How to Find The Best Plastic Surgeon to Fix Your Acne Scars?

If you have severe scarring and are looking for a skilled plastic surgeon to assist you with scar revision, but you’re unsure where to start, then keep reading. When you search online, you’ll find numerous surgeons advertising their services, all claiming to be good. However, you may also come across stories in online forms of doctors who have made scars worse. Keep reading and I will share my experience on how I was able to find a good plastic surgeon in my area for an affordable price to help me with my scars.

Start by searching Google, Yelp, and relevant websites in your area. If there are no suitable options nearby, expand your search area. Research online to be knowledgeable about your condition to avoid relying solely on a doctor’s recommendations. Look for reviews and testimonials online to identify reputable doctors who specialize in your issue. Narrow down your choices and schedule appointments with the top few doctors to ask detailed questions and assess their confidence in solving your issues.

This method can be applied when searching for any type of doctor or specialist, not just for acne scarring. Whether you’re looking for a breast augmentation specialist, a dentist, or any other healthcare professional, this approach can help you find the right doctor to help. Please note that this is based on my personal experience, and I’m not providing any medical advice. The goal is to assist you in finding a competent doctor who specializes in your concern.

It’s important to be aware that some surgeons advertise procedures they don’t actually perform or lack confidence in performing. They may include these procedures on their website to enhance their credentials and attract more customers to their clinic. Remember that doctors provide services for a fee, so it’s crucial to find a reliable one who genuinely aims to help you. By conducting thorough research, reading reviews, and asking questions during in-person consultations, you can make an informed and educated decision and find a doctor who is competent and trustworthy.

The reason I am writing this article is because I had a bad experience when I was 18 with a doctor. I trusted a doctor who didn’t know what they were doing, and as a result, I ended up with a permanent scar that greatly affected me and caused depression for a while. Looking back, it seems like that doctor either lacked the necessary skills or only cared about making more money. I want to share my story to raise awareness and help others avoid similar experiences because doctors are highly respected and it is easy to fall for their trap.

Let’s go back in time to an experience that made me more cautious about trusting any doctor. I was 18 years old when I went for a regular checkup with my doctor. During my appointment, the doctor noticed a lump on my nose and recommended its removal. I mentioned to him that I was taking Accutane, a medication known to increase the risk of scarring, and I expressed my concerns about moving forward.

It should have been common knowledge for any responsible doctor to understand that Accutane can make a person prone to scarring and advise against any skin-related procedures. However, he disregarded my worries, insisting that he was a doctor and that I should trust him. This raised my suspicions, as he was a general doctor claiming to also perform skin care procedures.

Despite my doubts, I decided to trust his judgment, which unfortunately turned out to be a horrible mistake. The outcome was devastating, as he left a large, dented crater scar in the middle of my nose, causing me to feel depressed for quite some time.

To seek help, I visited other plastic surgeons in the area, showing them my scarred face. They were shocked by what they saw and couldn’t believe that the bad doctor had proceeded with the procedure despite my Accutane use. They expressed a desire to identify the doctor and report the incident, but being young and depressed, I didn’t have the strength to pursue reporting him. The new doctors advised me to wait for a year and return once my scar had further healed.

Fortunately, as time went by, the scar on my nose gradually healed and become less noticeable. However, it left behind a noticeable depression where the smaller lump used to be. This experience taught me a valuable lesson about being extremely cautious when considering any significant medical procedure. It made me realize that choosing the right doctor is crucial in any procedure.

Over time, I learned to accept and live with the ugly scars on my nose. However, as new technologies and advancements emerged, I became hopeful that I could finally have them removed. I had been eyeing a plastic surgeon in my area for quite some time. His Yelp page boasted a flawless five-star rating with hundreds of good reviews. The anticipation grew as I looked forward to meeting him, hoping that he would be able to help me achieve my long-desired goal of removing my scars permanently.

Does Insurance Cover Scar Revision?

In general, most insurance policies do not provide coverage for cosmetic procedures. Cosmetic procedures are not considered a medical necessity, individuals seeking cosmetic treatments are usually responsible for covering the associated costs out of pocket. It’s essential to review your insurance policy and consult with your insurance provider.

I was hopeful that insurance would cover the revision cost of my scars as the consultation fee alone with this flawless five-star Yelp surgeon amounted to a whopping $175. Furthermore, the wait time just to see him was a few months. Although this fee was three to four times higher compared to other clinics, I didn’t mind, because my priority was to invest in the best surgeon available for my scar revision.

