Three hurting hearts. Too many secrets. One chance to conquer their fears.

Over the past year, Travis Coleman lost the two people he allowed closest to his heart. Both gave him ultimatums—then left. Hell if he needs that kind of pain again. Time to move forward without the friends he thought might save him from his dangerous cravings.

When Ashley Sims returns to Rocky Mountain House, her rambling lifestyle isn’t all she’s hoping to change. Travis snagged a piece of her, and while getting tangled in his issues again might be crazy, she hasn’t given up on him.

Nine months ago, Cassidy Jones walked away to stop his best friend from making a huge mistake. Temptation lingers, though, and when Travis shows up on his turf accompanied by a sensually uninhibited woman, the combination tosses fuel on the banked fire.

Passion flares among the three of them, as hot as the summer days. But are they willing to push the limits, and fight for love?

Warning: Dirty fighting, dirty talk, dirtier sex—secrets are coming out. Get ready for ménage a trois and cowboy-on-cowboy action, with ropes and crops and the kind of relentless love strong enough to set a man free.

Flashback Friday – Rocky Mountain Desire

Send to Kindle

Today we are flashing back to Rocky Mountain Desire, the third book in the Six Pack Ranch series.

Cover, bearded man cuddling woman

Title: Rocky Mountain Desire

Heroine: Hope Meridan – Business owner and little sister of Matt’s ex-girlfriend Helen. Has always crushed on Matt, and wants to try to rekindle their friendship.

Hero: Matt Coleman – His last relationship left him heartbroken. Forming a friendship and bond with Hope, his ex’s little sister, is a line he shouldn’t be thinking about crossing.

Tidbit: Poor Matt. He had such a tough go of it for so long, it was a relief to finally get to write his book. It was a long time for me to wait, because I wrote the first two stories in the series for one publisher, then after a year, took them off the market, revised books 1 & 2 and THEN got to write Matt and Hope’s HEA.

I wrote their story while traveling across the USA during a year of traveling in a camper, and let me tell you how difficult it is to write a sexy scene while two feet away the family is watching a movie.

O_o. It was a learning experience all around.

Here is one of my favorite quotes:

Quote: I like the way you smile at me. Like you're constantly surprised that I'm there beside you and that me being there is a good thing.

His goal is to stand firm

As the middle child in a big family, Len Thompson has found it easy to slip under the radar. His relationships outside the family-run garage tend to run a mile wide but only an inch deep as he keeps his heart, body and soul protected. But when the one woman he’s always wanted makes it known she’ll soon be leaving town, he can’t resist letting her into his carefully constructed fortress.

Her gift is rocking his world

Chasing her best friend’s big brother has both entertained and frustrated Janey for years. She’s not sure what triggered his change of heart, but hell, yeah, she’ll accept it. All of it. Every kiss, every touch, every bit of body-shaking pleasure. Working to meet her renovation deadline is suddenly not nearly as interesting as the mind-blowing escapades she’s enjoying with the big sexy mechanic.

When old fears threaten, Len must finally choose—face his past or let their future crumble.

~~**~~

He’d expected a bit of an attitude, but the sheer flaming belligerence flashing in her eyes was a surprise.

Janey stomped across the concrete floor of the garage, jerking to a halt only inches away from him as she stuck a finger in his face. “You’ve got a shit-ton of explaining to do.”

“How’re you feeling this morning?” Len folded his arms across his chest, attempting to create a barrier between him and the glaring young woman.

“How the hell am I supposed to feel the night after all sorts of things happened I can’t remember? I mean, thank you for taking care of me after that jackass slipped me the drugs—I’m grateful, I really am. Katy told me you looked after me, but there’s a whole lot she didn’t know about. Am I right?”

She wasn’t beating around the bush. “You were a bit of a handful.”

“A handful?” Her volume increased, and she planted both fists on her hips. She was much smaller than him, but right then she seemed a towering bundle of fury. “What exactly did I do that made this seem like a good idea?”

She whipped off her T-shirt, and Len’s heart leapt into his throat. “Jeez, Janey, put your clothes on.”

