The Total Health Makeover goes where you go !

One of the best things about The Total Health Makeover is that it's a lifestyle that helps you feel your best and get the most out of your busy life.  No pre-packaged meals, no weighing and measuring.  It's just about making the best choices each day – wherever you are, whatever you're doing!

Of course that means traveling and dining out.  We've found that there are ways to make healthy choices in nearly every store and restaurant, but some establishments make that easier than others.

Here are a few guides that can help you find suitable stores and restaurants in your area,  or anyplace you plan to visit.

Balancing your child's plate

A recent study shows that when children are given a large portion of an entree that they will eat less of everything else that's offered.  Of course we're like that as adults also so we shouldn't be surprised.

If you'd like your child to eat more vegetables then decrease the amount of other foods on the plate.   You can read the entire article here:

http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2012/02/another-trick-for-getting-kids-to-eat-their-veggies-serve-them-less/252424/

While we don't agree with the recommended servings mentioned in this article (meat, dairy etc.) there is some excellent advice regarding the presentation of your child's food, and most especially the example your setting with the balance of options on your own plate !

There's no magic pill

With a change in diet being the single most effective step a person can take to reduce their risk of heart disease it would seem like a no brainer.  So why do we reach for the pharmaceuticals?

Studies have shown that up to 70% of heart disease can be averted with the right regimen, According to Walter Willett, MD, chair of nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health, up to 70 % of heart disease can be averted with the right lifestyle choices.
70 %
When asked if diet alone is as powerful as drugs Dr. Willett had this to say;  "Oh, no, it's much more powerful. Statins, the most effective single medications for reducing heart disease, only cut risk by 25 to 30%."
A healthy diet is a powerful weapon against disease. Stay in touch here to find out ways to improve your diet and add a healthy lifestyle to your own arsenal.

Obesity and Cheese

"The obesity epidemic is not caused by inactivity, bread, rice, gluttony, weak will, or a bad childhood. It is caused by a tsunami of unhealthful foods, and one of the worst, perhaps surprisingly, is cheese."  Dr. Neal Barnard

It's no wonder that Marilu and Dr. Barnard from The Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine, work so well together.  Both are tenacious about discovering the truth about how our diet affects our health.  And both are passionate about getting the word out.   The above quote was taken from a recent article.  You can read the entire article here:

Once you know the facts you can't "un-know" them.  Watch for news in the coming days about a new class here at Marilu.com that will allow you to focus on the individual steps of The Total Health Makeover.

If dairy is an issue for you we can help.

Hot and (Really) Steamy

We've been talking a lot about getting hot and steamy in the kitchen with delicious, healing, soups. Today we're going to take the steamy out of the kitchen and into the bedroom. (Or the living room, or back to the kitchen. We don't judge.)

On Valentine's day it's a good time to remind everyone that there are other factors to consider when leading a healthy lifestyle.  Turn on your television or pick up a ladies magazine if you want a chocolate recipe or a tip on where to buy discount flowers.  We're going to talk about the  benefits of a healthy sex life.

Sex relieves stress and can help lower blood pressure.
Sex burns calories. (about 85 calories in a half hour, but why stop there?)
According to the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health men who have sex twice or more a week reduce the risk of fatal heart attack by half.
Sex reduces the risk of prostate cancer.
Sex may boost your immune system.  Having sex once or twice a week has been linked with higher levels of immunoglobulin A
Sex strengthens pelvic floor muscles
Improved ability to sleep and more restful sleep is reported after engaging in sexual activity.

More and more it seems that the things we love are good for us!

People Pleasers and Social Dining

Researchers at Case Western Reserve University recently conducted a study that showed that individuals who want to maintain a sense of comfort in a social atmosphere will over eat in order to make others comfortable.  According to researcher Judy Exine, "They don't want to rock the boat or upset the social harmony."

Participants in the study were categorized according to survey answers and then placed in a social setting with an actor who was pretending to be a part of the study.  When the actor took candy from a bowl and offered it to the other participants, those who were categorized as "people pleasing" were far more likely to take the candy than those who were not.

It's fine to have a little something to be sociable but bear this in mind when you're with others this weekend.  It could affect the choices you make if you stop to think about WHY you're joining in on that appetizer for the table.

Sugar and Testosterone

A report from the USDA places our consumption of added sugars (ranging from table sugar to  high fructose corn syrup) up 43% since the 1950′s.  A large amount of that sugar is in processed, savory foods rather than desserts.  It's being added to tomato sauces, salad dressings, processed meats and many other items where you wouldn't think to look for sugar.

The obvious detriment is to our waistlines, our energy levels, complexion etc.  but sugar consumption may be affecting other areas of our lives as well.  Research from Massachusetts General Hospital shows that a large dose of sugar in the bloodstream immediately lowers levels of testosterone.  They gave 74 men a solution with 75 grams of glucose.  After drinking that solution the men experienced up to a 25 % drop in testosterone levels.  The level remained low for a full two hours.

That suggests that our diet has a measurable affect on our hormone levels.  Just one more reason to be aware of how much sugar you're consuming.    You might be skipping desserts and sweets only to have the sugar sneaking in through other foods.

The labels on the food you buy can make for some interesting reading.  Be a smart consumer and know what's in your food.

Worth the risk?

Is that fatty fast food snack worth the risk you're taking?  We know that poor eating habits take their toll over time but did you know that there's an immediate risk as well?

According to a study published in The Journal of the American College of Cardiology  three to five hours after eating a 900 calorie fast food meal, containing 50 grams of fat, 38 healthy adults experienced a temporary decrease in arterial dilation.

It's much easier to prevent poor health than it is to reverse it.  Think before you pull the trigger on a full fat "meal" in a bag.   We would argue that it's NOT a great value.
