Drink Beer: Innovate!

MY FAVORITE DISRUPTIVE HERO

Lisa Compton, Regional VP, Starbucks. “Disruptive heroes are somebody who has altered the direction of your life. Lisa changed my life dramatically. I cannot imagine where I would be today if back in 1995 she didn’t hire me into Starbucks. She took a major risk in hiring me at that time.

“The risk beyond me not having experience was, at the time, I had a wicked good stutter. And my job was spending about 95% of my time on the telephone, and for a stutterer, the phone is like a deathbed. I found ways to cope to minimize the stuttering and my life today has been forever changed because of one person taking a risk that disrupted my life in such a positive, dramatic way. I’ve also incorporated what she did for me into how I interact with others.”

MY FAVORITE DISRUPTIVE CHANGE

“My favorite disruptive change is beer. Craft beer in America has disrupted the beer world. Sales for the big brewers have plateaued, flatlined or declining slightly. American craft beers are experiencing major growth.

“This is how disruptive that has become: When I travel to Belgium — and I’m a beer geek! — and I go to some of the top beer bars in the world, the folks behind the bar are gaga over American craft beers…More so than Belgian-brewed beers. It’s a disruptive force due to creativity and innovation. There are beers today that are being barrel aged — not just in whiskey barrels, but in wine barrels, rum barrels. Brewers are adding all sorts of imaginative ingredients: cocoa nips, cinnamon, habanero peppers.

“What everyone can take away from this is: Even if you are in a staid industry, find ways to be creative, find ways to say ‘Let’s change this up.’ Let’s start talking about ‘What if…?’ as opposed to What Is.”

FOR MORE: See his video below

Let's Disrupt This!

Making beer is said to be the second oldest profession after, you know, the other one. If these ancient traditions and ways of doing things can be disrupted through innovation, everything can!

Innovation is possible everywhere. If you’re not disrupting your company’s most treasured products and procedures, why not?! Get out there and disrupt something!

Job 1: Emotional Connections

Co-Founder, Southwestern Consulting

MY FAVORITE DISRUPTIVE HERO

“My favorite disruptive hero is Robert Smith, who is the CEO of Andy Andrews. I was struggling as a first-time author. He came up to me and said he thought I had what it takes. He invited me over his house and he showed me one of their book proposals. When I saw his book proposal, it changed everything for me!

“What I learned was that day was the power of pictures. He helped me realize that a book proposal is not about your idea or content or your passion. The big idea here is that being successful, a great leader or a great sales person or a great parent or a great volunteer…in order to move people, you need to connect with them emotionally. Get outside of yourself. Figure out what is the emotion you're trying to communicate and what tools can you use to get that across.

“If you can learn to move people emotionally, you can accomplish anything.”

FOR MORE: See his video below

Let's Disrupt This!

We all know that making an emotional connection is everything, yet how often do we forget that? How often do our emails, presentations and reports sanitize who we are out of existence. If undisciplined about that, disrupt yourself now!

Act Fast Then Adjust

INSIGHTS FROM TOP DISRUPTIVE EXPERTS

Asha Dornfest

Co-author, Minimalist Parenting

ParentHacks Blog

MY FAVORITE DISRUPTIVE HERO

My husband, Rael. “Sometimes we learn from people in the very things that they do differently than you do. My way of problem-solving usually involves analyzing the situation, and asking lots of people for advice. When it comes to thinking on my feet, I often struggle. Rael thinks a little bit about something and then act very quickly. He leads with action, and then adjusts. He’s a master of course correction. And this has changed how I approach my life.

“You probably know somebody like this in your life. Who doesn’t seem to be afraid to dip their toe in, or jump in with both feet, and try something — and not worrying too much about messing up or failing, and then learning from that. Having that modeled for me has changed I act as a parent, in my professional life…it’s changed everything.”

MY FAVORITE DISRUPTION

“Childbirth was the first experience that was so intensely physical, that conscious thinking had nothing to do with it. It was the first time I experienced something so massive and important without trying to think it through or control it with mind. That was a really powerful experience!”

Let's Disrupt This!

Asha Dornfest’s lessons are critical for us all. In a disruptive world, you will never be able to catch up with or control everything coming at you.