She tucked the hand holding the shirt behind her back, pointing her free fingers like a gun at the printed words on her abdomen.

At least this time she was wearing a bra, which was a whole lot more than she’d had on the last time he had gotten up close and personal with the bold black marks decorating her skin.

“Len Thompson, you tell me right now why your signature is on my belly. Along with what looks like my handwriting saying Len + Janey 4ever.”

A distant rumble of voices grew louder, and Len glanced over his shoulder to see the staff room door opening. It was bad enough to have to deal with this, but he couldn’t allow anyone to see Janey half-naked in the middle of the family garage.

He turned back and braced himself. “I’ll explain everything, but not here.”

She shook her head. “I’m not going anywhere without some answers.”

Len gave up trying to convince her. Simply leaned over and planted his shoulder against her stomach, grabbed hold of her legs and picked her up. She squawked in dismay, but he ignored her complaining, heading for the exit at a rapid clip. He had them outside and tucked in next to the propane shed in no time, out of sight from anyone who might wander into the garage yard.

“Put me down this instant, you big lughead.” Janey punctuated her complaints by smacking her fists into his back.

“We’re not discussing anything in front of my family.” Len lowered her to the ground, careful she had her balance before letting go. He snatched her T-shirt from her hand and thrust it forward. “Put your clothes on.”

Janey folded her arms over her chest, her chin rising defiantly. “Why is your signature on my body?”

“Because it was the only way to get you to stop…” Len paused, not because he wasn’t going to tell her the truth, but because there had to be a better way to say this than simply blurting it out.

In front of him, her defiance lessened and her bluster faded. “Damn, what the hell did I try to do to you?”

He couldn’t stop the smile that twitched his lips. “Not much more than anything you’ve tried before.”

“Shit.” Janey sighed, jerking her shirt over her head. “So. You got to take care of me while I was high, and I basically offered myself to you. Again.”

“It wasn’t all about sex,” Len reassured her. “You ran the gambit. You asked for a hug at one point, and when I gave you one, you started crying.”

She frowned, leaning back on the corrugated metal of the shed wall. “Crying?”

“You said I would never hug you unless you were dying. Then we had a long conversation about how you were not dying, and then you got really fascinated with your hands. Which somehow led into a conversation about how your mom would kill you if you ever handed in notes where your handwriting was that crooked.”

“Great.” She rolled her eyes. “Anything else I should know about?”

Nope. Not telling her, not even if she insisted. Some things he couldn’t say out loud without fucking dying all over. “Not really.”

She tugged at the bottom of her shirt, exposing a little of the sharpie markings on her belly. One brow shot up again, but she didn’t say anything. Just waited, expectantly.

Fine. It seemed this was going to happen, and Len couldn’t even feel remorseful about it. “After you’d had a shower—because you insisted you were being consumed by a million, trillion ants, you got a little…affectionate.”

Janey’s head banged on the shed wall. She closed her eyes and cursed softly. “Fab. What did I do? Try to give you a hickey?”

She honestly looked so upset by the whole situation Len didn’t have the heart to tell her all the details. Like how he’d had to go in the shower with her because he was afraid she wouldn’t stay vertical. And no way would he show her the scratch marks she’d left on his back. “Don’t worry. I wasn’t offended.”

“But for some reason I decided to do a semipermanent tattoo, and get you to autograph it.”

“You were rather insistent.”

She shook her head, regaining her feet as she moved away from the wall. “Well, thanks again for taking care of me. And sorry I was a pain in the ass.”

She tried to walk around him, but Len shot out his hand and caught her by the elbow. “I’ll come by your place around six.”

Janey’s brows shot skyward. “Hello?”

“For our first date. We can hit the diner for supper.” Maybe last night he’d had his arm twisted, but now that he’d wrapped his head around the situation, being together with her was all he could think about.

Being with her was all he’d ever wanted, really.

“Oh, for fuck’s sake.” Janey shook her arm as if her feeble wiggle could make him let go. “I was out of it, and you pacified me. I get it. Don’t jerk my chain.”

