PART 1: MY DISRUPTIVE HEROES
“My favorite heroes do my favorite type of disruption, which is reimagination boundaries. Dr. Seuss created a whole new way of learning that was both fun and educational. Muhammad Yunus started Grameen Bank and won the Nobel Peace Prize for coming up with the concept of micro-lending and showing the world that you can actually combine good business with doing good, and that the two are not mutually exclusive.
“A personal hero for me: I was taking a trans-Atlantic flight and I was struck by this very small but incredibly energetic older woman, 81 years old. We struck up a conversation. She was going to Amsterdam, where she’d get on another plane to Africa, where she’d take a five-hour ride on a horse-cart to get to where she was going.
“When she was 67, when most people think about retirement, she completely changed her focus after having me a boy from Ghana, and she discovered how much help Ghana needed. So for 14 years she made it her life mission, she set up five orphages, she has set up the only healthcare facility that serves 40,000 people, she has set up various farming entities that help people feed themselves, and her charity organization is 100% pass-through — she keeps nothing for herself.
“And when people in companies say to me ‘How do we reimagine boundaries?’ people like that are a complete inspiration. It’s all about your frame of mind. Anyone at any time in their lives or in their business evolution is about to overstep perceived boundaries and reimagine what they do, if they so choose.”

You Cannot Just Yell Booga Booga!

Chris Brogan
Author, The Impact Equation
Founder, Human Business Works
PART 1: ON BEING DISRUPTIVE
“It took me a bunch of different starts and stops to figure out to be the kind of owner I wanted to be…. How I started to by owning my cubicle… How I started after that by owning the vision of what I wanted to get done.
“Disrupting sounds so great, until you realize that if you don’t have any interface to it — if you don’t have any way to make it work — then you’re a homeless person. You’re just a disruptive guy. [Yelling] ‘Booga, booga’ is not that useful if there’s nothing below it.
“I had to learn how to take my business acumen and all my proclivities for making stuff happen, and then still be just as weird. I get that out of my system by being a professional speaker, by being a book author… And, the weirder I get, the more money I make.”
HOW WORK SHOULD WORK
“A human business is: Sustainable, meaning you have to actually make money; It’s relationship-minded, meaning that you actually care about the life of the person you’re doing business with — beyond the product or service you’re trying to sell. The only problem with this advice is that you just can’t fake it. If you’re going to be disruptive and you’re going to take this path, and you just kind of hate people — don’t do it.”

Let's Disrupt This!
One of the core tenets that came from most disruptive heroes is: Question everything, but respect the people. Ultimately, disruption is not about profits or technology or industries. It’s about people.
As you disrupt whatever needs to be, make sure you are truly people-focused. On all ends of the stakeholder spectrum: customers, employees, vendors, communities, and more.

Everyone Must Disrupt, Be Disruptive
Passionately agree or vehemently disagree? Having spent a couple years with 100 great disruptive heroes, one of my findings seems to stir heated emotions on both sides...
The Short Version
No, not by misbehaving.
By innovating: deliberate, designed, intense changes in the status quo.
And if that ain't your cup of tea, then look inward — disrupt yourself.
You need to change you faster, more intensely, to surf the waves of disruption from "out there."
Said Another Way...
The people who will succeed in this era are those who figure out how to benefit from, or take advantage of, continuous disarray, disorder and disruption.
Would you push back on that?
FREE BOOK. Studying 100 disruptive heroes resulted in two new books: Disrupt! Think Epic. Be Epic which is available on Amazon and The Courage Within Us: 7 Essential Character Traits which I'm giving away for FREE now through September. Enjoy!