My meeting with the plastic surgeon turned out to be disappointing. Despite claiming expertise in skincare on his website, he seems to lack knowledge in the field. I discovered that they even advertised a procedure on their website that they didn’t actually perform. This realization made me question the integrity of these surgeons, as it seemed they were solely focused on making money and used false advertising for personal gains. During our brief 10-minute meeting, he appeared annoyed by my questions and hurriedly rushed me out, which only added to the frustration.

Interestingly, he did refer me to another doctor who could perform the procedure. However, it seemed unnecessary to pay $175 for a simple referral when I could have found the doctor on my own without wasting my time and money. This experience motivated me to write this article, aiming to help others save their money and avoid falling for the hype created by online reviews.

I’ve often wondered how some clinics manage to receive positive reviews while providing subpar service. It’s possible they ask friends to leave positive reviews or are skilled at gaming the system. Additionally, positive reviews may be for other procedures they excel at, while lacking expertise in the specific area you’re seeking help with.

Do Surgeons Lack Empathy?

While some surgeons may lack empathy, it depends on the individual, and not everyone can be stereotyped based on their profession. The doctor I was referred to did show a lack of empathy he still did a decent job of removing some of my scars. He specialized in subcision, and he didn’t seem to listen or care much about my concerns and rushed through appointments.

Additionally, his staff kept forgetting to provide me with proper aftercare instructions, which is a crucial aspect of the process. It made me realize the importance of receiving accurate aftercare instructions, as the healing of scars doesn’t stop when you leave the clinic. Taking care of your skin at home is vital to prevent further scarring and promote optimal scar healing.

A lot of time I had to go home and research the aftercare instruction online on my own. I also learned the significance of the staff in the process. They play an essential role, and it’s crucial to have a competent and caring staff that can provide you with the necessary support and guidance.

The doctor who specialized in subcision overall didn’t deliver great results. The subcision procedure only worked for some of my scars and didn’t have any effect on the prominent deep dent on my nose, which was the most noticeable. I expressed my concerns to the doctor’s staff over the phone and wanted to explore other procedures advertised on their site, but they instructed me to discuss them directly with the doctor. However, when I brought up the idea during my appointment, he seemed irritated and rushed through the procedure and even worsening some of my scars in the process. After that experience, I decided never to return to him again.

If you find this article interesting and helpful in providing the information you’re seeking, then keep reading as the most valuable part is yet to come.

I started to lose hope once again in finding a solution for the prominent scars on my nose and also found out from online research the nose is one of the hardest parts to fix for scarring. However, I remained determined and even went to extremes, and searched for the best doctors worldwide. I even looked into plastic surgeons in Korea, as they are renowned for their expertise in plastic surgery, but I couldn’t find much information about scar treatment. It made me realize just how challenging it is to find a skilled scar surgeon, and even more so than finding a plastic surgeon for facial and body contouring.

During my continued search for a solution, I came across a surgeon in Australia who claimed to specialize in treating facial scarring. He had a strong online presence, constantly discussing the topic with many followers. Another doctor I came across boasted about working with celebrities in Hollywood’s upscale neighborhoods, charging high prices.

Despite the buzz surrounding them, I found it puzzling that both doctors had received only three-star ratings on Yelp, with several reviewers expressing that their scars had worsened after their treatment. This raised concerns and made me hesitant to pursue treatment. I realized it was perplexing how doctors claiming expertise in scar treatment had such low reviews and many complain in the comments section.

During my search, I discovered a helpful hack on Yelp. By utilizing the comment section, I could search for keywords related to my issue, such as “scars” or “scarring.” This allowed me to find reviews and information specifically about the surgeon’s expertise in that area. It was also valuable to read through negative reviews, especially those mentioning the surgeon making the scars worse. Whenever I came across such comments, I would move on and find another doctor.

Using the keyword search in Yelp’s comment section enabled me to assess the number of people a surgeon had worked on for a particular procedure and the results obtained. It helped me determine if the negative reviews were relevant to the specific procedure. This technique proved beneficial in finding my next surgeon.

However, there was a drawback with this doctor—he was relatively new. During my visit, he lacked confidence in treating my nose scar, stating that it was a complex case and attempting to address it might worsen it. Unfortunately, this meant I had wasted more money and time on consultations.

