MY FAVORITE DISRUPTIVE HERO

“When I was 26 years old, I move to Tokyo. Almost exactly at the same time, Chad Rowan moved there from Hawaii. He became the first foreign-born Grand Champion sumo wrestler in Japan. He took the name Akebono.

“He was unbelievably disruptive. Can you imagine there’s this American who’s the number one sumo wrestler in the Japanese national sport? I had the pleasure of meeting him several different times.

“That taught me that, if he could become the best in someone else’s national sport, I could do anything. An extremely valuable thing to realize.”

Social Media: Seeing the Path Through the Forest

MY DISRUPTIVE CHALLENGE

Social Media. “It’s a bear to deal with. It’s a huge commitment of time to build followers. It can be very entertaining, It’s fun to throw out a clever line here or there, or share an interesting link with people. But to be successful at it, you need to be present all the time.

“I also wonder if it’s a generational thing. If you’re old than, say, 35 — I think we were all brought up with a certain degree of privacy. My parents wouldn’t even say cancer out loud. They would say ‘Somebody has the big C.’ And now everybody is expected to share the most intimate details of their lives.

“It’s the biggest adjust of the decade — figuring out how does it fit into your private life, your professional life? How do you decide what to keep for yourself, what to process in a different way?”

The challenge for all of us: “It’s very easy to say what was hot last week. It’s very hard to say what will be hot next week, and what’s going to be useful. The great entrepreneurs can see that path through the forest and they don’t allow themselves to be easily distracted by all the trees!”

Disruption is a Two-Way Street!

Chuck Wall

MY DISRUPTIVE CHALLENGE

Big Data. “I’ve started seven companies in my career and two of them were data companies. So I understand the power behind collecting all that data. But just because you can do it doesn’t mean you should. My fear is that companies are becoming so enmeshed in the collection of data, that they lose all the insight that they should be drawing from it.

“The key thing to focus on is interpretation. You can have this mountain of information, but it’s how you interpret it that will help you build a better business, ultimately serving your customers better.”

Customers Can Use Big Data to Push Back “Now, once all that information is out there — anything that you desire, you can send RFPs (Request for Proposal) to companies and say, ‘I’m not going to play by your rules. Here are my rules: Here’s the color I want, the date I want to receive it. Here’s the price-point I’m willing to pay. Have your proposal back to me and I’ll decide what to do.

“When more and more customers start doing that, companies will go, ‘Dang, they figured it out!’”

Standing Out Above the Noise

INSIGHTS FROM TOP DISRUPTIVE EXPERTS

Join the Disruptive Movement!

Sanjay Sanghoee

Author, Killing Wall Street

Blog

MY DISRUPTIVE CHALLENGE

A Lack of Structure in Our Society. “Technology has made the world a much more democratic place, but it’s also created so much noise and intense competition for every resource — including our attention, our dollars — that more and more people are going to struggle to be heard over that noise… And to be able to show what’s so special about them.

“A billion people now have the ability to present their talents to the world. It’s a very double-edged sword.

“A disruptive challenge that I feel myself struggling with is: How do you get heard above the noise? How do you compete with so much content out there, so many perspectives? A lot of which are, frankly, not that good, but they do have airtime. You have to figure a way to market yourself without compromising your integrity or perspectives.”

FOR MORE: See his video below

Let's Disrupt This!

Here’s a best-selling author, an ex news anchor, a contributor to Huffington Post and Fortune — and even he finds it hard to stand out among the noise!

There are many possible solutions, which we explore in this blog, but Sanghoee’s closing thought is the foundation upon which you must build — authenticity. Your point of view must be unique to YOU!

Everything must revolve around integrity of your voice, your personal brand. That’s what makes viral-ness stand the test of time.

Monster Fear: Going Outside Your Comfort Zone

INSIGHTS FROM TOP DISRUPTIVE EXPERTS

Join the Disruptive Movement!

Jackie Huba

Author, Monster Loyalty

Blog

MY DISRUPTIVE CHALLENGE

Fear of Going Outside My Space. “What’s next for me? I just had a book come out — I’ve got the wheel’s turning, but what’s next might not be a business book. And that’s what I’ve been doing for years.

