Happy Birthday Hannah
we will love you forever
Hannah Lee Gurl Dawg!
Perusing Petfinder.com one evening. I saw this picture and I was a goner. I could not type up my application fast enough. Seems Hannah was a Parvo survivor saved by Basset Rescue of Florida. Only 12 weeks old, it was a miracle she survived. My husband was deployed overseas and was due home any time. Thought she might be a nice coming home present.
I did not think we would get her – lots of homes for adorable puppies. But this one was special and needed special care. Normally rescues will not release un-altered dogs but this one had been very ill and my reputation as a responsible rescue home was well established. So Hannah Lee came to live with us – I pre-paid for her spay and scheduled it for when she was 6 months old and fully healthy.
The Colonel was due to come home from Afghanistan any day. I dashed halfway to Miami to pick Hannah up. Potty training in less than a week – no problem! Well – I might have done it in a week but Hannah’s new Daddy surprised us and came home 3 days later!
I can’t believe I did not get the homecoming on film but I was kinda busy picking him up, driving him home and experiencing his reaction! I handed him his 12 week old daughter and stood back. Tears ran down his face. He asked “Is she ours? Can we keep her? Is she a rescue?” Yes, yes and YES! Still chokes me up to remember him dusty and dirty in his army uniform, hugging Hannah Lee and crying. Needless to say, Hannah is a daddy’s girl and a diva par excellence! Needless to say she found her forever home and will be loved and cherished til the end of her days.

Unpatriotic
Fireworks on the 4th
used to make me ooh and ah
now they make me boo.
A toast to the 4th of July
ok – so this is not an unpatriotic haiku – it is just a tribute to the poor scared pets who will suffer today. Thankfully I currently have a houseful of rescued dogs who are not fearful – of much of anything! But I have lived with a dog terrified of thunder and fireworks. I can forgive Mother Nature but I lived with Charles for over a dozen holidays where he shook and trembled his way through the booms. His last years were more gentle as he lost his hearing but the booms that shook our house still shook him up.
I have heard that the busiest day for Animal shelters is July 5th as there are so many displaced pets who have run away or bolted in fear. Keep your pets safe. Make sure they have on collars with ID and are microchipped. Use doggy downers if you have them. In this case it is ok to say YES to drugs! Music or television might help mute the sound and the fear. I would not suggest the 1812 Overture, however!
I know I will be cuddled up with my dogs tonight so they can reassure me that no wayward firecrackers will set the piles of drying storm debris we still have all up and down our property! We all do have our fears!

Nature Girl Surveys Her Domain
As I trudge thought the devastation of my post-storm yard, I spy a butterfly – a Monarch? Painted Lady? Not sure but I know I want a picture so I begin to chase it with the camera.
It eludes me at first – I get a shot but try for a better one.
Elusive Monarch-type.
Stumbling over branches and into holes left by downed limbs, I attempt my National Geographic worthy shot and WALK INTO A SPIDER WEB. Well, white women may not be able to dance, but I sure did jump up and down and gyrate, flapping my arms and slapping my face and neck and scared the butterfly off but good.
Up to the rose garden which survived the storm mostly unscathed. Pretty, right? Then I see the leaves!
Japanese Beetles have been munching on my roses! To add insult to injury I catch a pair enjoying carnal relations on a bloom. Well, I presume they were enjoying it! I slap them down! Coitus Interruptus! No post coital snacking on my roses!
I begin to storm up toward the house to Google Death to Japanese Beetles when in an ADD moment – LOOK THERE IS A CHICKEN – I stop to pick ripe yellow teardrop tomatoes. Filling my pockets with fruit I see the damn butterfly again and take off after it!
Traipsing thru the debris to capture the butterfly on film, I step in, you could probably guess, DOG CRAP.
I give up, come inside, sit at the computer to blog and then remember I am sitting on a dozen ripe tomatoes.
Sigh. I give up.

Color a Difference for Others...
Reblogged from Dogs for the PAWS:
Many of us have heroes. Some of us are heroes. And some of us know heroes. One of our “paw” heroes is Surf Dog Ricochet the internationally known and loved SURFice Dog. If you haven’t heard of her pawmazing work with numerous charities, the hundreds of thousands of dollars she has raised for others in need, her many accommodations and awards then you need to educate yourself by going to her website right now…we will share her link in just a minute…keep reading… She has been interviewed on national television as well as being a certified surf dog.
Missy is cool. I am way overloaded with storm clean up. The solution? A ReBlog from way cool Dogs For The Paws!

Be Your Dog’s Best Friend
Go to the store.
Go now.
Get 32 ounces of organic plain yogurt. Get Dixie Cups. Hope you have some ripe bananas and peanut butter at home. Hope you have a blender.
Combine 32 oz. plain yogurt with 2 Tbl. of peanut butter and 2 very ripe bananas. Blend together in blender or food processor. Freeze in Dixie cups.
Watch the dogs drool. Mine usually get several spoonsful when I make the treats and can hardly wait til it freezes for the real Homemade Frosty Paws.**

Tiffin is dying for Frosty paws. Audrey is licking her lips already!
And that is how to be your dog’s best friend!
** some folk add honey – we don’t think it is necessary! Can make with applesauce instead of peanut butter. Humans have been known to eat this treat as well! I try to always have a few ripe bananas in the freezer for banana bread or Frosty Paw emergencies!