This experience led me to another tip: researching a doctor’s name online and determining how long they have been practicing and what school they graduated from. Always avoid going to a spa for these kinds of procedures and go to a real doctor. If they are too new in the field, they might lack the necessary experience and skills to handle complex cases.

Does Your Doctor’s Age Matter?

It’s important to consider the age of a doctor when choosing one, as both being too young and inexperienced or too old and potentially less sharp can pose dangerous risks. I had a bad experience with our family doctor misdiagnosing my mom. She was nearing retirement, and her diagnostic abilities had declined greatly.

Unfortunately, one month later, we discovered that my mom was misdiagnosed with something minor that turn out to be cancer. If she had been correctly diagnosed earlier, she would have had more time to spend with us. This situation emphasized the significance of finding a doctor who is in the right range—not too young and inexperienced, but also not too old and potentially less mentally sharp.

The last doctor I found and the one I am currently using turned out to be a good surgeon. His website showcased his specialization in scar treatment, and he received high ratings and positive reviews. By using the keyword search in Yelp comments, I discovered that he had performed numerous successful scar procedures. Although he had a few negative reviews related to billing issues, I considered this a minor concern compared to his ability as a surgeon. It seemed like the billing issues were staff-related and not a reflection of his skill.

Why is Staff Important in Healthcare?

Staff members are an essential part of healthcare because they often provide aftercare instructions and follow-up support to ensure that patients remember to perform crucial tasks. Additionally, they are responsible for administering medications and handling related matters, as surgeons can become exceptionally busy and may forget about individual patients.

It’s important to note that the staff in a doctor’s clinic may change over time, so it’s crucial to do your own research and take charge of your healthcare. In my case, some of his staff made minor billing mistakes, but it wasn’t intentional. Despite having a long wait time of 3-4 months for a consultation, the doctor’s pricing was fair, which indicated that he cared about his patients and didn’t overcharge them. During my appointment, I asked him and his staff numerous questions, and while his staff seemed unsure, he confidently answered all of them, although he did appear slightly annoyed by the extent of my inquiries.

I decided to proceed with the procedure based on the information he provided, but I also conducted further research on my own. The procedure itself went smoothly, but as expected, the aftercare instructions provided by his staff were not clear. Thankfully, I had already researched and familiarized myself with the necessary aftercare procedures. It’s important to remember that doctors are busy individuals and may not remember everything or have sufficient time for individual patients.

Therefore, it’s crucial to take responsibility for your own healthcare, especially during the post-procedure period. This article serves as a reminder that to achieve good results, it’s essential to put in your own effort and conduct research. By being proactive and advocating for yourself, you increase the success of the outcome.

Conclusion

Currently, the large dented scar on my nose is barely noticeable. I continue to work with my surgeon, and I am pleased with the progress. I hope that sharing my personal experience will assist you in finding a good doctor for your own needs and that the tips provided can help you narrow down the best possible surgeon for any situation. It’s crucial to approach any procedure with caution, as it has the potential to either improve or worsen your situation. If you’re interested in learning more about scarring and the other procedures I used to address my own scarring, you can read it here.

Can a Plastic Surgeon Get Rid of Acne Scars?

In general, most plastic surgeons also specialize in scar revision. If you visit their websites, you will most likely find a dedicated section on scar revision. However, it’s important to note that some surgeons may focus solely on body contouring procedures, so it’s advisable to check their website to see if they offer scar revision. By reviewing their website, you can determine if they have the expertise and experience in treating your scars.

Can Retinol Remove Acne Scars?

Retinol has been known to help reduce and fade scars, but it cannot completely eliminate scars. Retinol works by promoting skin cell turnover and collagen production, which can help minimize the visibility of scars. However, it is crucial to have realistic expectations and understand that the complete removal of scars is not possible with Retinol.

How to Remove Different Types of Acne Scars on The Face?

Dealing with ugly scars can often lead to feelings of depression, as many people believe they are stuck with these reminders forever. However, they’re some good news for you. By the end of this article, you’ll discover that you can fade or reduce the scars tremendously.

To effectively remove different types of acne scars on the face, a combination of procedures and treatments is typically recommended. It is important to understand that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to the problem, as each individual’s skin varies in terms of texture and tone. The key approach to addressing different types of acne scars is to combine different procedures that are specifically suited to the type of scars. By tailoring the treatment plan to the specific needs of the individual, you can achieve optimal results.

