If the words don't come, I stare at the screen for a while anyway. Sometimes I only write a few hundred words and have to switch gears. Sometime's I'll go back and read a few pages to try to find my groove again. Sometimes I'll pick up a favorite book and read a bit to loosen up. I could rattle off a dozen exercises I've read in books, but I consider writer's block to be like a battle of wills. I play the "what-if" game a lot in my head: what if that conversation had gone differently, what would make the most awkward Christmas dinner ever, what if I inherited a house and had to fix it and there was a handsome firefighter living in it?
