Born in Indonesia, Joannes Rhino was educated at the local state school until graduation in 1998 and continued to study in Hospitality University. Having no literature experiences whatsoever, he managed to publish his first novel “Etzhara” by the biggest traditional publisher in Indonesia and took him as one of the best young writers under thirty at Khatulistiwa Literary Award in 2009. His second psychological novel “Dream”, however, was the one that made him an overnight success. He then began to receive many invitations to attend book signings, talk shows, radio interviews and other literary activities. Hi Rhino, I don't know if i should ask you in english or Bahasa, so here it goes. I am currently working on my first book. The theme is thriller and some mystery here and there on the book. Thanks to you now I know I could translate my book into English and publish it overseas. So my question is, what was the biggest problem you had while translating and publishing it in foreign country? Thanks.

Anyway, first…moreHi Ricky, thanks for getting in touch. Well...to be frank, it's not easy...I'm tellin you. But when there's a will there's always a way. Anyway, first of all, translating into English is easy (I bet you can do it yourself). However, you may want to consider hiring professional editors and proofreaders to furnish your work, and this will cost you heaps. I am saying not just one, but 3 professionals at least. Why? Because you'll be amazed to find out that your 1st editor makes so many errors. This happens not because of their level of expertise, but more about the fact that we have different style of saying things in Bahasa and in English (It'll be a hard work for them). I don't suggest to hire native English speakers as they will charge you in ridiculous amount. But, again, I suggest you to hire more than 1 editors/proofreaders just to make sure your work is gonna look professional in the eyes of the world. As for me, it took me over USD $5000 in this phase to hire 3 editors/proofreaders (still there are reviewers saying that it still needs to proofread). There are so many things to be considered, but let me know if you need information in detail about editing your work.

Now, about publishing overseas, it's twice harder. Unless you have an inside man in one of the publishers, then it's hard (not impossible though). Alternatively, like most of famous authors do, try to self-publish it and hire a professional to do the marketing. Again, this will cost you even bigger than the editing part.

Well...don't wanna be a buzzkill by saying all these. It's the fact. Hope this helps. (less)
