I've been an illustrator for several decades, and I came to writing in the 1980s when I approached the editor of a magazine for whom I was doing a lot of artwork and asked if I could submit a few features and articles as well. He was skeptical and left the first manuscript sitting on his desk for a few weeks before he finally looked at it and called to tell me, "This is pretty good. I'm going to run it." I subsequently did a lot of features, reviews, criticism, and so forth, mostly in the popular culture vein, but I kept writing fiction as well until a piece finally landed on the right person's desk and they bought it. It's all about doing what you like and persisting at it until something you throw at the wall sticks.(less)

First Contact: Part II

Let’s return to my theme from my last entry, of “first introduction” books that began a lifetime romance with their work.

Once again, I’m going to refrain, for just a little while longer anyway, from shilling my own writing to concentrate on that of some of the people who have inspired and even taught me.

Had my first encounter with William Hjortsberg been an early book like, say, Toro Toro Toro or

This collection of short fiction, set mostly in the 60s and 70s, delivers subtle and unanticipated insights with tasteful and understated wit. An added delight for me is the allusion (of the title story) to Huidekoper Place in Washington, D.C., a won ...more

52 Pick-Up by Elmore Leonard
"52 Pick-up is an early crime novel from Elmore Leonard, published in 1974 when Leonard was still in the process of shifting from writing westerns to writing crime novels, and it shows all the hallmarks that would make Leonard one of the greatest crim" Read more of this review »

Well that goes to show you don’t judge a book by its cover. I read 150 pages and felt like shooting myself, this is the most ludicrous excuse for an addition to Mario Puzo’s “family” that could possibly be " Read more of this review »