The only way to thrive when most everything is going to go kaflooey anyway is become masters of course correction. Stop trying to complete your To Do list and start practicing more agility and triaging and resilience!

Author, I Have a Strategy (No You Don't)

Co-Founder, The Insight Labs

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE?

“We are in a perpetual state of disruption. To deny that is anti-Darwinian. We have to go through these disruptions to get smarter, faster, better…to be better iterations of who we were.

“It’s the Picasso who dares to completely obliterate the rules as we know them. Each one of us has a life we are waiting to live. And we all get hung up early on getting a job or a career.

Howell Malham

“Wow, here’s this wonderful disruption that is compelling people to figure out who they are, what they believe. Then once you know that, then you can figure out ‘What is it I am compelled to do instead of sitting around trying to manufacture things to do and calling that a career?' It’s not about feeding a market. It’s about feeding our souls, feeding our nature. It’s a nature we do not know innately.

“Every disruption is a wonderful opportunity to figure out who they are and what they would be doing naturally, biologically. Whether someone is paying you to do it or not.

“It begins with the question, what are you compelled to do?

It’s a really tricky question. Because it’s asking you: what do you believe?”

Let's Disrupt This!

Disrupt your day, your routine. Ask yourself: What do I believe? What truly matters? Am I living what truly matters right now? Everything joyous and wonderful will come from how you answer those questions.

What is Your Legacy?

INSIGHTS FROM TOP DISRUPTIVE EXPERTS

Martha Heller

Author, The CIO Paradox

President, Heller Search Associates

MY FAVORITE DISRUPTIVE CHANGE

“My favorite disruptive change is having children. Ya know, it’s great that I can get guitar instruction on my iPad. That’s fun. It’s not disruptive.

“Until I had children, it was about the here and now. What am I getting done today? Maybe what am I doing tomorrow. And then with children, it was legacy that mattered. It was the future. It’s what is going to happen after I die. It’s the notion that there’s something beyond us, and what we do now matters.

“The literal interpretation of that is: I’ve got to leave something for my kids. But way beyond that is: What is the impact we have here and now on what comes after us. Whether it’s 10 years or 100 years from now.

“On the one hand, this makes me think about space and time in a much more expansive way. But it also me realize that every little minute counts.”

FOR MORE: See her video below

Let's Disrupt This!

Each of us needs to be responsible for disrupting our daily-get-stuff-done thinking and start pondering: What is my legacy? How will I leave the world a better place?

Big questions! And only you can answer them. Disrupt your day, and make time to ponder this. Now.

Are You Thinking BIG Enough?

Jay Papasan

Co-author, The One Thing

Book Site/Blog

MY FAVORITE DISRUPTIVE HERO

“My partner, Gary Keller. Every time I come to him with a goal, he’ll just politely ask the question: But couldn’t you do X. And X is usually some multiple of what I considered doing. When you think bigger, you ask bigger questions. Gary disrupts me on a daily basis by making me think big.”

MY CURRENT DISRUPTIVE CHALLENGE

“Motivating and retaining younger talent. I’m fortunate to employ many young people. It’s been said that they expect to have as many as nine careers in their life. And that’s disruptive to me because as an owner, as a leader, I’m making investments in people to help them grow. And then, every couple of years, that cycle repeats itself as their tendency is to move on. So I’ve got a coach and he’s been holding me accountable to build a better bench, because how you acquire and keep talent has radically changed.”

Can Everyone Change the World?

Jodi Glickman

Author, Great on the Job

Founder, Great on the Job

MY FAVORITE DISRUPTIVE HERO

Clint Sidle, Director of Park Fellows Leadership Program at Cornell. “I got a minimal scholarship to business school that wasn’t going to help me that much. So I called Clint to lobby for my cause. It was one of the moments where one phone call changed the trajectory of my life.

“We spoke for an hour and I told him everything I believed in, everything I wanted to accomplish, why I was right for his program. He called me the next day and offered me a full scholarship to his program. I felt like I won the lottery! Clint jokes that no one before or since has called him and lobbied for what they wanted. The reason he disrupted my life is that he taught me that if you believe in something and you ask for it, you can make it happen. He taught me that anything was possible. You don’t have to let ‘no’ stand in your way.”

