FOOD HANGOVER

Weekend free for all !    We’ve all have them.  We all have excuses for them too.

“It was a bad week.  I need to de-compress.”

“It was a great week.  I need to celebrate.”

“It’s a party.  I don’t want to insult my hostess.”

“It’s a buffet.  I want to get my money’s worth.”

And of course…..

“IT’S THE HOLIDAYS!”

SAFETY

In a National Lampoon movie you can spray your snow saucer with silicone, smoke near a dried out tree, take chances with a rickety ladder and end up with laughs instead of injuries.  Real life calls for caution.  Be aware of what you need to do to stay safe and protect children and pets.

STAY HYDRATED

Without the heat and humidity of summer it’s easy to forget that we need to stay hydrated in the cold weather.  It’s still important no matter what the thermometer says.   Be sure you drink water throughout the day, load up on salads and wet food, sip on herbal tea and keep moisturizers handy at your bedside, in the bathroom, on your desk and in the car.

NO BOUNDARIES

If you’ve ever noticed Marilu’s boundless energy you won’t be surprised to find out that it flows into everything she touches…especially this community.  We’re simultaneously finishing out the year in a mindful deliberate way, (supporting one another and adding GUSTO to our workouts, our menus and our holiday plans) while looking to the year ahead.

Join us to get a jump start on 2014 with our brand new class NO BOUNDARIES  beginning on the Monday following New Year.

Here’s an idea of where this class, led by the FABULOUS Coach Jan, will take us:

We all establish boundaries of many kinds, many starting with “I can’t” or containing what I call the “Big But!” (You know, “I want to, BUT…” ) This class will be discovering the boundaries we have created, then figuring out how to break through them to achieve our goals and dreams. We’ll discuss things such as New Year’s resolutions,  strategies for eliminating negative self talk, treating ourselves kindly, where to find motivation, losing our big buts, getting off our big butts and so much more. We will make concrete plans to reach our goals that will improve our lives and health!

Is that what you need for the new year?  Click here to join:   http://www.marilu.com/becomemember.php

Already a member?  Why not give a friend a membership for 2014?  What a great way to pay it forward, and having a friend in your life who supports your goals can be invaluable.

If you purchase a yearly membership for a friend they will be notified by Marilu herself !

E-mail marybeth@marilu.com for details.

Take time to consider this…..

This is a sobering post in the middle of a holiday season but with so many buffets, parties, punch bowls and baked treats it’s important to remember WHY we’re navigating past the dairy.

There are many DELICIOUS alternatives to conventional dairy products that there’s no need to sacrifice your health on the altar of taste and convenience.  Check out this space and membership at Marilu.com for great recipes and product recommendations.  http://www.marilu.com/becomemember.php

Ever since the Fukushima disaster in 2011, researchers have been testing foods and vegetables for radioactivity. The Department of Nuclear Engineering at UC Berkeley has been taking radiation samples since the Fukushima meltdown. They have tested both raw milk and store-bought, and have detected radioactive isotopes cesium-134 and 137 (Cs-134, Cs-137). This is alarming when you consider dairy as a “radioactive indicator” of our food supply. Dairy is a good indicator for radiation, because cows consume grass, food crops and water supplies. In simple terms, when dairy starts testing positive for radioactivity, it’s an indication of radioactive contamination of the entire food supply.

MANDELBROT

We’ve heard good things about this Mandelbrot recipe from HEALTHY HOLIDAYS.

Enjoy !

1 cage free egg, plus 2 egg whites

1 cup Sucanat

1/3 cup vegetable oil

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon almond extract

2 and 1/2 cups flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

pinch of salt

1/2 cup skin-on sliced almonds

Combine the egg, egg whites, and Sucanat in the bowl of a mixer and mix at high speed until pale yellow, thick, and mousse-like, about 10 minutes.  Reduce the speed to low and mix in the oil and the extracts.  Sift in the flour, baking powder, salt, and almonds and beat just to mix.  Trasfer the dough to a mixing bowl, cover, and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or preferably overnight.

Preheat the oven to 350.

Wet your hands.  Lightly spray a non stick baking sheet with oil.  Turn the dough onto the sheet and pat it into a rectangle about 18 inches long, 3 inches wide and 1/2 inch high.  Using a sharp knife (dip the blade in cold water) make a series of parallel, 1/2 inch wide widthwise cuts through the top of the dough, each about 1/4 inch deep.  Bake until lightly browned, 20-30 minutes.  Transfer the loaf to a cutting board.  Cut all the way through the cuts you made earlier.  Return the slices to the baking sheet, keeping them 1/2 inch apart.  Bake until firm and lightly browned, 5 to 10 minutes more.  Let the mandelbrot cool to room temperature.
