The Big Idea: Faerie Apocalypse

The incredibly generous John Scalzi was kind enough to host a Big Idea essay about faerie Apocalypse on his blog, Whatever.[image error]

For those who came in late, this is a a feature in which John lets authors talk about the inception and execution of their newest project. It’s been a career goal of mine to get a Big Idea slot and I feel like this is a genuine career milestone for me..

Here’s what I wrote:

Huge thanks to John for this opportunity!

Five Questions about Faerie Apocalypse

The Best Person in the World, Narrelle Harris, asked me five questions about Faerie Apocalypse and here is what I said. unto her.

Includes a partial soundtrack for the book. (Ask me twice and I might post all the songs referenced in there.)

In the meantime, go! Read! Then buy some of Narrelle’s awesome work. I particularly recommend The Opposite of Life and its sequel, Walking Shadows for some hilarious and touching Melbourne vampire action.

Over the centuries the Faerie Realms have drifted away from the mortal world. But for some, the

Doors will open. For some, there is a Way to travel there, if they want it badly enough. If they dream

it hard enough. In this era, only lovers, poets, and madmen can access the Realms of the Land–and

for good reason.

A succession of mortals travel to Faerie: a veteran seeking beauty; a magus seeking power; an

urchin seeking his wayward father; an engineer seeking meaning. The mortals bring the

horrors of our age to the Land, and the Folk who live there respond in kind.

“In this beautifully imagined novel, Franks tells a story viscerally graphic, emotionally moving

and very, very sharp.” – Kaaron Warren

“Franks has delivered a dark fantastical history of staggering imagination, written like a fable,

delivered like a punch. Powerful and engrossing stuff.” – Alan Baxter

FAERIE APOCALYPSE cover reveal

Here it is, folks. The cover for my second novel, FAERIE APOCALYPSE, available January 15th 2018 from IFWG Australia.

Over the centuries the Faerie Realms have drifted away from the mortal world. But for some, the Doors will open. For some, there is a Way to travel there, if they want it badly enough. If they dream it hard enough. In this era, only lovers, poets, and madmen can access the Realms of the Land–and for good reason.

A succession of mortals travel to Faerie: a veteran seeking beauty; a magus seeking power; an urchin seeking his wayward father; an engineer seeking meaning. The mortals bring the horrors of our age to the Land, and the Folk who live there respond in kind.

The artwork here was painted by Christian Chatman and designed by Catherine Archer-Wills. This is only half of it–Christian painted two panels, one for the front cover and one for the back. I am incredibly pleased with how this turned out. I wanted something in traditional media that would evoke the weird and wild fantasy novels of the 1970s. I particularly love the Orb/Sphere covers to Roger Zelazny’s AMBER novels and this immediately reminds me of those.

Just a couple of months til the book is available.

The end is nigh.

Bookstore Assault

Well, this is a rarity. I have work in three separate publications across three different genres coming to Australian bookstores between now and Christmas.

[image error]First up, my short story “The Problem of the Biggest Man in Australia” in Sherlock Holmes: The Australian Casebook, in which Holmes and Watson travel to Hobart to investigate the death of Thomas Dewhurst Jennings, the biggest man in Australia. I believe this is in stores fist week of November, which is… next week. It’s a magnificent hardcover edition containing stories by many of Australia’s best crime writers. Each piece has a gorgeous illustration–mine is by famous Sherlockian illustrator Phil Cornell. You should buy this book.

Next up, my long short story “Exli and the Dragon” is in And Then… vol.01, in which Exli and the the human criminal known only as The Dragon attempt to escape from an asteroid prison.

This one will be in stores in December 2017 from Clan Destine Press. Distributed by Dennis Jones and Associates. You should buy this book.

Thirdly, my short story “Darkness Beyond”, in Cthulhu: Deep Down Under vol.01, in which a bush ranger incarcerated at Port Arthur prison finds there’s something dark beneath the waters of Carnarvon Bay.

Available in December from IFWG Australia. Distributed by Dennis Jones and Associates. You should buy this book.

You should buy all of these books.

Stay tuned for news about my new novel, FAERIE APOCALYPSE!