“I’m not joking.” Len shifted forward, backing her toward the shed with his body. “Yes, you were high. But you said a couple things while you were flying that made a lot of sense.”

He had her trapped in position. His forearms rested on the shed, leaning in close enough she had to tilt her head to look at him.

“You’re serious? You want to take me on a date?”

Len stroked the back of his forefinger up her arm. Teasing gently over the edge of her T-shirt until he could draw his fingers along her collarbone. She was so damn soft. “That’s what the writing on your belly says. That you and I are going out. I signed it, and trust me, no matter how wild you were talking, if I hadn’t wanted to, I wouldn’t have agreed.”

Janey shivered under his touch. He rested his hand on her shoulder and was slowly brushing his thumb back and forth along the edge of her neckline. “This is insane, Len. I’ve tried to get you to go out with me for years. I have done the stupidest things—”

“You don’t have to bring them up.”

She had the cutest little frown creasing her forehead. “But now, after all that time, you and I are dating?”

“Yes.”

She snorted. “Bullshit.”

“Why? Don’t you want to go out with me anymore?” He’d be the one calling bullshit if she said no.

She opened and closed her mouth a few times, seriously struggling to respond. Janey finally shrugged and pulled a face. “It doesn’t seem like this is real. Maybe I’m still high.” Her gaze narrowed. “Are you sure you’re not pulling a fast one on me?”

“Nope.” He kept touching her, unable to stop. It was as if now that he’d given himself permission, holding back any longer was impossible.

Her eyes grew wider as he slipped his hand behind her head and cradled her carefully. Temptation lured him forward, calling him to lean down and take her lips for the first time, right there and then.

His body was primed for anything, and everything. Far too hard from simply standing this close—he was going to have a hell of a time surviving when he actually touched her.

Her lashes fluttered, and she stopped fighting. Instead, she planted her palms against his chest, the warmth shooting a thrill through his system. “For real? Because I swear, if I find out you’re shitting me, I will peel you like a grape.”

Len laughed, the sound coming out shaky as Janey dragged her nails down his chest. “I would like to see you try, but no. I’m serious.” He covered her hands with his, mesmerized again by their softness. “This is real, you and me.”

Her tongue darted out over her bottom lip, and another shot of fire raced up his spine. Yet somehow, Len pulled away. Setting her free and placing some distance between them in spite of the disappointment on her face.

He knew the sensation. “I’ll see you at six.”

And he turned, and walked away.

Flashback Friday – Rocky Mountain Haven

Send to Kindle

Today we are flashing back to the second book in the Six Pack Ranch series, Rocky Mountain Haven.

Cover image - couple hugging.

Title: Rocky Mountain Haven

Heroine: Beth Danube – widow and survivor of an abusive husband. Looking to start over with her boys in a small town where they can thrive and grow in a healthy environment.

Hero: Daniel Coleman – middle child of the Six Pack Coleman clan. Ready to have a family and settle down into the life he’s always wanted.

Tidbit: This is one of the books that I saw a particular scene in my mind, and I wrote the rest of the book to get to that scene. But probably the most interesting thing about Rocky Mountain Haven is how much feedback from readers has meant to me.

The heroine, Beth, is a very strong woman coming out of an abusive relationship. To receive emails from other women who said they could relate to her, and that they themselves were making a better life for themselves and their children — it makes my heart full.

Flashback Friday – Silver Mine

Send to Kindle

Today we are looking back at the second book in the Takhini Wolves series, SILVER MINE.

Silver Mine Cover, couple with cougar

Title: Silver Mine

Heroine: Shelley Bradley – a veterinarian and wolf who lives in the pack as an outcast. Scared of the prospect of falling for Chase.

Hero: Chase Johnson – a crossbreed who lives in the wilderness and acts as the unofficial alpha to the shifters living in the Yukon. Has been infected with an unknown shifter virus, and the clock is ticking.

