FIX IT
It’s the weekend and for a lot of us that means a few cheats. For others it’s a full on party with a lot of Monday morning regrets.
Here’s a list from a recent airing of THE MARILU HENNER SHOW. This is Marilu’s fix-it list. Some of these sound counter-intuitive but trust us…they really work !!
If you’ve had:
too many carbs ——-> eat an apple
too much protein ——-> eat papaya
too much salt ————> eat watermelon
too much sugar ———–> eat grapes
You can hear more information like this every weekday from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) when Marilu discusses life through the prism of health.
Call during the live airing to be part of the conversation or listen on continuous loop throughout the day.

Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurants !
Fortunately we are well past the days when maintaining a vegetarian or vegan diet meant limited choices. You can travel almost anywhere and order a delicious and satisfying meal without compromising your health goals or your conscience. Thanks to the information that Marilu has provided through her books, and this community, most of us can navigate almost any menu and have a healthy, satisfying, and delicious meal.
And thanks to increased awareness there are more and more Veg-friendly restaurants popping up. Check out this article: http://www.travelandleisure.com/articles/best-vegetarian-restaurants-in-the-us and visit Happy Cow to learn more about the restaurants in your area, or wherever you may be traveling.

Healthy Kids
Marilu wrote an entire book dedicated to instilling healthy habits in children. At this time of year parents are dealing with the school lunch dilemma. You want your kids to eat what you send but you want it to nourish them and keep them fueled through the day.
We had one nursery school teacher tell us that parents often overestimate what their child can eat, sending in monster cookies. No one should ever eat anything that’s bigger than their own head. The teachers at that school were thrilled when parents sent bananas on snack day because they could cut them in half and give each child only as much as they could eat. No waste.
Try this concept with elementary students also. Put healthy ingredients on the healthy bread of your choice and cut it with a cookie cutter. It makes the lunches more interesting and keeps the portion sizes manageable. Just be sensitive to the age of the child. There’s an age where this is no longer fun …. but it’s not as young as you think !!

Meatless saves Money !
Many people who aren’t full fledged veggies or vegans will still try out a Meatless Monday dish in order to save money. Here are a few reasons why you might want to keep those intentions alive one more day.
Meatless saves money. Beans, rice, tofu, veggies…all of these are far less expensive, and much better for you, than animal flesh.
Pantry items lend themselves well to vegetarian dishes and save you extra trips to the store…saving $$ in the process. (How often do you get out with only the items on your list?)
Hearty meals made with those pantry items will save you time. A veggie curry, or a bean dish can literally be made in minutes.
Vegetarian meals made with whole foods are packed with nutrients and will keep you full longer, saving you from reaching for the snack bowl later.

COMMIT
Everyone does it. We make “resolutions” all year long. Fall is a time when many people re-start an exercise program, resolve to eat better, be more organized or any one of a hundred different goals.
Take some time today to reflect on what makes you more or less inclined to follow through. Do you need to break it down into smaller pieces, do you need more motivation, information or community support.
For those of you who are members here at Marilu.com are you staying committed to class? Remember to check in each day for inspiration and support.
Not a member? It’s not too late to get in on this amazing class. FALL IN LOVE WITH OCTOBER and commit to treating yourself well.

RE-THINK those “healthy” buys
We want to be trusting and we want to believe there’s truth in advertising. Especially at the end of a long busy day. It’s easier to go with our perceptions of what’s healthy, especially if the label says so. But loading your cart with pre-made guacamole, low fat yogurts (even if they are promising some of your money to charity) and energy bars can be doing you more harm than good.
Check out this article on the research that Melanie Warner did for her book “Pandora’s Lunchbox”

INDEPENDENT
THINK FOR YOURSELF ! This weekend we encourage you to read labels, stick to your health goals and do what you know is right, not what others are expecting of you. Be active, drink water, enjoy nature’s bounty and savor your food.
Do right by yourself and encourage the same independence in the people you love !!

Healthy School Snack
If you’re packing your children healthy snacks in the hope that they will be hungry enough to eat whatever you put there you might be wasting time and money…and FOOD. Make sure you’re including something you know they will enjoy. Make it interesting and get the kids involved.
If you want to have an occasional sweet treat there try making your own instead of buying processed snacks. Even a healthier version of processed food is still processed food.
We know that you’re pressed for time so we’re including a cookie recipe that’s flour free and can be made in ten minutes…counting baking time. If you’ve got 12 minutes you can use two of them to instruct the kids how to make them. Just be sure to supervise them with the oven.
1 cup of the nut butter of your choice
1 egg (vegans can use one egg quantity of prepared Ener-G…follow package directions)
1 cup Sucanat or Date sugar
Mix all ingredients with a fork and drop on ungreased cookie sheet. These are stickier than most cookie recipes so press down gently but don’t expect to flatten them.
Bake at 350 for 8 minutes. Remove carefully. They are crumbly….and delicate and delicious !!
