Organizing for the Art Life in 2016, Part 5

DSC04197How do I stay energized? Minding my diet, my sleep, my exercise is a must. But what makes me sizzle? What makes me want to pop out of bed at 5:30 a.m. ready for work? [Continued here>>>]

Organizing for the Art Life in 2016, Part 4

DSC06026-HDR-EditMy favorite excuse: I’m getting ORGANIZED! But this year opens with my computers in good shape and relevant website pages updated for mobile users. Processes for writing, drawing, cataloging, dyeing, stitching, etc. are more or less under control. The issue here comes down to TIME and SPACE. – [Continued here>>>]

Organizing for the Art Life in 2016, Part 3

draw2016008If my production goals are about writing and textiles, why did I kick off the year with a commitment to a daily DRAWING exercise? Why did I spend hours reorganizing my photo files? But didn’t I read somewhere that the world was veering away from books and heading (back) toward visual storytelling? Should I even be asking myself these questions in Exploration Mode? Organizing for the Art Life in 2016, Part 2

draw2016001I tend to shy away from specific yearly goals. Plans are good but, in my sixties, I also give myself permission to follow shiny objects. However, this year a few projects seem obvious to tackle. [Continued here>>>]

Organizing for the Art Life in 2016, Part 1

MindMap_Work-2016I’ve been auditioning 2016 for over a week now. I decided to return to a scheme that served me well a few years ago. I organized my “art life” into 4 layers, or modes: production, exploration, infrastructure, and energizing. – [Continued here>>>]

Learning: Snow Dyeing Experiment

DSC06023In winter, you make the best of it. You make snow an ally. Short of skiing, you can use snow to make patterns on cloth… or so I read. Is this really a thing? I decided to test it out. [continued here>>>]

The Art Life: When Desire Is More Powerful Than Talent

DSC00527-EditLast night I finished compiling 15 years of digital photographs into a single Lightroom catalog. Over 40,000 images! I was motivated by a full hard drive on my laptop, but I couldn’t help noticing what a giant pile of shite I was diligently preserving. [Continued here>>>]

Year In Review: 2015

2015Suddenly, the year is over and I’m sitting down with a cup of coffee to complete my annual review, the 12th since I became my own boss at the end of 2003. This isn’t a Christmas letter reviewing our personal joys and sorrows. It’s my form of public accountability to myself, justifying my choice of the art life over employment and fending off the sleepy temptations of retirement. – [continued here>>>>]

Resurrected: THE UNDERGROUND ATHLETIC CLUB

As I celebrate THE SUDDEN SILENCE, a project 25 years in the making, a couple of people have asked, “So where’s THE UNDERGROUND ATHLETIC CLUB? Why isn’t that listed among your publications?” Where, indeed. I must have passed that draft around to everyone, so many people are familiar with it. Continue here>>>
