…..No such doubts assailed the mind of the dark stranger walking silently at speed towards the cabin. He had little compunction about his mission. He knew exactly how to do it and he was well equipped and prepared. He knew that just before dawn was the moment to catch the night watch at its least alert, as it would see the streaks of light piercing the dark of the sky as the signal that soon the danger would pass. The moon was sinking low, its silver glow now a dull and murky grey. The trees gave cover and reduced the light still further. As he drew near, he slipped his hand in a pocket and pressed the switch on a small instrument which would pass as a pager. This confirmed itself active with a soft bleep. It had jammed all the electronic sensors ringing the property. He already knew the frequency, which he had pre-loaded. He did not have to stop to allow the instrument to search…….

……In the Headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States, in Langley, Virginia, a meeting had assembled. Such was the delicacy of the issue to be discussed, it was organised on the premise that it was not taking place. There were to be no recordings or minutes. Present were three men of uniform aspect, typical of mid-ranking public officials in the US; young middle age, short hair, neat shirt and tie, well cut suit hung on a figure honed sharp by regular visits to the gym. Art Bellwether, from the Office of the Deputy Director, Thomas Enwright,  from the Office of Russian and European Analysis (OREA) and Martin Kastenbaum from the National Clandestine Service (NCS)……..

By-Election: The Morning After

As is usual after a by-election sensation, everybody in politics and the media piles in with an opinion ranging from the dismissive to the ground breaking. Cameron says he will get the seat back next May. In the past after one of these dramas he would have. But this time things are different.

First everybody, even many of the elderly, is connected to everybody by social media and informed by such a variety of news streams that media management is difficult and manipulation impossible. Second, whereas in 1945 Labour and the Tories took 98%  of all votes, in 2015 they are predicted to get around 60%. Third, politicians are now regarded as snake oil salespeople; unless they are from UKIP. Fourth politicians from the Big Three parties have lost control of the political weather. Finally there is underpinning the public mood a rise of two forms of nationalism, Scottish and English, and the main parties are in trouble with both.

Labour is in serious trouble north of the border and the Scottish Nationalists are set to gain loads of their seats, making a Labour majority in Westminster difficult to pull off.  Now there are also being branded as anti-English because of a stupid tweet. If that idea takes hold there is no hope of victory in May 2015. But Cameron is set to gain not one single vote from these Labour difficulties, as he leads a split party, makes policy on the hoof, fails to foresee the consequences of his actions and may be facing a deteriorating economic climate.  What is different about the present political situation and why no political pundit has a clue what may happen,is because for the first time ever both Tory and Labour fed ups are headed to the same place, or the same two places.

North of the border they are going to the Scot Nats. South of the border they are going to UKIP. It is these two parties which will decide the outcome of the general election and there is now nothing that any of the others can do to change that.

‘…. Her body was tilted by padding under her hips. Consciousness faded. She awoke and heard voices echoing and dreamy. She was being lifted onto a stretcher. There was a throbbing noise. It grew louder. She saw blades circling. She was in a cabin. An engine roared. Gone again. Blackness. Back again. No engine noise. On a trolley. Moving fast. Everyone running. All gowned in blue. Shouted orders. A masked face close to hers. A woman, Rachael could tell by her eyes. They connected. She held those eyes with hers. They were her thread to life.

‘Hurry I am losing her!’

The masked face grew smaller and smaller. There were no sounds. All was still and peaceful. Then nothing….’

Banker’s Bonuses.

Britain has challenged the EU rule which says that bankers may not receive a bonus in excess of 100% of their salary. It has lost the first round but the legal process is not over. The government’s argument is the familiar one that if it has to apply this rule all the bankers will leave Europe and especially Britain, where London is the number one den for bankers in the world.

This is where our economy is so badly adrift and why the economic cake is now so biased towards the top that eventually if it is unchecked, it will lead to social upheaval and economic collapse. This is not a matter of opinion; it is a mathematical certainty. Therefore a measure to drive the bankers from our shores is a good, not a bad, thing.

Of course it would require the government of the day to set up an economy based upon productive manufacturing to feed consumer demand, affordable housing and energy and a reliance on investment rather than borrowing. Unfortunately such a remodelling is way beyond the capacity of either the current generation of politicians or Whitehall’s mandarins.

Here is an extract.

‘Thank you Prime Minister.’

Waterman had the politician’s knack of turning doubt into conviction. Having signed, his confidence returned. His voice now had the edge of authority.

 ‘Cuillick.’

‘Yes?’

‘This has got to work. We cannot have the wild allegations about Diana’s death or all the drama surrounding the Iraq dossier. This must be clean and final.’

The older man smiled.

‘It will be. It will work very well. You can be sure of that.’

He stood up, shook Waterman’s clammy hand and made for the door. As he reached it, the Prime Minister called after him.

‘Cuillick, one more thing.’

He turned.

‘Yes?’

‘Remember, no fuck ups!’

About the Book

Dr. Rachael Benedict is an American historian and a best-selling author. She has a British connection through her estranged father Saul, an English thriller writer. Saul, whose parents were of Anglo-German origin, has spent much of his life plotting to expose secrets from World War Two, which are so sensitive they have been subject to an extensive cover-up lasting seventy years. As the time approaches for him to make his move to expose duplicity, murder and lies at the heart of the British State, he seeks Rachael’s help. This provokes a killing spree as parts of the security services of both Britain and the United States become engaged in the drama, with one side determined to get the secrets out and the other determined to keep them hidden.

Set equally in the United States and Britain, the narrative grips from the first page, transporting the reader to the heart of government both in Washington and London and on into the darkest corners of the secret states on each side of the Atlantic. Rachael battles forward to unearth the truth both from intrigues of the Nazi era, but also within her own family, surviving three attempts on her life, before finally achieving her goal. Not only does she expose the truth from history and from her own roots, she has to delve deep into her own emotions to find the truth about herself.

Cameron Puts On The Frighteners

It is an old political trick. Declare a coming crisis before an election so the voters are scared of change. It often works but not always. It depends on who the voters trust most. At present they do not appear to trust anybody.

Cameron warns that the world in on the brink of another financial crisis. Might he be right? Sadly yes he just might. China, Japan and Russia are slowing (Japan has stopped), the EU is on the brink of recession, the Middle East is in chaos and Europe is destabilized because of the crisis in Ukraine. Huge amounts of QE have been pumped into the global financial structure since the last crisis, showing a big profit to the top 1% of the world population, but all the rest have seen their wages stagnate and their standard of living fall; their purchasing power has fallen as well. Meanwhile assets have become over-valued against productivity and demand. This may not yet be a crisis, but it is certainly the blueprint for one.

But if one is to issue lofty warnings it behoves a smart Prime Minister not to promote stupid things. And in the financial context there is nothing more stupid that the sanctions on Russia, which have almost brought European growth to a stop (Germany has been hit hard) and threaten the stability of the Russian financial system. It is now on the cards that a major Russian bank may go under. If one does it could well trigger a crash, just like Lehman Bros.

If that does not scare you it should and it is Cameron’s irresponsible finger which is on the trigger. He needs to think about that. So do we.
