Poem by Shutta. Aubade: Without Regret
Here’s a link to a newly published feminist poem I wrote: Aubade: Without Regret. Posted at the RedRoseThorns site. If you’ve ever had to escape a relationship–I hope you can relate to this poem. Thank You Burningword Literary Journal: a new poem by Shutta
A big thank you to the Burningword Literary Journal for accepting and publishing this new poem by Shutta: Madonna with Potatoes. It is a favorite of mine. I hope you like it too! It’s below, and here: bit.ly/3Lfk2Ui Leave a note here or at the journal if you like it! (Couldn’t help myself – – looking at all those old paintings the Christ Child looks like a large lumpy potato. Maybe, it’s just me.) There’s also a pic of my mom peeling potatoes that inspired the poem.

Shutta Crum is a Robinson Jeffers Prize Finalist, 2024
WOW! In May I was informed that two of my poems were honorable mentions in the Robinson Jeffers Tor House Prize (Tor Foundation). They also told me that this was the first time that a writer had two winning entries in the same year. The prize awards one first place which went to Story Rhinehart of Shaker Heights, Ohio. And my two poems were there with two other honorable mentions. YAY!

What I Bring to the Asking
–don’t despair of this falling world, not yet didn’t it give you the asking
Jane Hirshfield: Counting, This New Year’s Morning, What Powers Yet Remain to Me
it doesn’t weigh much
a modest bundle of breath
which i carry like a vagabond
i’ve drawn twine through each why?
and rested it on memory’s shoulder
each day a balance of questioning
of walking with one hand open
a penitent, risen from her knees
and come through to the asking
some days what I carry is heavier
and see—here in my hand—lies a simple ask
it’s wanting attention
it’s what I bring

Prize-Winning Poem: Newton’s Laws :: Angles > Angels by Shutta Crum
Here’s the poem that won a silver Royal Palm Literary Award at the 2023 FLA awards ceremony. Newton’s Laws : : Angles > Angels. After one more report of children murdered, I didn’t want to write a simple rant—through ranting, and tearing my heart out, is what I felt like doing. This format helped to vent my anger. Some poems are meant to shake us.