PART 2: MY FAVORITE DISRUPTIVE CHANGE
“My favorite disruptive change is the power of visualization and the power of affirmational thinking. About 1980, I ran across some information about how that works — the reticular activating system — as you focus on things, it affects your perceptive filters.
“Most of my life got created by writing affirmations and writing out scenes that didn’t exist yet. And I didn’t know how to get there, I just defined what there was. There’s a lot of power in outcome thinking. A lot of the GTD program is about focusing on outcomes. When I wrote Gettings Things Done, the first thing I wrote were the reviews.
“Affirmational thinking can be very powerful. Not in a nah-nah-nu-nu California-esque kind of way. Learning how this works is a very practical tool — how visions and images and scenarios in your mind and imagination directly affect your performance. Basically, I’m living a life of a picture that I painted.”

MY CURRENT DISRUPTIVE CHALLENGE
Dealing with Naysayers. “Disruption is scary for a lot of people. I struggle with this every day.
“People talk about change, and want change, and are very supportive of change. But when you ask them, ‘What is your real view of change?,’ they go: ‘I’m fine. As long as you change, then the world is perfect. You’re the one who needs to change, not me.’
“Part of the whole issue with disruption is getting people comfortable with the fact that change is happening, change is required. The struggle is getting that really great idea out of the lab and turning it into reality. There’s a lot of resistence inside organizations to really embrace and execute and adopt that change.
“I always think this struggle is going to get easier. It never does.”

Let's Disrupt This!
The disruptive era is upon us. Resistence is futile. And yet, somehow, so many people try…and succeed (for a while). We need your help in disrupting this.
Become a champion of disruptive change in whatever way works best for you. With honey instead of vinegar. Or by modeling what adoption and change looks like. But champion, you must!

MY FAVORITE DISRUPTIVE CHANGE
“The disruptive change I’m currently challenged by on a daily basis is my children!
“I think becoming a parent is hard to beat as far as disruptive change. It challenges you and keeps challenging you to show up and be your best, or the best you can. And it’s constantly evolving. Just when you get the hang of babies, then they start walking around. You think ‘OK. I can do that. …Now you’re talking back?!’
“Parenting will always be one of those things where you think ‘Am I really up to this?’ But if you’re not a bit nervous, not a bit challenged, not struggling a bit, then you’re not really going outside of your comfort zone [as your kids need you to].”

In the middle of my corporate workshops I stop all the business lessons long enough for everyone to take a couple minutes to record what really matters in life.
The results are always the same: Family, friends, spirituality, community. Never meetings or emails or doing stupid things that keep the boss happy. Let’s once and for all disrupt what we know doesn’t matter so we have the time and energy for what does!

The Joy of Inner Clarity
INSIGHTS FROM TOP DISRUPTIVE EXPERTS
Join the Disruptive Movement!
David Allen
Author, Getting Things Done
Founder, The David Allen Company
PART 1: THE JOY OF INNER CLARITY
“After I discovered how powerful and exciting and interesting the inner worlds are, I really was not that interested in this world. I kind of wanted to check out. But eating from rice bowls in caves just didn’t seem that attractive to me.
“It turned out that my interest in clear space [a crucial part of Getting Things Done program] had a big tie-in to the spiritual work because the universe is always on. So when you’re doing inner work it’s not like everything shuts down. The goal is to come back to all that with a clear head. The same with my experience in martial arts. The higher levels of training in the martial arts a lot about how you get a clear head so you don’t overreact or underreact to anything. So inner clarity makes it easier to focus on whatever you need to focus on.
“What people do with that clear space is up to them. We’ve worked with rock stars and comedians and writers and CEOs and 12 year-old kids. Clear space works for and is cool for all of them.”
re: "I WISH I COULD DO IT"
“Not being able to do this is just the lack of habits. People saying ‘I know I should, I know it would be good, and I just can’t get myself to do it consistently.’ The methodology I teach is so simple. The challenge for most people is their own habit change.”
FOR MORE: See his video below
Let's Disrupt This!
Mastering disruptions consistently takes two things… 1. An inner clarity, truly knowing where you are going and what you want to achieve. 2. The discipline of creating new habits that will benefit you in a disruptive world. It’s time to finally disrupt an “I wish I could”s that remain inside you!

Massive Opportunities: But For Whom?

