7 Tips for Avoiding Distractions
for the easily distracted writer.
Put your phone on silent and face down.
Disconnect from the internet. If you can’t, be stringent about full-screening your writing program.
Clean your desk or move the clutter out of sight.
Make sure you have everything you need (a drink, a granola bar, your notebook, pencil, eraser) before you sit down.
Wear comfy clothes and sit in a comfy chair.
Set a goal (time, page count, word count) and establish a reward (a nap, a nice shower, a smoothie). Hold yourself to both.
Don’t feel bad if you get distracted, just get back on track.
Good luck friends! You can do it!
Find The Word Tag
Okay, so I was forever ago by @writeontheedge. Thank you so much for the tag, I love being tagged in these things. I just let this post live in my drafts for far too long, so finally here it is, searching for my wip #TIGER
Heart
“Chloe’s mouth was dry from hanging open and her
heart was thundering, as if she were stalked prey, cornered, destined to be
a snack.”
Darkness
“She waited for darkness. She waited for it to be
over.”
I know that last one was two sentences but they are small so deal. I TAG @jaceykdew, @justanotherwriteress, and @writerkaitlinm to do the words Last and Tried.
P.S. Sorry if I tag you too much or never, I try to tag different followers who I know are writers here and there but can’t remember who I tagged last.

hey writeblr! Talk to me, I’m curious: what’s one trope you love but never put in your own writing, and what’s one trope you hate that everyone seems to love?
I’ll go first: I’m a sucker for Terry Pratchett naming conventions (Drum Billet, Ella Saturday) and I hate the “kindly old man spouts cryptic manipulative shit” trope (Yoda, Dumbledore)
Oo! Oo! I love anti-hero type main characters that are kind of awful people but are so cool/expert/entertaining you forgive a lot of their sins a bit. Especially if they’re British, apparently. (Peaky Blinders with Cillian Murphy, Taboo with Tom Harty)
This isn’t quite a trope I dislike, but I dislike it when it’s done a certain way. I hate it when the romantic intrest plot has unbelievable and unnessisary conflict for the sake of keeping the tension. Like character A and B have been THIS CLOSE to kissing for like a thousand chapters, but they arnt right now because they’re angry at each other for something absolutely petty and stupid. Conflict is only entertaining if it makes sense and is reasonable, otherwise it just feels like plot convenience.
how to make up new words
i made up some new words for my story and now think i’m qualified to give advice this is helpful for fantasy and nonsense literature
borrow words from your language forget greek and latin we already have those where are my tamil words, norwegian words, sotho words
try translating long words from your native language and keep it as one word like waterreflection or loveofmylife
or you can start with a portmanteau which is essentially smashing two words together like ship names
follow a few linguists’ blogs and learn about phenomena like verbing and contrastive reduplication
try random stuff like using obscure place names as verbs or colours as adverbs
keep it meaningful but you could also take a leaf out of roald dahl’s book and make it funny
onomatopoeia!!!!!!
read the jabberwocky for inspiration every word in it sounds just right
ya know my boy shakespeare invented some (okay many) words? here’s how he did
here’re two huffopost lists of words invented by milton and dahl
and finally here’s a guardian article on making up words
that’s it! have fun and drop into my ask box if you invent cool words! If you found this helpful, consider buying me a virtual coffee to keep me writing.