You have probably tried various methods and spent a lot of time researching how to deal with scars. I understand the frustration, which is why reading about my personal experience can offer you valuable insights. By sharing my journey, I hope to save you time and money, while also providing you with a road map towards achieving your goal of having more flawless skin.

If you’re someone who has struggled with a multitude of scars on your face, particularly from acne, I understand the frustration. Acne is an unwelcome part of life, and while we can’t prevent it entirely, we can improve the scars from it. Sadly, there’s little information available on scars, and most surgeons you come across primarily focus on plastic surgery. I’ve been there and researched for many hours to find ways to address my own scars, and although they’re not perfect, they have improved.

It’s disheartening to find generic online resources about scars that lack real personal experiences. It often feels like the authors haven’t personally dealt with scars and are simply rewriting the information they gathered from doctors or other online sources. But there’s more to it than just visiting a doctor and expecting flawless skin right after. I’ve learned the hard way that finding a good doctor is crucial since the wrong one can actually worsen your scars because not all doctors are created equal.

Through discussions with numerous surgeons and dermatologists, I’ve learned that scar treatment appears to be more difficult and complex than plastic surgery. Multiple surgeons have turned me down, concerned that the scars could potentially worsen or become larger.

I have gathered a list of methods I have personally tried to treat my scars. It’s important to remember that everyone’s skin is different, so it’s crucial to do your own research and consult with a qualified professional who specializes in scar treatment. Each person is unique, and what worked for me may not yield the same results for you, especially if you have a different skin type or complexion.

1. Home Micro-Needling

At the top of the list is a procedure that has proven highly effective in removing scars, and the best part is it can be safely performed at home. However, it’s important to note that this home procedure carries some risks if not done correctly. Before attempting it, make sure to thoroughly read all instructions to minimize the possibility of worsening your scars by applying excessive pressure or going too deep. It is recommended to repeat this procedure every two weeks and follow up by applying a scar cream to further improve the results.

The Banisher 2.0 is the micro-needling tool I personally use and highly recommend for at-home micro-needling. It is affordable and can be used up to 10 times before needing to purchase new needles. I have experienced the remarkable fading of one of my scars to the point where I have trouble finding it. That’s why it holds the top spot on my list and the risk is minimal.

You can expect the most improvements in areas that are firmer and less pliable. The forehead tends to yield the best results since it has a harder and firm surface. Additionally, the sides of the face, away from the cheek area and closer to the ear, also tend to show good improvements.

The cheek area might pose the most challenges and show the least response when using this method. This is because it tends to have a higher concentration of fat tissue and it also has more curves. When you apply pressure to your face, the presence of this fat makes it difficult for the needles to make an imprint and effectively scratch the surface of the face. Flatter areas also work better because you can press the needle straight down.

Remember, the key to improving your scars lies in creating small scratches on the surface. By doing so, you stimulate the growth of new skin that gradually replaces the old scars, leading to the scars fading over time. Overall I was very happy with the result and the cost was low as buying a new micro-needling pen every few months wasn’t bad at all in pricing.

2. Fractional Laser

This laser treatment holds the number two spot on my personal list due to its exceptional ability to tackle scars that are notoriously difficult to remove, especially on the nose. I personally had a few crater-like scars on my own nose, and they posed quite a challenge to get rid of. The nose is the most challenging part of the face to fix for scars as a few doctors turn me away and most of the other procedures I tried had no effect on it. However, after undergoing six laser sessions, I am thrilled to report that these scars have become barely visible.

While I could be content with the current results, I am considering a couple more sessions to potentially further improve the scars. The overall cost of this procedure, including the use of pricey face pads to address hyper-pigmentation if you have tanned skin amounted to approximately $500. Finding a good doctor who is experienced in performing this procedure on your specific skin type is of utmost importance. In my case, as someone with Asian tan skin, it was crucial to ensure the compatibility of this treatment.

When searching for a surgeon, it is worth noting that relying solely on Yelp reviews can be misleading. It is advisable to thoroughly read both positive and negative reviews, paying particular attention to feedback related to scarring. This will help you ensure that the surgeon specializes in scar treatment.

Additionally, please keep in mind that this particular procedure may not yield optimal results for individuals with African skin, so consulting with a doctor beforehand is highly recommended.