MY CURRENT DISRUPTIVE CHALLENGE
Societal Change. “I do see a world that’s going to be much more challenging for people to figure out what type of career they want.
“I don’t know if it means that all of us are going to pull a kumbaya and have a world of Star Trek and everybody does what they want to do and there’s enough to go around… Or if there’s going to be a big chunk of time that’s going to have major, major effects on us as a people.
“I feel like I’m somewhat protected from it because of my entrepreneurial spirit and the kind of work that I do — being among the creative class that Richard Florida has very smartly named — I still worry about the greater community.
“What jobs are we going to have? What is this going to look like. For all my rah-rah-rah on technology, I do wonder: What kind of society are we creating? I think the opportunity is massive to do great in it, but I also do grapple with what’s it going to look like in the short- to mid-term.”
FOR MORE: See his video below
Let's Disrupt This!
If there’s one crucial takeaway from the age of disruption, it’s that the opportunities are massive, but they may not be available to all. As a society, we all have a responsibility to address this. How will you address it? How will you disrupt things and spread the opportunities to all?

Solid Ground Went Bye-Bye
INSIGHTS FROM TOP DISRUPTIVE EXPERTS
Join the Disruptive Movement!
Chris Brogan
Author, The Impact Equation
Founder, Human Business Works
PART 2: ON KEEPING UP WITH DISRUPTIONS
“First, don’t keep up. There’s no race. That’s how lemmings go off cliffs. ‘I’m following this other guy.’ Then you all go off the cliff together.
“With disruption, one of the most important things to realize is that no ground is solid. Nothing is solid. There is no way that the movie industry thought that Blockbuster was going to go away. And they had this plan, and then Netflix came along and crushed it. And then Red Box came along and said ‘You can have your movie right now.’… And then Netflix came back with ‘We’ll do streaming.’ And then Amazon said ‘We’ll do streaming. And we have more customers than you. Ha ha ha.’ And it will be like this until the end of time.
“We just have to hold onto the fact that there will be no solid ground. Here’s what you do instead: You keep thinking only of this… What do I need out of this jungle. What do I really need? [Let’s say that’s] ‘I need to be in contact with more buyers.’ OK, that’s the only thing I’ll be thinking. So whenever I see something new come I’ll ask, ‘Is this going to help be in contact with more buyers?’ Don’t ask, ‘Why are all the kids using it?’ Or ‘Why are all the grown-ups using it?’
“Just ask ‘Does meet the new needs I have?’ And if you don’t have new needs, then just go sit in a box and just wait, and then we’ll put dirt on the box at some point. Once we start getting set in our ways, everything starts to calcify and decay. So we have to look for the new thing. But look from your own compass, not from ‘the world is changing’ compass.”
FOR MORE: See his video below
Let's Disrupt This!
Most everyone I meet wants the answer to the same question: Where’s the solid ground? How do we get back to it? When is this craziness gonna end?
As Chris Brogan points out: That solid ground is gone. If you keep looking for it, you’re just going to waste precious years of your life. Instead, look from your own compass and go where it tells you to go.

MY FAVORITE DISRUPTIVE HERO
Bill Fischer, Professor, Mentor. “Bill lit the flame of my intellectual curiosity. Bill affected how I approach my work — thinking about others, trying to energize others, doing things that are off the beaten path. He’s a non-traditionalist in how he built his career — he always did it his way. From that, I realized I need to do things my way — being myself and bringing myself into every situation.”
MY FAVORITE DISRUPTIVE CHANGE
“My favorite disruptive change was when my family and I moved from Charlottesville, Virgina, to be a professor at IMD [International Institute for Management Development] business school in Lausanne, Switzerland. Taking me, who grew up in New Jersey, and moving there in the early 90s, moving there changed my family and me forever.
“It gave me a much more global perspective and really opened me up to the world. Interacting with executives who came to IMD from all over the world gave me exposure to immense points of views and all sorts of different perspectives. That experience fundamentally changed my view of things.”
