Labour In Scotland: Now For Heavy Lifting
Jim Murphy has proved the decisive choice of Scottish Labour and politicians of all stripes have joined to wish this likeable politician well. However for this new leader there will be no honeymoon. Labour’s situation in Scotland his dire and Jim has very little time to put it right if there is to be any likelihood of a Labour majority government in Westminster. Of the 59 Westminster seats in Scotland 41 are Labour and Ed Milliband cannot afford to lose any in May. Yet opinions polls indicate that Labour may lose up to 30. Having lost the referendum, the Scottish Nationalists are well and truly on the rise and are a massive problem for Labour.
Labour in Scotland is down to 14,000 members. The Scot Nats have surged to 100,000. According to recent polls Labour is in the high twenties while the nationalists are in the low forties. There are only five months to go before the whole United kingdom votes. Jim Murphy has a mountain to climb, but his friends believe he can do it. None more fervently than Ed Milliband.

America: A Dangerous Moment
Dick Cheney has declared the influential senate report on torture as ‘full of crap’. This blog believes Mr Cheney to have a mixed reputation in the United States, but in the rest of the world he is hated and reviled for his contribution, as one of the most powerful vice presidents ever, to the flawed invasion of Iraq on a false premise with the terrible aftermath of chaos and suffering as the outcome of the mystical War on Terror. But what he went on to say is potentially seismic.
He asserted that the report’s conclusion that the White House did not know what the CIA were doing to prisoners is wrong and that the president knew everything. Mr Cheney never did give a toss what others thought of his views or indeed his actions. But to declare the the President of the United States was complicit in torture will, if true, eventually have repercussions of extraordinary gravity.
We need to say no more than that.

America’s Torture Torment
What the world suspected is now confirmed. Torture was used on post 9/11 suspects to gain information of little true value from people who may have given disinformation because they were either too clever or innocent with no information to give. Whatever the outcome torture is an absolute NO for a civilised democracy to use in whatever circumstances. It is truly shocking to learn that elements of the CIA could see nothing wrong is using methods pioneered by the Gestapo and Stalin’s NKVD and then lying to the American people about what they were doing. Britain is not in the clear either. It allowed refuelling stopovers for rendition planes and may have had MI6 agents listening in on the torture sessions.
There are plenty of Americans who will say that in defending the lives of Americans in their homeland, nothing is off limits, but the right wing Republican senator for Arizona, John McCain, made a brave speech yesterday criticising torture as an interrogation method not only because it is cruel but also because it yields sub-standard intelligence. His words have power, because he himself was tortured by the North Vietnamese and he is a hawk who speaks from the Right. President Obama stopped the practice when he came to office and believes that by owning up and taking the criticism, America can atone for this blot upon its national character.
Atonement is one thing, but recovering a shattered reputation is quite another. America has lost much of its moral authority through the calamitous foreign policies of the Bush era. The continuing detention of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay shocks the whole world and inspires only North Korea. The torture blow will prove fatal to any pretentions that its moral authority is intact or can be repaired. Moral authority once lost is gone. It relies on purity and when the purity is sullied, it is over.
This is the end of America as world leader. It does not mean that America will stop playing a role nor that it will stop being a force for good. But it does mean that the era when it bestrode the globe as the mega power in which everybody believed and had faith is past. From now on it will be an important voice, but there will be others to whom the world will listen and which ever more will prefer. In the end it may mean that the world will be a better place as may America. It will do the rest of the world good to have to take responsibility for its problems and it will do America good to look inside itself. There is a lot which needs fixing, but there is more that continues to inspire as the outstanding example for good in the extraordinary achievements of world’s greatest democracy. Those achievements will keep on coming. Make no mistake about that.

Food Banks: Something Is Not Right
There is something deeply wrong with an economic model which says that bankers and corporate CEOs have to be paid several million per annum salary in order to get them to work, yet the ordinary people who keep the services and infrastructure of their country running are paid so small a fraction of this, that the lowest paid are reduced to seeking to assuage hunger in food banks because the cost of finance, energy and public utilities which the fat cats run, is taking first call on their money.
This is truly shocking. It shocks the church leaders and all those who try to do their best by others. Make no mistake, if any of the post war Prime Ministers were alive to see this, whatever their party, Attlee, Churchill, Eden, Macmillan, Home, Wilson, Heath, Callaghan and yes Thatcher, they would be truly shocked more than we are.
Think about that before you go to sleep tonight. Things cannot go on like this. Neither should they.
