Organize Your Life
Getting organized can help you find extra time in your day and money in your wallet. Looking for keys and important papers can make you feel disorganized.
Whether you do a spring housecleaning or not this is a good time to do a spring cleaning of your paperwork. Take some time to organize your file cabinet, and to have an in and out box for your mail.
Go through old receipts. File appliance warranties where you'll be able to find them. Put your insurance policies and your pet's health records in an easy to find spot.
Take a look at your cell phone bill and your cable bill. Know what you're being charged.
Think of this as taking stock before the seasons change and your schedule along with them. Make time to get involved. We've got a great class just around the corner. Booty Camp is always a good time here at Marilu.com and this year it's all about being vibrant and vivacious. You won't want to miss it !

Credit Cards and Your Health
WHAT you buy isn't the only decision you need to make at the grocery store these days. How you pay for those purchases is important also. A recent report in The Journal for Consumer Research indicates that people who are paying with a credit card are more likely to make impulse purchases of expensive snack foods, while those paying with cash will lean towards whole foods and healthier fare.
Studies have suggested that when we use credit cards we don't feel the "pain" of the purchase and may not put as much thought into what we're buying.
We're not suggesting that you ditch your cards. Many of us use them wisely, earn cash back and save ourselves trips to the bank and the inconvenience of carrying cash. Lose a wallet with cash and you've lost the money but credit cards can be cancelled with no financial cost to you.
So if credit is your preferred means of payment go right on using it, but be aware that you may need to think twice when you're traveling the snack aisle.
Stick to the perimeter of the store and put your hard earned money to work keeping you healthy.

Olive Salad
This olive salad is an easy way to add flavor to sandwiches, wraps and tossed salads. Or sprinkle it over hummus to spread on toast points as an alternative to bruschetta. There's big flavor here so a little goes a long way.
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 cup green olives, chopped
1 cup black olives, chopped
1/2 cup fresh red pepper, chopped
1 cup olive oil
2 Tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
2 Tablespoons white wine vinegar
Mix ingredients in a large bowl. Transfer to an air tight container that can be turned to allow the flavors to blend. Make 24 hours in advance.

Avoid the "free" food
It's the weekend and for many of us that means time to kick back and hang out with friends. If you're meeting in a restaurant be wary of the freebies. You know what we're talking about. The chips and salsa aren't the worst thing you could be snacking on but if you're famished you'll be eating mindlessly and having your server refill that basket means even more empty calories.
Try ordering your salad as an appetizer. It will arrive sooner and you'll be less inclined to overindulge on the less healthy appetizers.
The unlimited biscuits and breadsticks in some chains can be full of fat, and calories and have little or no nutritional value.
And the dessert that's included in the cost of your meal? Just because they include it, that doesn't mean you have to eat it.
Free isn't always a good deal. The bill always comes due…in one way or another.
Have a plan and be prepared before you head out this weekend. Enjoy your friends. Enjoy good food. To live your best life choose both wisely.

Meat and Mortality
Yes it's blunt but isn't it healthier to face the truth head on? What you eat affects how you look, how you feel and how long you live !
The Archives of Internal Medicine recently pusblished a report detailing the results of their study on the link between the consumption of red meat and mortality rates.
We're including that report here for those of you who prefer to digest all of the numbers and data.

Ag-Gag
You may have heard about the recent "Ag-Gag" bills in Iowa and Utah. If you're not sure what these bills are about, or what they mean to you, please check out this article by Dr. Neal Barnard.
Essentially they exist to protect factory farms and slaughterhouses from exposure when they engage in illegal and unsanitary practices.

Inhumane conditions are not just an animal welfare issue. There are serious consequences to the people who consume the products produced under these conditions. Especially at risk for food borne illness are children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems.
Be an informed consumer. If this issue is a concern to you learn what you can do to make your voice heard.

Lunch Money
Take a few minutes today to estimate how much you're spending on lunch each week. Chances are there's a connection between how much you spend and how much you could improve the quality of your lunches.
Taking the time to pack a lunch is a great way to have control over what's going into your body and it will save you money as well. You can make sandwiches and wraps healthier by choosing Veganaise over mayonaise. Take it a step further and choose mustard or hummus or just load it up with wet veggies like tomatoes and cucumbers.
Add healthy fats with guacamole and olive oil.
Pressed for time? If your workplace has a place to heat food you can take leftovers from your meals.
Save yourself time and money AND protect your health !
