A Limerick by Ralph

I have met some wonderful and creative people on the Internet. Recently I’ve communicated with a whole bunch of other fabulous people that I’ve met since I started blogging regularly again. I don’t even know what some of them look like — you know, that avatar thing. I have spoken with a few by phone.(...)

One Woman’s One-Woman Protest

One woman’s one-woman protest. I think that’s how one would describe it. About two weeks ago I was walking down Broadway near Lincoln Center here in New York City and I approached a woman who was dressed all in white. She was wearing a white robe-like garment with signs and placards and little posters all(...)

Be Your Own Cheerleader

Be Your Own Cheerleader

Be Your Own Cheerleader

Many times people say that they can’t achieve what they want to achieve — they can’t be what they want to be, do what they want to do, or have what they want to have because of the start they had in life. They may say they came from poverty or their parents were uneducated, or there was nobody there to encourage them on — nobody there to cheer for them.

I would like to remind you that you could be your own cheerleader.  In fact, I believe, being one’s on cheerleader is mandatory for a fulfilled life.

It doesn’t matter what your story is. It doesn’t matter where you came from. Almost every day we can hear stories of people who came from what we would describe as rags and went to riches. By riches I don’t necessarily mean incredible amounts of money. I mean an incredible sense of self-worth and the ability to feel happy and peaceful.

Become your own cheerleader. Learn to talk to yourself in a way that builds you up. Be on your own side. Stop waiting for others to compliment you or tell you what you can or cannot do. Advice or wisdom from others can be a good thing.  However, don’t let what others say or don’t say to or about you destroy your dreams.

Be you own cheerleader!

Maybe It’s Going To Be Beautiful Today

woman leaning on old beat up truck Maybe It’s Going To Be Beautiful Today

Maybe It’s Going to Be Beautiful Today

I woke up this morning to the sound of a helicopter hovering in the sky. I went outside to see what was going on. But there was nothing happening out of the ordinary. There was just this very loud helicopter hovering overhead.

I looked up at the sky and everything looked so foggy and gray this morning. As I went back inside, I was thinking about the things that are happening politically, not only in our country, but also all over the world.

I sat down on my bed and I wrote, ‘maybe it’s going to be beautiful today’. What I was writing turned into this poem:

Maybe it’s going to be beautiful today

I think it is

I think it is

Maybe the people can be healed today

I think they will

I think they will

Maybe we can love each other today

I think we can

I think we can

Maybe we will be free today

I think we shall

I think we shall

Maybe all of the children will laugh and play today

I think it’s time

I think it’s time

Maybe it’s going to be beautiful today

~ WB

‘New York Uke Festival 2013′ – Part 2

HALAU HULA O NA MELE ‘AINA O HAWAI’I at NY Uke Festival

Video here:

This post is for me to put closure on the New York Ukulele Festival. It’s hard to believe that it’s Friday already. This time last week I was in the middle of the wonderful ukulele concert at the Ethical Culture Concert Hall here in New York at 64th and Central Park West.

I couldn’t capture everything in video — or pictures — or even words that I would like to express about last weekend’s experience. It was wonderful! I’m not a person from the ‘ukulele world’, however, from what I gather; this festival included some of the best of the best and some of the greatest of the greats from the ‘ukulele world’.

‘New York Uke Festival 2013′ – Part 1

I never thought of myself as someone who would hang out at a ukulele festival. I love music and know the importance of keeping all musical cultures and art forms alive. I just never imagined myself hanging out at a ukulele festival. One never knows where our life journeys will take us. This past weekend I was hanging out at the New York Ukulele Festival 2013. I enjoyed every minute of it! I have a new respect for the ukulele and the people who play them.

What’s In A Name?

See Video Below:

People often ask me about my name, Wambui Bahati. I am asked what the origin is. I am asked, “What does your name mean?” I am asked, “How do you pronounce it?” I get emails from people who ask if I’m from Kenya.

I was not born in Africa. I was born in the state of North Carolina in the United States. Wambui Bahati is not the name that my mother originally named me. However, today, Wambui Bahati is my legal name.

In this video, I am happy to share the story of my name with you.

A Poem by My Father — For, My Father

John L. Washington, my father

John L. Washington, my father, served in the United States Army . . .

WHEN THE BELLS OF FREEDOM RING

Oh! How glad we will be

When the world is all free

And our boys return home

Never again to roam.

When the bells of freedom ring

Our boys will come marching home

Never again to roam;

When the bells of freedom ring

Empty arms will then fill

And lonely hearts will thrill;

Joyful songs we will sing —

When the bells of freedom ring!

~ by  John L. Washington