Tidbit: Part of the fun of writing the Takhini books are getting to slip in moments of real northern history. Not like a lecture, but location really makes a difference in these books. The hero of Silver Mine is Métis First Nations, there’s mention of the Gold Rush, and the location is off the beaten trail, even for books set in the north.

Flashback Friday – Stormy Seduction

Send to Kindle

Today we are flashing back to Story Seduction, the second book in the Pacific Passion series.

Stormy Seduction book cover, couple embracing with male pulling female's shirt up.

 Title: Stormy Seduction

Heroine: Laurin – Air shifter committed to her romance with Matt, despite his sea shifter Shaman status. Destined to be part of an ancient mystical prophecy.

Hero: Matt – Sea shifter shaman, can shift into any sea creature. Willing to fight off other air shifters for the chance to keep Laurin at his side.

Notable tidbit about story: Some books are fun to write because of what you learn while writing them. Some are just straight out fun. This one? Has one of the hottest, dirtiest scenes I’ve ever written, but that wasn’t the intention going in. It just flowed so naturally from the events in the story, and suddenly, O_o there was this SCENE happening…

Read with your oven mitts on, that’s all I’m saying…

Here is one of my favorite quotes:

Let's try not to set any fires, but if you want to be on top, I'm all for it. Set the pace, my ray of moonshine. - Stormy Seduction

He’s got a touch that’s hotter than hot

It took a hell of a lot of fast-talking and more than a few speeding tickets before Mitch Thompson convinced Constable Anna Coleman to take him for a ride. Only now that she’s loosened off her stiff RCMP uniform, it’s not nearly enough. Their secret sexual escapades are mind-blowing, but Mitch wants more than her body—he wants her heart.

Her world could go up in flames

It’s a dangerous road to walk, and Anna doesn’t know how far she can safely tread. Bad boy Mitch may have lured her wild side out to play, but giving in to their increasingly passionate desires could endanger her very civilized career. Somewhere between yearning and obsession there has to be a balance point.

Or they’re both going to get burned.

~~**~~

This story was previously published in the MARKED anthology, so if you bought that, you have read it. I LOVED being in the anthology, but it’s also nice to have Rocky Ride on it’s own– the print book is SO CUTE it makes my teeth hurt. ;)

And then, you can read Baby, Be Mine if you haven’t yet (which is a bonus book in the series), and I’m getting the official book 2, ONE SEXY RIDE ready for June 22 release!

Lots of awesome Thompson goodness for you! I hope you enjoy!!

Adventures in Dragon

Send to Kindle

The really funny part is every time I mention dragons, all my readers perk up their ears and start demanding release dates. (Hopefully November, and that’s all I’m going to say about that. Now, hush, this is a post for my writer friends!) ;)

image

I’ve now completed my fifth book/story using Dragon Dictate as my dominant way to get words on the page. There’s been a learning curve, and some of the mistakes I’ve made are classics, but in the end it’s been pretty amazing.

There are always lots of questions  every time I talk about my Dragon. My friend Maisey Yates also started using the tool, and she’s written up her own post about the experience. You can find hers here if you’re gathering information.

Like anything, though, writing is an individual experience. We all have things that we like, or that will work for us, along with the things that would drive us nuts. Every time there is a new tool mentioned in the writing world there is a lot of interest generated. For example, I know some people swear by Scrivener. The thought of that program makes my skin crawl. But when I think about it more thoroughly my reaction is because I already have my own organizational method, just not that one.

Could I learn to use it? Yes, if I had to.

Do I have to?

That’s the approach I want to take in my post about Dragon. It’s a neat tool, and it’s really helped me a lot, but is it a tool that will work for you? Will it fit your needs?

For me, my wrists and elbows simply couldn’t take the pace anymore. Over the past six years I’d clocked nearly 2 million words in writing my books, and that doesn’t count rewrites, edits, blog posts, IM and chitchat with writer friends, and all fifty-three thousand tweets (oh, Lordy, I really didn’t need to add that up!!)

