Get moving!

On this holiday weekend, get out and enjoy all the festivities.

Gear up for the fun with this old favorite, in a slightly more energized (and still kind of old, yikes) version.

Fitness Friday * Reverse crunches

Crunches – done regularly – are the easiest and best exercise for toning the abs. We all know it. We all get a little bored with crunches, though. So let's try reverse crunches – an exercise that works the lower abs (a real problem area for women).

Lie on your back with your hands palms down just beneath your buttocks and your back pressed flat to the floor.

Bend your legs a little at the knees, cross your ankles, and lift your legs above you, feet to the ceiling.

Contract (squinch) your...

Featured recipe from Marilu's table * Banana (and other) ice "cream"

In the spirit of the holiday week (Canada Day on July 1 and the Fourth of July in the USA), and all the picnics and cookouts and parties that summer holidays bring, we're sharing an excellent recipe for non-dairy ice "cream." You don't even need an ice cream maker!

Member Kim in IN shared this recipe and its variations with us. She says, "It is really a 'cool' way to serve my family fruit during this hot and humid time of year. My son wanted to know if he could have some for breakfast. At...

Happy Canada Day!

It's the celebration of Canada's birth from two British colonies and a British province in 1867.

Fireworks, parades and community celebrations are in order – just as they will be over the weekend in the USA for the Fourth of July.

It all makes us think about identity and independence.

Are you the person you want to be? Do you know who you want to be? Maybe write it in a journal, or make a vision board – articulate who you want to be. After all, it's really hard to get there if you don't...

Antibiotics in meat are a "public health threat"

Need another reason to eat less meat? How about antibiotic resistance?

The Food and Drug Administration is urging meat producers to limit the amount of antibiotics they give animals in response to public health concerns about the drugs.

The FDA said antibiotics in meat pose a "serious public health threat" because the drugs create antibiotic-resistant bacteria that can infect humans who eat it….

Of greater concern, the agency said, is when producers use antibiotics on healthy animals to speed...

Today is your day! Believe it!

Start your day with some positive thinking. This IS your day.

Your day to be your best.

Your day to contribute.

Your day to step it up.

Your day to make a positive change.

Your day to shine.

Get motivated with a little Shakira. We like to use this song for kickboxing – it makes us feel strong in body and mind. (But, you know, kicking a soccer ball around is good, too.)

Do meat-based diets fuel depression?

From PCRM

Vegetarians have lower instances of depression, according to a new study in Nutrition Journal. Researchers looked at 60 vegetarians and 78 meat-eaters in the southwestern United States and found that vegetarians scored significantly better on standardized mood tests. The mood tests measured depression, anxiety, and stress and were compared to food frequency questionnaires.

Water, water everywhere

… So please get some to drink!

Did you know that your body is about 60 percent water by weight?

Some organs have an even higher percentage of water. Your brain? About 70 percent water. Your blood? Over 80 percent water. Your lungs? About 90 percent water.

Without adequate water intake, every system in your body slows down and becomes sluggish. It's like those commercials for the oil that your car engine needs – when the engine oil gets sticky and gunky, your car breaks down. When your...