“But I have this idea that’s so out there… And there’s this fear: Am I going outside my space? Should I move to this new thing? Will it be successful? Or not? I’m struggling with: Should I go outside of this thing that I know. Maybe it will be bigger than anything I’ve ever done. Or maybe it will be a giant failure. I don’t know.

“I think we have to get over the fear, but that fear is a very natural thing. There is some validity to keeping your day job and working as much as you can on that other thing. Which is what I’m doing right now.

“The great thing about social media is it’s set up to try things. That’s my idea for how I’ll proceed: Do some research, put something together and publish it on my blog, and then see what kind of reaction I get.”

FOR MORE: See his video below

Let's Disrupt This!

That fear is real for all of us: Going outside our comfort zone. We know that what got us here won’t get us there. But what to do about that? As Jackie Huba describes, going outside your space can happen one small step at a time. Experiment. Try things out. Abandon what doesn’t work and keep tweaking what does. One small step at a time.

True Parental Filters

INSIGHTS FROM TOP DISRUPTIVE EXPERTS

Join the Disruptive Movement!

Cory Doctorow

Author, Little Brother

Craphound Blog

PART 3: TRUE PARENTAL FILTERS

After sharing his struggles with disruptive changes in advertising and data collection, Cory Doctorow then reflected on how that translates to his role as a dad…

“Having a kid who can pilot a tablet and cruise around YouTube (at a very early age) has shown me that what parents worry about, in terms of parental filters, is almost entirely misplaced.

“When my daughter was pre-literate, after watching Dora the Explorer that I had set up for her on the tablet, she would click on related videos like Dora in Spanish and then French and then Russian and Portuguese... And then clicked on the kind of thing you would expect parental filters to pick up. She found Dora the Explorer with someone shouting curse words over the top of it, pornographic, ultra-violent dialogue. And her reaction was total indifference. She’d simply bring the tablet to me and say ‘Daddy, fix it.’ Never any lasting effect on her from hearing naughty words.

“Then one day she’s watching a four year-old narrating her Barbie collection. ‘This is my Barbie X, and my mommy and daddy gave to me because they love me very much. And this is my Barbie Y…’ It was like a cobra and a mongoose — total fascination! It was the only time I couldn’t get her to give her back the tablet.

“Finally, I was able to explain that we don’t watch adverts in our house. And she said ‘OK.’ But for weeks later she would turn to me and say ‘Daddy, do you remember when I was looking at the tablet, and there were those dolls…Can we go get those dolls?’

“There is no parental filter in existence that filters out Barbie ads. But of all the things that my kid has spuriously seen on the Internet, the only one that has caused friction around our household and has warper her mind, is the Barbie ad.

“When we talk about parental filters, we’re not talking about the things that cause problems for adults.”

FOR MORE: See his video below

Let's Disrupt This!

Doctorow’s points, expanded for all of us for all things: 1. Good parental will always matter. Technology will never substitute for passing on one’s moral compass to the next generation. 2. Critical thinking will always matter, at every age.

Every day is a constant challenge about what to filter out and what to focus on. And the best tools for that is not technology, but our mind and our values and our experiences.

What to Do: Devices Are Acting on Our Behalf

INSIGHTS FROM TOP DISRUPTIVE EXPERTS

Daina Middleton

Author, Marketing in the Participation Age

Blog

MY DISRUPTIVE CHALLENGE

Devices Acting on Behalf of Humans. “The beginning of the Participation Age was us having expectations about how we interact with other people. Now, all our devices have sensors embedded in them are actually starting to participate on our behalf.

“The big challenge in that is how we incorporate that data and information into a much more complex marketing ecosystem. Because we’re not just interacting with humans, we’re interacting with devices acting on our behalf.

“That’s where everything is going in the next phase of the Participation Age.”

FOR MORE: See her video below

Let's Disrupt This!

We cannot stop this trend. However we can do better when we participate with it.

As consumers, we can participate more robustly with those services that “get” us, and we can shut down or ignore those that don’t.

As providers of services, we need to dig deeper into the early messages those devices send us, listening more carefully for the human voice they only partially represent.

And as individuals, we must embrace that, more and more, our digital footprint is our footprint… And we must manage that as carefully as we would any other “real” part of who we are.
