Healthy Lifestyle….Memory Tips!
ON YOUR MARK, GET SET….
After a full night’s sleep your brain is in need of replenishment. Having breakfast refuels your brain by supplying the energy and proper nutrition it needs. Eating a healthy breakfast is like throwing some small twigs on a fire to get those mental flames rising again. If you toss a log on the embers you’re going to kill the fire. In the same way, a healthy breakfast (I recommend beginning with a cleansing fruit) will stoke your metabolism and prevent your from feeling famished later in the day, forcing you to toss a big old log on the fire when you pig out at lunch.
With a little advance planning you can have a healthy, whole-foods breakfast ready in minutes. That’s going to give you a better start to your day and help you to be more productive. It’s the foundation, the cornerstone, for the rest of your day.

Fiber is an integral part of food digestion and helps make sure your brain gets the nutrients it needs. With the proper amount of fiber in your diet your brain works faster and is able to focus better. Fiber helps increase brainpower, mood, memory, and attention by providing the brain with the nutrients that start antioxidant actions. This process helps to prevent dementia, Alzheimer’s, and overall degeneration of the brain. Sutdies have shown that cognitive performance was improved in people with high-fiber diets that were low in sugar and refined flour.

Marilu will be appearing on “Live with Kelly” TODAY (Friday June 8th) on a segment called “Grilling with the Stars” . Check local listings for time and channel.
This is a charity competition and should be a lot of fun. Andy Samberg is co hosting and Marilu is representing The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
Besides being a fun event you know that Marilu’s recipe with be delicious and healthy and her segment will be high energy, informative and INSPIRING !

MOVE IT OR LOSE IT
“Physical activity is vital because it increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain, as well as the rest of your body. The Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least a hundred and fifty minutes of moderate aerobic exercise a week, such as brisk walking, or light jogging. Alternatively, you can do seventy-five minutes of vigorous aerobic activity, such as jogging or aerobic dancing spread throughout the week. Research reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences also concluded that aerobic exercise not only improves but also prevents shrinkage in the hippocampus, our memory center. ”

Healthy Lifestyle…Memory Tip !
It’s no surprise that people who live a healthy lifestyle have better cognitive function, and of course, better memories. (And very likely a lot of HAPPY memories as well.) It’s also no surprise that Marilu is very active in both of these arenas. This week, in honor of Marilu’s memory class in the member’s area we’re going to share some of her best healthy tips from her new book bestselling book, TOTAL MEMORY MAKEOVER.
EAT THE RAINBOW
Antioxidants help protect your brain cells and keep mental functioning at a high level. Fruits, especially citrus fruits, and many vegetable are antioxidant rich. Eat more oranges, bananas, apples, raspberries, strawberries, tomatoes, mangoes, kiwis, and blueberries. In order to balance free radicals in the body it is important to eat foods rich in antioxidants since these help reduce the damage of oxidatve stress in the brain. As we age the natural antioxidants produced by our body tend to decrease, and this increases the risk for more memory-related problems, diseases, and age-related issues.
