Demon Copperhead

Demon Copperhead won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction earlier this year. I often don’t enjoy books with this accolade, but I liked this one. Most reviews will state that it is a modern retelling of Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield. I have not read that Demon Copperhead won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction earlier this year. I often don’t enjoy books with this accolade, but I liked this one. Most reviews will state that it is a modern retelling of Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield. I have not read that classic, so I cannot comment, but I can tell you this, it had elements of many amazing books that have been popular over the years – such as The Goldfinch and White Oleander – all rolled into one. I’ll go into detail on this later, but first, here is the basic plot:

Damon Fields, a.k.a. Demon Copperhead, narrates the story. This is good, because the book is harrowing and as we travel through his life story, we are at least assured he survives it. We start with his birth to a teenage single mother – and drug addict – living in a single-wide trailer in the mountains of southern Appalachia. Ultimately the mom dies leaving Demon in foster homes where life is beyond tough, but where lifelong friends are made. Ultimately, he catches a break and has a chance at life in his high school years. He even becomes a high school football star! But then a knee injury sets him off on the road of pain killers at exactly the time that oxycodone, pill mills, and the opioid epidemic arrived.

Post high school years are punishing due to his relationship with an addict and the untimely death of many a friend, not to mention his own addiction. Ultimately, he hits rock bottom. He tells us this on page 473 and the chronicling of his misery goes on until page 508. In other words, Kingsolver doesn’t just tell us in short hand that he hit a low, she shows it in detail and has it running on continuous loop through Demon’s head.

Here are the other books that I thought of as I read this one:

• The Goldfinch featured a young boy and the untimely death of his mom.
• White Oleander had a stark depiction of foster care.
• Empire of Pain, a non-fiction work, gave the entire history of Oxycodone and the opioid epidemic.
• Educated showed the pull of home even if it is not the healthiest of places for us.
• Where the Crawdads Sing showed another orphaned child with a talent that saved the day.

Beyond the fullness of the plot, the writing is vivid and wrenching. Here are some favorite quotes:

• On Demon’s relationship with his mom: “If you were surprised a mom would discuss boyfriend hotness with a kid still learning not to pick his nose, you’ve not seen the far end of lonely. Mom would light me a cigarette and we’d have our chats, menthols of course, this being in her mind, the child-friendly option. I thought smoking with Mom and discussing various men’s stud factors was a sign of deep respect.”
• On describing his addiction: “I was still in the good part of my day, before fine and dandy edges over to sad and irritable. Then come sweats, yawning, itching, goosebumps, shaking and puking. These phases I could read like a watch. I was optimistic on getting home before fucked o’clock.”
• On the many losses in his life: “Live long enough, and all things you ever loved can turn around to scorch you blind. The wonder is that you could start life with nothing, end with nothing, and lose so much in between.”
• On a hard-won gratitude: “The only roads I knew were full of people that would sooner run me over then help me out. I could end up as dead as my mom and baby brother on any given day. I settled on being glad this was not the day. I had a full belly, and wasn’t getting rained on. Tomorrow, another story.”
• This last quote brings me to my major take away from the book. In it, Demon says, “Outside of the dummy classes, you’d be hard-pressed to find a kid in Jonesville Middle that had ever held down a job. Being friends with such people entailed listening to made-up problems to some degree.”

The major takeaway? This book reminds me how fortunate I am to have had a “normal” life with “normal” problems – many of them made up to some degree. It makes me aware that most of the hard knocks I have experienced in life are the ones I read about in terrific books like this one. ...more

The most interesting thing about the book – a least for me as a writer – is that it is a collaboration between two well-known authors, Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan. How did they share the story telling tasks here? Jodi wrote the chapters told from Liv’s point of view, and Jennifer wrote Lily’s chapters. I can’t wait to tell you more about the amazing way this collaboration came about…

But first, here is the basic story: Lily is a teenage girl found dead at her home. Foul play is suspected. The main person of interest is her boyfriend, Asher, who is Olivia’s son. As the book moved toward legal proceedings, I thought the plot might be similar to Defending Jacob, the 2012 book where a teen is accused of murder and where his parents aren’t always sure of his innocence. Adding to this thought process is the fact that Asher’s father/Liv’s ex-husband was physically abusive, so it is possible that Asher would follow in those footsteps.

Before long, though, there is a major plot twist regarding Lily that makes this more than just a teen love story gone wrong. But my lips are sealed. You’ll need to read Mad Honey to know about this part of Lily’s history.

Since I can’t reveal the twist and since I sure won’t tell you whodunit, let me get back to the unique way in which this book came about.

The two writers knew about each other, but did not know each other personally. Jennifer loved Jodi’s work ever since reading The Pact in 2003. Jodi had read Jennifer’s 2013 memoir, She’s Not There, and had written a blurb for Jennifer’s 2016 novel, Long Black Veil.

In 2017, Jennifer woke up from a dream that handed her Mad Honey’s exact plot, including the twist. But there is one more piece to add. She also dreamed that she would co-author the book with Jodi Picoult.

Jennifer went on Twitter to tell her followers, “I dreamed I was co-authoring a book with Jodi Picoult!” It was within minutes that she received a private message back from Jodi. “What was this book about?” As it turns out, the book’s topic was something that interested Jodi. Imagine Jennifer’s shock when she next got a message from Jodi in all caps: “OMG I LOVE THIS. LET’S DO IT.”