The downside I discovered with this procedure is that it can be quite painful and you will most likely need numbing in the area being performed. Additionally, during the recovery process, you will need to avoid showing your face in public for about two weeks. This is because the scars will form crusts and gradually peel off, which may not be very appealing to look at.

Another important factor to consider is that this procedure can be among the more expensive options, depending on the depth of your scars. Achieving the desired results may require undergoing up to eight procedures or even more.

3. Subcision

Subcision is my choice for the number three spot because I personally experienced a significant improvement after my first subcision session. This procedure is highly effective for treating tethered scars that are depressed and held down by underlying scar tissue. Each session of subcision cost me around $500, and I underwent a total of five sessions. However, I must mention that I had a negative experience with the doctor who performed my procedure. Unfortunately, he was too aggressive in treating my face, which resulted in a few scars worsening instead of improving.

That is why I always try to remind the people reading this article to always find the best doctor they can afford as a bad doctor can make things worst not better. From my experience, a good doctor will never overcharge the patient because they actually care about the patient enough to give them a fair price. The procedure itself is quick and you will immediately notice your scars popping up once it’s completed. However, it’s important to note that sometimes the scars can become depressed again after just a few days.

Overall the result was positive I saw noticeable improvements with this procedure. However, it’s worth mentioning that subcision has some limitations and is not suitable for treating pinhole scars. In some cases, this procedure may even worsen certain scars. Nevertheless, if you have deep tethered scars, subcision may be one of the few treatments available. It’s important to recognize that combining different procedures is often the best approach, as no single procedure can address all types of scars.

4. TCA Cross

This procedure can be affordable and cost-effective if you can purchase TCA acid on platforms like Amazon and perform it yourself at home. Personally, I was able to save a significant amount of money by doing so. However, if you choose to visit a doctor, the cost may be around $400. Please note that these prices are specific to the San Francisco Bay area and are accurate as of 2023.

I would strongly recommend getting the TCA Cross procedure done at a doctor’s office or a reputable spa. Working with acid can be very dangerous, especially if you accidentally get it on your eyes. Incorrect application or lack of knowledge about proper aftercare can potentially worsen the scars. Therefore, it’s crucial to seek professional guidance to ensure safety and achieve optimal results.

TCA cross is one of the most effective procedures for treating pinhole scarring. If you have numerous small pinhole scars, this procedure can greatly seal them up slowly by making them more shallow and you help in addressing this concern.

In my personal experience, I found it effective to perform TCA cross every two months or longer, or as advised by your doctor. With each session, the pinhole scars gradually become shallower until they reach your desired research. This approach allows for progressive improvement over time and has very little downtime. The little pinhole scars will scab after a few days and will fall off a week after the procedure. You can most likely still go out in public if the pinhole is small as people will have to really get close to you to look to see it and it will appear like a little blackhead.

To optimize results, I recommend avoiding showering or washing your face for two days after performing the TCA cross procedure. This helps prevent the scabs from falling off prematurely, as keeping them on longer tends to yield better outcomes. Additionally, before going to bed, you can apply Mederma on your face to keep the scabs moist, further enhancing scar improvement.

5. Differin Gel

This gel is highly effective in removing dead skin cells from the face and addressing issues like sun damage, light scarring, and other acne problems. While it is a valuable product, it is important to note that its impact is limited, after-all a cream can only do so much. Differin Creams and gels can help fade mild scars and are an affordable option. I highly recommend keeping some at home to assist with mild and surface-level scarring.

Differin Gel is also my go-to treatment for dealing with breakout and it also helps with improving texture. If you want to learn more about dealing with acne then read my article about how I deal with acne right here.

How Do You Get Rid of Stubborn Acne Scars on Your Face?

Based on my personal experience and the feedback I received from several surgeons, I want to highlight that scars located in the middle of the nose can be particularly challenging to fix. In my case, I had a wide and deep crater scar right near the middle of the nose, which made it one of the most difficult scars to deal with and extremely noticeable. Interestingly, three out of four of the surgeons I consulted didn’t express much confidence in treating this specific type of scar. They emphasized that the skin on the nose doesn’t heal in the same way as the rest of the face, making it more complex to treat.

Why Are Acne Scars So Hard to Get Rid Of?

