“To infiltrate Belch’s factory, you must first learn the password (easy enough) and also learn something much more elusive: something called patience. Scott and I struck our heads over and over again with our controllers and threw them against the TV screen while we tried to figure out how to get in the damn factory door. Luckily, the EarthBound Player’s Guide tipped us off: You have to stand in front of the door—which is obscured by the early-era video game style waterfalls—and not touch a single button for three minutes. I can understand how humans landed on the moon, but I cannot understand how anyone figured this out on their own.”

“If we were to take EarthBound's early hours as material evidence of Shigesato Itoi's impressions of American culture, we would have to consider cruel parents, small-town gangs, abusive cops, weak-willed politicians, usurious property owners, and murderous religious cults as the case.