One final item to discuss before closing, why is the book called Mad Honey? In the novel, Liv is a beekeeper. She tells us lots of things about bees as she tries to figure out nature in general and human nature in particular. There really is something called mad honey that contains poisonous “grayanotoxins.” It has been used in biological warfare as far back as 399 B.C. Liv tells us that the secret weapon of mad honey is that you expect it to be sweet, not deadly.

While the information about honey was interesting, it was a bit extraneous to me. Meanwhile, all the information surrounding the plot twist was fascinating. And even more than that, it was great to see how two writing pros worked together to make a very worthwhile read. ...more

The book opens with a prologue in which Sally becomes enraged when she wakes up to the news on social media that her office mate, Danny Horst, is dating Annabel Lily. As she tells us, “Annabel Lily [is] a gorgeous, talented, world-famous movie star, and Danny [is] a schlub. He [isn’t] a bad guy, and he, too, [is] talented. But for Christ’s sake, he [is] a TV writer, a comedy writer – he [is] a male version of [Sally].”

Sally tells us that this is the third time a “bona fide celebrity and a TNO staffer who’d met on the show” have become a couple. What is galling to Sally is the fact that the celebrity is always a woman and the staffer is always a man. She firmly believes that a romance would never occur the other way around, “that a gorgeous male celebrity would never fall in love with an ordinary, dorky, unkempt woman. Never. No matter how clever she was.”

All of that takes place in the prologue.

To deal with her anger in this situation, Sally turns to comedy. She writes a sketch called, The Danny Horst Rule, which she promotes at the Monday morning pitch meeting for the upcoming show. Noah Brewster is the extremely handsome celebrity for the week. He is a fairly unusual guest in that he will be both the host and the week’s musical guest. Like Sally, Noah is thirty-six. He has been famous for more than fifteen years. He has sold more than twenty million albums.

The first section of the book takes the reader through a typical – and very frenetic – week behind the scenes at the show. We see pitch meetings, all-night writing sessions, the submission of sketches, a table reading of the sketches, and we cheer when we see which sketches make it into the preliminary lineup of the show. When we get to the day of the show, we also see a 1 PM run-through, an 8 PM dress rehearsal before a live audience, and an 11:30 live show before a new audience. The first after-party occurs at 1:30 AM, with others to follow.

With this first section of the book, readers see Sittenfeld’s first magical feat – she writes humorously about being a comedy writer. As it is said, if you have to explain a joke, it isn’t funny. But she explains a lot about jokes and it is funny. I would think it daunting to write the behind the scenes workings of a SNL-type show. Sittenfeld pulls it off beautifully.

To get to her second magic act, we need to get back to the plot. As readers may guess from the story’s set up, during their week of togetherness, Noah and Sally are about to fall for each other.

As you may guess, Sally will be very skeptical of such a relationship working out. To tell you the truth, I was too! I remember being charmed by the movie, Pretty Woman, but I was very certain that Richard Gere’s character and Julia Roberts’ character didn’t stand a chance of staying together in the long run. Thus, the other amazing thing Curtis Sittenfeld does in this book is that she not only makes a romance between Sally and Noah believable, she finds a way to show us that a long-term relationship is in the cards.

Together, the three have weathered a tragic past: Adam raised the kids on his own when his wife died shortly after Abby’s birth, when Ken was a small child. They are a close-knit family in many ways, though each of the “kids” has issues with their dad and they also have issues with each other. Indeed, there is something that happened between Ken and Abby in their childhood or adolescence that upended their relationship. It is hinted at so broadly, it is easy to figure out. But read along to learn of the bigger “mystery” that intrigued me in this book.

To tell you about the cast of characters, all three are respected professionals.
• Adam is a brilliant oceanographer.
• Ken is a highly successful businessman with political ambitions.
• Abby is a talented visual artist about to get her big break in the art world.

But there is also a less admirable side to each of them:
• Adam has bipolar disorder and has decided to go off his meds so he can use the impending mania to come up with his next – and probably last – big scientific discovery. (We also learn he has gone off his meds in the past to the detriment of his children.)
• Ken is an enraged individual waiting to explode. He is in therapy for what seems to be a sex addiction and for marital problems.
• Abby is having an affair with a married man.

In alternating chapters, these characters speak to us to advance the story. We also hear from Ken’s wife, Jenny. She was Abby’s friend before she was Ken’s wife, but something has gone wrong between the two women. There is also someone named Stephanie who narrates some of the chapters. As we will see, all of these people have secrets that will impact the group.

The book opens in April of 2016 and moves towards a crescendo at Adam’s big birthday in August. The epilogue of sorts takes place in October of that year. This puts the book squarely in the middle of the 2016 election cycle when it looked like a woman was going to become President of the United States. Thus, female empowerment is a core issue here.

This brings me to the main mystery of the book as I perceived it: The three men in Abby’s life – the dad, the brother, and the married lover – all treated her miserably! Why wasn’t Abby the one who was enraged and waiting to explode? Happily, Adrienne Brodeur finds a fitting way for Abby to make her case against the men in her own quietly explosive style.

I am now hankering for a sequel to the book because I want to watch Abby become increasingly empowered and I want to know more about her artwork!