I’ve found that scars are generally difficult to eliminate completely. Interestingly, most plastic surgeons I consulted, who also specialize in scar revision and plastic surgery, seemed more confident in performing procedures to enhance a person’s overall appearance rather than focusing solely on scar treatment. Even my current doctor, whom I consider to be skilled in scar revision, has mentioned that the techniques for scar revision are not yet perfected and require time to achieve optimal results.

Conclusion

Hopefully, these tips prove helpful in your journey to treat your scars, as information on scarring can be scarce. From my discussions with surgeons and personal experiences, I’ve learned that scar treatments require time and patience, and they are not perfect. It’s important to mix and match different procedures with the guidance of a skilled surgeon, as there is no one-size-fits-all. Each procedure may have varying effects and limitations, so careful experimentation is necessary to find what works best.

Additionally, conducting your own research is crucial, as even a good surgeon may not have the time to provide all the necessary details for aftercare. Remember, it’s your face, and you’re the only person that should watch out for your own skin and not leave it in the hand of another person.

10 Ways to Erase Pimples and End Your Acne Struggle

I’ve battled with acne since elementary school when I was teased by kids who called me “pimple face.” Even now, at 37, I continue to struggle with acne here and there. However, over the years, I’ve learned and tried numerous methods, leading to significant improvements in my acne skin.

The reason I am writing this is to share my personal experience with people who struggle, as I have, in the hopes of helping them erase their pimple skin for good. I’ll share my tried-and-tested acne treatments, ranking them from best to worst, and provide my opinion on the most effective long-term solution to finally put an end to your acne. Read on, and I assure you that my personal experience might be helpful to you.

I am not a doctor, so before you try any of these methods, please do your own research and consult with a specialized doctor in this field to avoid any negative reactions. I have Southeast Asian skin, which tends to be tanned and thicker. Additionally, I have oily skin, especially in the T-zone. Everything written in this blog is purely based on my own research and personal experience, also keep in mind everyone’s skin and body work differently so what works for me can have a negative side effect on others.

1. Diet

Changing my diet turned out to be the best solution for my pimple face. I used to hear people say that food can cause acne, but I didn’t understand why until I delved deeper. Your skin, being the largest organ in your body, reflects what toxin you consume. When you eat unhealthy or toxic food, it can manifest on your skin through your pores causing acne. For instance, cows injected with growth hormones can disrupt your hormones when you consume their milk.

This, in turn, increases sebum production, making your skin oilier and more prone to pore-clogging bacteria and dirt that cause pimples. I also found that cutting down on sugar is important because it spikes insulin levels and disrupts hormones, resulting in increased sebum production and more acne. To combat this, I recommend sticking to a clean diet rich in vegetables, meat, and grains. Diet in my opinion is the most important and natural way to erase acne.

Sticking to natural methods is always better than using unnatural methods because the latter can have side effects that may lead to regret later on. Moreover, maintaining a clean diet is not only cheaper than buying numerous skincare products and medicines for acne, but it also promotes overall health, benefiting both your skin and your well-being.

2. Adapalene – Differin Gel

This particular gel is a fantastic option for acne treatment as it offers exfoliating properties that help remove dead skin cells and clear pore blockages. It also accelerates the skin’s turnover rate, aiding in the prevention of clogged pores and pimple breakouts. The reason I ranked this gel as number two on my list is not only because of its effectiveness in treating acne but also because it is less abrasive on the skin compared to other products I will mention later on.

While it is essential to note that this gel can increase sensitivity to sunlight, it is still significantly gentler on the skin than other options. In my personal experience, this product has proven to be just as effective as Benzoyl Peroxide in combating acne, but without harsh side effects like dry skin redness. You will have dry skin and some redness but it is a lot more mild compare to Benzoyl Peroxide.

If you haven’t come across this product before, I highly recommend giving it a try. Its ability to unclog pores and remove dead skin cells adds to its overall effectiveness in achieving clearer skin, and let’s not forget it helps also with wrinkle lines.

3. Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser

Benzoyl Peroxide is highly effective in treating acne, and I have personally relied on this product for many years. However, I was worried that it can contribute to skin aging due to its drying effects. As a result, I recommend switching to a milder alternative, such as a Benzoyl Peroxide cleanser that only remains on the skin for a short period.

