A new poem of mine “lavender Doe” was published in the March issue of Passengers Journal, and beautifully read by Hayley Davis. I was surprised they added the voice. Love it! I hope you do, too.

Shutta’s Poem a Winning Poem in 3rd Wednesday Poetry Contest

My poem “Reading Brodsky (in English) While Stirring Soup” is a winning poem in the 3rd Wednesday Annual International Poetry Contest. (Along with Ken Hines and Zoe Robles.) The journal does not have “places”–just 3 winners from all the submissions in keeping with the name of their publication. (More than 650 this year!) The judge was poet Joy Gaines-Friedler. You can read the whole issue for free by clicking on the picture above or here. My poem appears on page 77, and a bit about the contest on page 75.

Of my poem Joy says:

“Reading Brodsky (in English) While Stirring Soup. The
juxtaposition of the world inside the home with the world of the
outside – a world fraught with persecution, forced emigration, and
a poetry that reflects that life, matched with the heartiness of a
slow simmering soup is absolutely delightful.”

Below is the poem. (With a pic. I added.) Enjoy!

Sound, Shape & Sense: The Work of Our Words Presentation by Shutta Crum

Have you ever thought about the sound and shape of the words you’re writing and the impact they make on the reader? You’ll gain a whole new appreciation for language when you attend Shutta Crum’s Zoom presentation on Saturday, January 23 at 10:30 a.m. In “Sound, Shape & Sense: The Work of Our Words,” Shutta will lead us in the study of creating soundscapes (music) with our words by taking a deep look at literary techniques and mentor texts. Sound will be explored in terms of how it intensifies voice, enhances characterization, and expands setting. Shape will be looked at in terms of how words and white space grace the page to further understanding. And sense will be studied in the way word choice amplifies the historical and cultural aspects of our work. Shutta Crum is the author of three novels, thirteen picture books, one volume of poetry, numerous individually published poems, and many magazine articles. And, currently, she is a regular blogger for the Florida Writers Association website.

The link will be published here by January 21. So check back for the Zoom link!

See ya soon,

Shutta

A Giggly Podcast Interview with Shutta

Hah! A very giggly interview with yours truly on the Florida Writer’s Podcast, January 2021. I guess when you grow up to be a children’s book writer, you never outgrow the giggles. On a serious note–i do mention writing poetry and getting books published as well as being invited to Japan and to the White House. (Perks of authorship.)
