submitting stories, attending workshops, and reading other writer's work. I started writing so young that I can't say what got me started, but what has kept me going is telling stories that I believe are important. I try to put readers into a world they don't know, create characters that speak to them and whose struggles change the protagonist, and hopefully leave the reader with a new perspective.

I write non-fiction to pay forward to younger writers coming up after me. Several great writers have been my mentor. I have learned so much from them, and what success I've had has come from them taking the time to help me. I knew there were many talented creative writers publishing books about how to be a better writer, but there were not many people writing books on how to succeed at the business side of writing. That I decided was how I could contribute to the education of those starting on their writing journey.

Some of those people are young. Some are retired. It doesn't matter their age, as long as they have stories to tell. I work to teach them the skills they need to grow their income so they can keep telling and selling their stories.(less)