The first time I tried Dragon Dictate, though, I gave up in frustration. As a dedicated pantser/don’t read the instruction book, I didn’t find it as intuitive as I hoped. I’m not quite sure how I write — I usually have some kind of target in my writing, and then this almost “magical” event occurs when I work. The story flows from my fingertips onto the screen, and that’s when I  find out what’s actually happening. Attempting to duplicate that with Dragon left me stuttering. The magic wasn’t there, and I had a deadline, so I shoved it aside and ignored it.

For whatever reason, three months later I grabbed it again. With yet another looming deadline it maybe wasn’t the best time to make another attempt, but this time something clicked.

Dictating really is a different skill set. I know how to tell a story. I don’t know how to touch-type, but I definitely have gotten better over the past five years. This time when I started to use Dragon a few things clicked.

1) Am I ever COMMA ever going to make this work QUESTION MARK

Part the first:

The idea of speaking in phrases instead of individual words finally made sense. I think the first time I was using Dragon I watched the words appear on the page, and I was trying to put them down like I would type. One. Word. After. Another. No. Matter. How. Fast. Or. Slow.

Very frustrating.

Dragon works best when you speak in phrases. Context clues helps it know which word you mean to use (which there or their). Now, when I type, it’s as if I’m speaking to another person. Even if I don’t know everything I want to say, the words come out in groups, and Dragon plops them down in the same way.

When I dictated the first line of this section, this is how I said it:

number one

comma

the idea

of speaking in phrases

instead of individual words

finally made sense

period

If reading that made you jittery, I understand. I had the same reaction the first time I tried Dragon. Keep reading…

Part the second:

Just like learning to play a wind instrument, the timing of breathing is a learned skill. In Dragon Dictate you verbally add punctuation, and at first it’s like learning to take a breath between musical phrases. The music stutters, and you feel slightly awkward. But the more you do it, the more instinctive it becomes, and punctuation slips into those moments when you need to breathe anyway.

Practice. Practice. Practice.

2) The story is a mess…

Once I was less worried about punctuation, the second thing I realized was while I write fairly clean, I still spend time editing every line. When I sprint I can type up to 2000 words in an hour. I can’t sustain that level for long, but when I’m in the groove, and I kind of know what I’m going to write about, that’s my top speed.

And then, when I’m done, I go back through the entire 2000 words and clean it up. AutoCorrect does some of the work — I’ve trained my Word program to fix lots of my common typos — but the truth is at the end of an hour I still have at least fifteen minutes worth of work, if not more to get my manuscript tidied up.

Using Dragon increases my speed in some ways, decreases it in others, but in the end I still have to go back and tidy things up. It’s coming to the point of realizing that while I know how to talk, I didn’t know how to dictate. It’s a new skill that takes training.

Now I am at the point that even though it feels as if I’m going slowly, the actual words go on the page quicker. At the end of an hour’s work I have dictated an average of 3000 words on a regular basis.

And then I go back and edit. Just like I would’ve had to after sprinting.

3) Finding the magic

When my daughter was learning to drive standard there was so much to think about. I’ve driven it for so long, but watching her practice brought back memories. You not only have to balance the clutch with the gas, watch out your rearview mirror, aim the thing in the right direction —

I knew what to expect when typing my story. Sometimes it would go fast, sometimes would go slow, but there would always be those times when I would finish and looked down at what I’d accomplished for the day, and be thrilled with the progress. Excited about the story taking shape almost magically.

When I started using Dragon I couldn’t see the magic because I was concentrating on all the other details. Adding punctuation, worrying about enunciating properly, convincing the program I really didn’t want it to start reading back what I had written. But the longer I’ve used Dragon, the less I see those things. The less they distract me because I do them automatically. And now I begin to see the magic once again as it happens.

I’ve just completed a collaborative project with Elle Kennedy. As I was working on one section, I suddenly found the story headed down the perfect path for that moment. The themes and phrases fell into place like dominoes tumbling into each other, and that was the first time I watched as I spoke the words onto the page and thought “oohhhh, this is good!”

It’s not that I haven’t “made magic” in the previous four books I used Dragon with, but this was the first time I was aware. I’ve reached the point of proficiency that I can not only get the words on the page, but I can enjoy the ride as well.

