Write! Write every day. Write even if you don't feel like it. Write even if you don't have anything to say.

And read. Read your favorite authors, read authors you don't know, read genres you've never attempted. Every book you read teaches you something, even if it's just that you never want to read or write anything else like it. The more you read, the more your taste and talent will develop.

Finally, be willing to be bad for a while. It takes time and practice to write well, and your first work will rarely be your best. Don't toss your first efforts aside, though. Put them away and read them later. You'll be amazed at how much you can learn by seeing what worked and what didn't.(less)

It's stressful, expensive and usually counterproductive for everyone involved (except maybe the lawyers). That's how "Art of the Apology" became a more general self-help book. We're all human and we all make mistakes that can do lasting damage in all kinds of relationships. I'm a great believer in the value of mending fences, so I wrote the book to help people do that.(less)

It’s Independence Day, which means the streets will be filled with parades today and the skies with fireworks tonight. There will be lots of picnics and barbecues, plenty of flags and streamers, and celebrations from sea to shining sea.

Throughout the day and throughout the nation, people will correctly remind each other that “freedom isn’t free.” The United States won its independence from Engl... Read more of this blog post »
