Beth Winegarner is a journalist who has written for the New Yorker, Wired, USA Today, Mother Jones, the San Francisco Examiner, the San Francisco Chronicle, the SF Weekly, and the San Mateo Daily News. She has contributed music writing to the San Francisco Chronicle, PopMatters, Addicted to Noise, BAM, ROCKRGRL, and Invisible Oranges. She writes news tips for journalists at Poynter.org. At Backward Messages, she blogs about the teen subcultures that lead to moral panics. She has written several books, including "Beloved," “Read the Music: Essays on Sound," and "Sacred Sonoma." Her new book, "The Columbine Effect: How five teen pastimes got caught in the crossfire and why teens are taking them back," is out Dec. 1.