Opting for the lowest percentage available is recommended since its primary function is to eliminate acne-causing bacteria, and you can simply rinse it off afterward. It is best to avoid higher percentages, like 10%, and instead find a 2.5% formulation. By applying it to your face for a brief duration, such as the two minutes it takes to brush your teeth, you can reap the benefits of acne-fighting properties while minimizing negative side effects like dryness, redness, and increased sun sensitivity.

If you start feeling a burning sensation on your face and find it unbearable, it’s a sign that you should wash it off even sooner. Let your body tell you how long you should leave it on. This cleanser also works great on the body to remove body acne but you might not feel any burning sensation as the body has a thicker layer of skin compared to the face.

I learned this lesson the hard way when I used to play basketball and inadvertently left it on my face, resulting in severe sunburn. It took approximately a year of sun avoidance for my skin to fully recover. This is why I have ranked this product as number three, as I am confident in its acne-fighting abilities, but the new approach of leaving it on and rinsing it off significantly reduces the potential side effects of prolonged usage.

4. Benzoyl Peroxide – Micronized BPO Version

Benzoyl Peroxide has gained widespread recognition for its effectiveness in treating acne by eliminating the bacteria responsible for breakouts and increasing skin cell turnover. However, while this ingredient is highly regarded for its acne-fighting properties, many have expressed concerns about its potential side effects. One common issue is the drying effect it can have on the skin, coupled with increased sensitivity to sunlight even when used only at nighttime.

Fortunately, a newer and improved version of Benzoyl Peroxide, known as Micronized Benzoyl Peroxide, offers a gentler approach. If you’re currently using the older version, it may be worthwhile to consider upgrading to this milder alternative that is more accommodating to your skin.

It is worth mentioning that one drawback I personally experienced with this newer version is the tendency for it to leave a noticeable white residue as it dries. This may be attributed to either my tendency to over-apply the product to ensure comprehensive coverage. Nonetheless, I found that lightly wiping off the residue after it dries still allowed the product to effectively combat acne while minimizing the marks. Alternatively, exploring different versions or formulations of Micronized Benzoyl Peroxide may lead to the discovery of a product that does not leave a white residue upon drying.

5. Benzoyl Peroxide – Original Version

After trying various acne treatment products, I discovered one that stood out due to its efficacy and remarkable results. However, it’s important to note that the original version of this product is harsher on the skin compared to the newer Micronized version. While the original version effectively prevents acne, it presented a significant drawback for me when exposed to sunlight—I experienced sun sensitivity. Recognizing the potential side-effect on my skin, I began exploring alternative options that were less abrasive.

For people yet to discover this newer version and still using the original version please switch now. This upgraded Micronized version maintains the product’s effectiveness while minimizing the adverse effects on the skin. One positive that the original version has over the newer version is that it slides on smoother with no white mark after it dries even if I applied a lot. The newer version might possibly have a new ingredient added which makes it thicker causing it to be not as smooth.

6. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has gained popularity as a beneficial internal remedy and an external solution for the skin. It can be used for acne treatment as a spray; however, it is important to dilute it due to its strong concentration. Online resources can guide you in finding the appropriate dilution ratio based on your skin needs.

Personally, I found it to be effective for body acne, and the convenience of using it as a spray made the application quick. However, the significant downside is the strong and unpleasant odor associated with apple cider vinegar, but you can explore alternatives such as mixing it with essential oils to help mask the smell. In my case, I discontinued using this method due to the overpowering smell and the potential for skin redness if the spray was overused.

7. LED Light for Acne

I started using an LED light therapy device for my acne treatment, which initially resulted in a reduction in acne, even in persistently problematic areas. For two months, I experienced notable improvements in my skin texture, with a smoother complexion. However, I have recently noticed a diminishing effectiveness compared to the initial stages of usage.

Nevertheless, I remain content with the LED light therapy, as I have perceived a mild, yet indicative, burning sensation during treatments, implying its functionality. Furthermore, there has been a discernible reduction in acne when comparing usage to non-usage, without any negative effects. Scientific studies support the efficacy of LED light therapy for skin rejuvenation, indicating potential anti-aging benefits with little to negligible side effects.

Another convenience of this therapy is its suitability for use during brief periods such as a nap. It is important to note that LED light therapy devices can be relatively expensive, particularly if you opt for mainstream, popular, and well-known brands, with some exceeding $500. However, there are less expensive options available. For example, I purchased a less well-known and more affordable device in the $250 range.

