I have been writing about LGBT issues, popular culture, health and medicine since the early 1980s. I built my career as a journalist over more than two decades in Washington, D.C., after earning a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University. Besides my independent journalism, I have put my reporting and storytelling skills to use in staff positions as senior editor, staff writer, and publicist for national and global HIV-AIDS projects and public health organizations.

My 1999 book Victory Deferred: How AIDS Changed Gay Life in America (University of Chicago Press) represented the culmination of years of reporting on the HIV-AIDS epidemic and its impact on gay men in particular. Kirkus Reviews called Victory Deferred "the most

Right now I am reviewing the page proofs and developing the index so the nonfiction book will be as useful to my readers as I can make it.

Of course I will be reading the magazines I subscribe to--including Time, Yankee, Rolling Stone, National Geographic, New York, and Men's Health--and the daily newspapers I read online (The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times) and in print (Norwich Bulletin and The Day, the two local daily newspapers in eastern Connecticut, where I live).

And I know I will find other books to read. In fact, I just recalled that I am reading Rev. Mel White's book HOLY TERROR, about the lies told about LGBT people by fundamentalist Christians. Rev. White was one of the nearly 100 men and women I interviewed for STONEWALL STRONG.(less)

Just had a writerly moment, I guess you could say.

Been writing about my early years as a young journalist in Washington, for the opening section of STONEWALL STRONG, the book I'm writing about gay men's resilience.

This year marks 30 years since my first big feature story on AIDS--"The Survivors," a cover story in Washington City Paper--and the beginning of my career reporting on the epidemic... Read more of this blog post »