MY CURRENT DISRUPTIVE CHALLENGE

“I am an entrerpreneur with a small business with amazing client relationships, with content that, I believe, is best in class and extremely impactful. Now I’m trying to everything to a broader audience. I want to change the world. How do I disrupt my own business and how do I disrupt the market so that everyone has access to the communication training that I provide? Scaling my ideas so they can change the world: That’s what I spend most of my mindshare thinking about right now.”

FOR MORE: See her video below

Let's Disrupt This!

Most everyone I speak with faces this challenge: In today’s world, most everyone CAN change the world. AND it can also really tough to break through the clutter and have your ideas take off as you think they should. Do you have best practices and ideas for this challenge? Please share them!

Blow Past Those Doors!

Whitney Johnson

Author, Dare, Dream, Do

Co-Founder, Rose Parks Advisors

MY FAVORITE DISRUPTIVE HERO

Eunice Kennedy Shriver. “She was the sister of Jack Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy and Teddy Kennedy, and her father said to her that if she had been a man, she might have been a great politician.

“Here’s a woman who had been effectively shut out of the corridors of power, and because of the love she had for her older sister who was mentally retarded, she went to this place where no one is playing. She started the Special Olympics over 50 years ago, and more than 3 million people

have competed. One could arguably say that she had far more political power or leverage than many politicians ever have.

“She’s been an example for me of understanding that sometimes, when those doors of power that I think I need to walk through to get something done are closed, I can always go in the side door, the back door, or build my own door.”

FOR MORE: See her video below

Let's Disrupt This!

Especially at work, too many of us — still — believe that if we just genuflect properly and work 25 hours a day, that the doors of power will pay attention. Bust through those doors! Or go around them! Or ignore them!

Whitney Johnson’s book title didn’t just say Dare, Dream…It ends with Do!

Leadership: Struggle of Values v. Situation

INSIGHTS FROM TOP DISRUPTIVE EXPERTS

Steven Snyder

Author, Leadership and the Art of the Struggle

Founder, Snyder Leadership Group

MY FAVORITE DISRUPTIVE CHANGE

“Joe Badaracco helped me see leadership through an entirely different lens than I ever had. He taught a leadership class at Harvard Business School and instead of using business case studies, the students studied works of literature, such as Death of a Salesman and Things Fall Apart and A Man for All Seasons. Through that study, he came up with a 23-word concept of leadership that was different than I had ever imagined. I realize that this is very, very important:

Leadership is a struggle by flawed human beings to make some important human values real and effective in the world as it is.

I’ve now used this as the basis for my own research into leadership.”

FOR MORE: See his video below

Let's Disrupt This!

I love that that insight recognizes leaders as flawed human beings who need to struggle to make values real in situations that are beyond their control.

Leadership models and lessons are everywhere. From where do you draw yours? (As a Trekker, I often cite Jean-Luc Picard.) If you're not seeing leadership lessons everywhere, disrupt your thinking!

Balance Is the Key

INSIGHTS FROM TOP DISRUPTIVE EXPERTS

Diane Radford

Breast Surgical Oncologist

MY FAVORITE DISRUPTIVE CHANGE

“A lecture I heard when I was a medical student: The role of touch in patient/physician communication. Empathic touch. Reassuring touch. Whether it be holding someone’s hand, squeezing an elbow as a measure of support. That lecture really changed my way of thinking. At our 30-year reunion I had a chance to share what a difference that made in my life.”

MY CURRENT DISRUPTIVE CHALLENGE

“Time management. I’m doing a fellowship in integrative medicine because I have an interest in the wholeness of care. It requires a lot of study and even though I’m really enjoying it, my issue is how to fit everything into a 24-hour day — my busy practice, studying, self-care, continuing to exercise and meditate. The issue of trying to get it all done is something everyone struggles with. One has to find a sense of balance. Balance is the key.”

FOR MORE: See her video below

Let's Disrupt This!

Doctors are just like you: juggling everything every day is tough. But as Dr. Radford shares, balance is key. No matter what daily struggles you have, if you’re not maintaining a balanced approach to juggling it all…disrupt yourself!
