18 Haziran 1936'da Kıbrıs, Lefkoşa'da doğdu. Lefkoşa Türk Lisesi'ni bitirdi. Ocak 1954'te ilk şiir kitabını yayımladı. Aynı tarihte, Britanya Kraliyet Hava Kuvvetleri'nde askerliğe başladı. 1956'da Londra'ya gitti ve bir daha adaya dönmedi. 1956-1988 yılları arasında, İngiliz Askeri Kütüphanesi ile British Council'da kitap ve yayınla ilgili çeşitli işlerde çalıştı. Emekli olduktan sonra Fransa'ya gitti. Şu anda, Kıbrıslı Levanten toplumunun eski merkezi Lusignan bölgesinde yaşamını sürdürüyor. Türkçe, İngilizce, Fransızca yazan Taner Baybars, aynı zamanda Nâzım Hikmet'ten çeviriler yaptı, çağdaş Türk şiirini İngiliz diline tanıttı.
