However, I always had two or three weeks of columns finished and ready to go to my editors, so I could avoid feeling the distress of not being able to write.

I had a very long hiatus between my last writing project and my current one, but once the idea for the current book came along it was hard to deny it. I HAD to write.

I think that's the best way to deal with writer's block. Don't push it. Take time off when need be. Learn from the farmer's field that has to have periods of being fallow before it can be fertile again.(less)

With my latest project, I would be putting on my makeup when a great phrase or two would pop into my head. I would pick up my iPhone and go to the "Note" app there and dictate the thoughts into the phone only to have more stuff flow out of me. Thinking I got it all down, I'd go back to putting on my makeup only to have more ideas flow. Back to the iPhone I went. In this manner, entire scenes for my writing day would be ready to go. I sent those "Notes" to my email and then copied and pasted them into my manuscript. Then I waited for more stuff to flow. And luckily it seems to do so when I am actively writing! That's the best thing about being a writer! I love it!(less)