You must be cautious when purchasing online, as counterfeit products with inadequate light intensity may be prevalent. Overall, while I found LED light therapy to be beneficial, its effects may be subtle and not easily quantifiable. Hence, I have decided not to rank this product too high. Also, I never went to a skin care clinic to try the LED light either because I felt the price you paid to get an hour session was not worth it and it is better just to buy your own LED light for home use.

8. Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is known to be effective in treating acne and seems to work similarly to benzoyl peroxide with fewer side-effect. However, I have personally faced a common issue with salicylic acid products is that they are always too sticky. This stickiness and slimy texture make it uncomfortable for me to continue using it.

Consequently, I often end up discarding the product before ever finishing it. Due to this inconvenience, I rank this product low on my list. However, if you have less oily skin that can tolerate the stickiness, salicylic acid can still be a beneficial product to help erase your pimple. The product I used was a droplet that you put on your face and keep on throughout the day. Maybe you will have better luck trying some alternative products like toners or cleansers made with Salicylic Acid.

9. Accutane

The impact of this particular pill on acne is undeniably potent, effectively halting its progression. For a long time, Accutane was the go-to acne treatment but as time went by its side-effect started to catch up with people. Its simplicity of use is another attractive feature, as it offers a convenient solution for those struggling with acne.

While higher doses were traditionally prescribed, individuals with mild acne can explore the option of a lower dose, such as 10 mg, and even adopt an alternate-day usage regimen. Some people were even trying extreme methods to lower the side-effect by trying to freeze the pills and cut them in half to only take 5 mg as the 5 mg wasn’t for sale anywhere.

However, I am compelled to offer a strong word of caution against using this medication due to its potential risks. In fact, I recall hearing about a recent class-action lawsuit filed against the manufacturer as a result of the numerous harmful side. The gravity of the situation became apparent to me when a law firm contacted me inquiring about my use of the medication, suggesting that I could be a part of the lawsuit. Regrettably, I was purchasing the medication from Canada without a prescription, as obtaining one from a doctor proved challenging due to the well-known side effects.

It is important to recognize that many individuals, like myself, have resorted to desperate measures in their pursuit of clear, acne-free skin, as acne can significantly destroy one’s self-confidence. One of the most concerning issues is its extreme drying effect on the skin, which can cause significant discomfort. Additionally, the constant cracking of lips is a common and bothersome side effect experienced by many. It is crucial to carefully consider the potential drawbacks and evaluate the cost-benefit ratio before incorporating this medication into your acne treatment.

Moreover, it is worth noting that in the past, legal action in the form of a class-action lawsuit was initiated against the manufacturer of this pill. This legal action emerged as a result of the unpleasant and sometimes harmful side effects experienced by individuals who had used the medication. It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of thoroughly researching and understanding the potential risks associated with any medication before deciding to include it in your skincare regimen.

10. Doxycycline

Based on my personal experience, I found this medication to be completely ineffective in treating my acne. I would strongly advise against using this medication specifically for acne. It is important to note that everyone’s experience may vary, and what didn’t work for me might have different results for many others.

Doxycycline is an antibiotic, it is worth noting that using antibiotics for acne treatment might not be too effective and come with many negatives. Using antibiotics long-term can lead to antibiotic resistance. Additionally, using antibiotics for an extended period can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the body.

How do I get rid of 100% acne?

Acne is a condition that may persist throughout a person’s life, and it may not 100% disappear entirely. Although it is often said that acne tends to improve with age due to hormonal changes, it is also possible for individuals in their fifties or even older to still experience acne. This can occur if the body continues to produce excess oil or if other factors, such as genetics or environmental influences, contribute to acne.

Considering these factors, it is safe to say that pimples may never completely go away for some individuals. However, it doesn’t mean that you have no control over acne. By maintaining a consistent skincare routine, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and seeking professional advice if needed, you can effectively manage and reduce acne flare-ups.

What age is acne the worst?

Acne tends to be the worst during the teenage years, particularly when going through puberty. This period is characterized by rapid growth and hormonal fluctuations, which can disrupt oil production in the skin. During puberty, the body undergoes significant changes, these hormonal changes can stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, creating an environment conducive to acne formation.

Conclusion

If you have been struggling with acne for as long as I have, or even longer, I hope reading this today has provided some help in your battle. I sincerely hope that you find your own solution to effectively erase your acne problem. I understand that it is not an easy journey, but I wish you the best of luck.
