Book Review: Pet Avengers Classic

Pet Avengers Classic Pet Avengers Classic by Stan Lee

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book is a hodgepodge of stories including a few full-length issues and a lot of back up stories that haven't been reprinted elsewhere as far as I know, all focusing on pets of Marvel Universe heroes. There's even a Jack Kirby drawn story from a pre-Silver Age Journey into Mystery. There's even an issue of Speedball and I've never heard of this character.

Unfortunately, rare doesn't add up to good and it's fair to say the quality is pretty uneven. My favorites are the Squirrel Girl orign story from Marvel Superheroes #8 from#2 from 1992, The Franling Richards Special from 2007, the New Warriors #2 from 2005 and the aforementioned Journey Into Mystery. The rest are kind of okay. However, due to rarity, this might be a nice one for a collection if you could get it at a good price.

Book Review: Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers

Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers (Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers (2009)) Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers (Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers by Chris Eliopoulos

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers has Lockjaw organizing a group of animals (sidekicks and supporting characters) to obtain the Infinity Gems and thwart Thanos.

This story isn't bad and has some cute moments, but doesn't really work for me. Part of it is just the scale of the mission...fighting the Infinity Gems and battlings Thanos. Given how hard both tasks are, it's ridiculously easy in this book. A better example of a story with animals could be found in a recent Super Sons Annual by Peter Tomasi where the goal was much more reasonable.

In addition, even if you did go with such an outsized goal, that could still work in the sense of Squirrel Girl battling Galactus, but that worked because they leaned in to the ridiculousness of the situation. Here, for some reason, Thanos is playing against the Pet Avengers on the easy setting for no good reason.

Overall, this is kind of a meh read, some fun moments, but ultimately doesn't seem to know what its doing.