4) To infinity and beyond….

And now we get to some of the fun adaptations I’ve been playing with.

I have discovered I can strap my laptop to the top of my treadmill, plug-in my ear/mic, and walk while I dictate. Do I still need to clean up the manuscript when I’m done? Definitely. But I never would have been able to type while on the treadmill, so I’m really stoked about this.

I haven’t found a Bluetooth headset yet that will give me total mobility, but the new thing I’m trying is a transcription device. I successfully used the phone-sized recorder the other day, recording four different fifteen-minute dictation sessions while I was out of the house. When I did get back to my office and plug in the device, it was fascinating to watch the audio transfer onto the word doc. My goal is to plug in my headset to the recorder and go for long walks. I live in the country so I can get away with being the crazy lady who talks to herself all the time.

I’m learning to use Dragon more effectively while doing blog posts and answering my mail. I don’t use it to do edits, although I know you could. I find I still go much quicker by hand. I can use Dragon on twitter, but I’m less likely to use it on IM because the typos I get are hysterical.

Idiosyncrasies:

Dragon Dictate doesn’t like the way I say “oh”, which means every time I say it, at least half the time I end up with a random word being bolded. (i.e. it thinks I’m giving the order to put the word in bold.)  There’s a way to turn this off, but I can also just tell the program ‘undo’. Plus, it’s now making me more aware of how often I use that word. It’s one I often cut in edits, so learning not to say it in the first place isn’t a bad thing.

Dragon doesn’t like the way I pronounce some of my hero/heroine names. There is a way to teach Dragon what I mean, but when I’m in a hurry I use the same solution I would use when I’m typing and I can’t remember how to spell a word. I slip in a substitute name, or XXX, and later use find/replace when I’m editing.

 ~~**~~

That’s enough for now!

Overall, it’s been quite the adventure, and I, and my wrists, are very glad it worked in the end. Physically this was something  I needed to figure out. From the standpoint of using the treadmill, and getting to go for walks, I’m even more thrilled.

If you are considering trying the dictation program, I will mention that the built-in program on the Mac was nothing like using Dragon. Remember how frustrated I got with Dragon the first time I tried it, and how much I like it now? My attempt to use the built-in dictation was five hundred times more frustrating than the first attempt with Dragon. Also, there’s a Dragon Dictate out for the iPad — again, not something that worked for me. So those are the things you’re trying I think you’ll be fighting an uphill battle to enjoy the product.

Will Dragon triple your productivity? I’m not sure. It’s helped me reach my goals, and there are certain bonus side effects such as I can’t eat or drink while using it ;-) but it’s not magically writing the books for me.

I’m working on that one though. I’ll let you know if I figure out the magic key that unlocks that section of the tool.

Flashback Friday – Falling, Freestyle

Send to Kindle

Today we are flashing back to the first book in the Xtreme Adventures series, FALLING, FREESTYLE.

Falling Freestyle 222

Title: Falling, Freestyle

Heroine: Dara – Best friends with two sexy men she wants, but can’t chose between. Puts a plan in place to seduce them both.

Heroes: Kane – The laid-back and easy going friend who is ready to get Dara into his bed, for more than just a weekend.

Jack – The serious friend who is all for a little extra kink, but hesitant to look past their sexy weekend.

Tidbit: So this is more of ‘author had a burning question and had to run with it’ moment. Before I wrote Falling, Freestyle, I’d read a bunch of menages and one thing had always bothered me. Never once did the guys EVER think about the fact they were there, with a woman, AND another guy. I mean–if they aren’t into other guys, I can see it as not being a part of the story sexually, but emotionally? Wouldn’t SOMEONE say something, at some time?

So while the story is about Dana and her two best buds in the world having some fun and figuring out if they can actually have a long term relationship with 3 in the bed, one of the parts I love best is a frank discussion between Jack and Kane regarding the fact their ham and eggs (so to speak) will both be out at the same time.

Ahem. :D

Here is one of my favorite quotes:
