Daynote - Tue 14 Oct

Last morning of dogminding this morning and a brief gallop around Leith Links, the large and beautiful stretch of park just to the east of Leith's core. I had to get back fairly quick this morning though, in order to post about SOLITARY AGENTS being in the Waterstones 25% off October sale! Grab a bargain!

Daynote - Tue 14 Oct

ON DECK: Some edits came back from my publisher last night, so I'm working on those. We're down to the last few tweaks and changes and consistency type stuff, so it's careful, slow work. But I'v...

An absolutely stunning bluebird sky day today and the mercury has decisively dipped into 'chilly'. I even saw my breath as I walked this morning. It was lovely. Lots of does and fawns in the trees too, doing that deer thing of holding perfectly still while being completely visible. Plus Poppy The Labrador bounded across half the car park this morning to say hello, which is always a joyful way to start the day.

ON DECK: A really nice 1,768 words today on PROJECT DRIFT. I'm writing this draft a lit...

Good morning - I'm still in transit, on my way back home after a lovely day in Bristol. I also signed copies in Bristol and London, met some awesome booksellers and took care of a lot of writing admin, blurb reading and sundry tasks while I was bimbling about the English countryside. I love trains.

The above shot was taken from the dining car of the Caledonian Sleeper at Carstairs, which is the stop where the Edinburgh and Glasgow portions of the train are split apart. The whole town and surround...

Daynote - Thu 25 Sep

An early start this morning, jumping off the sleeper from Edinburgh and into a very pleasantly cool London morning. I'm actually in Bristol today during the day, though back to London this evening to catch the sleeper home (and likely sneak in some book signings on my way through). Right now, though, I'm waiting for my train to depart Paddington, so there's time for a quick daynote before I settle down to spend the 90 minute trip to Bristol writing.

ON DECK: Zero words so far, though I normally m...

Daynote - Wed 24 Sep

Bit of an unplanned late one last night; I got into an urgent beta read for a friend (more on that below) and wanted to finish it. In the past I'd have carried on and just sucked up the sleep loss, but as I get older I'll nearly always prioritise more sleep over getting out for a walk/writing etc. Lack of sleep just makes everything harder. So, no walk this morning and a curtailed writing session, but I've got the beta read done and I'm about to be on a bunch of trains, so I think I'll get a fai...

Another gorgeous morning out in the woods today, though a good 3-5°C cooler than yesterday, so that autumnal feeling was intensified. Geese flying overhead also lent a wintry air to proceedings. We first moved out here in October when winter was starting to bite, so for me this always feels like the end of another cycle. It's so, so nice to walk and watch the woods changing day by day.

ON DECK: A solid 1,157 words this morning on PROJECT DRIFT - I'm writing something with a slower pace and it's q...

Daynote - Mon 22 Sep

A stunning morning today and the first truly autumnal day of the year - leaves turning on the trees, crisp coolness and bright, gorgeous, low early morning sunlight. An absolute tonic to get outside.

Yesterday I went on a fantastic e-bike tour of East Lothian with my brother and his partner Milena. This was a joint birthday present for my brother and I (we're fraternal twins, as you can likely tell from the video below) from the rest of our family and we finally got it together to do it and it w...

Daynote - Fri 19 Sep

Good morning and happy Friday! I am finally starting to feel semi-normal again, I've fixed all of my various alarms and reminders and got back to my usual sleep schedule, which meant I finally got out for a walk this morning. I was rewarded with an oddly balmy but very autumnal walk, where I saw three deer, got snuffled by Poppy the Labrador and breathed some very fresh air. Lovely.

ON DECK: An excellent 1,660 words this morning, so I'm definitely getting back in the groove. I've extended out my ...
