“We were on the verge of hope when our journey was halted, not by dogs or pattyrollers, but by fire. Our dreams hang stagnant for centuries, till Girl comes and stirs the dust. She smells our sorrow, hears our songs echoing inside her mind. For all her life, when she thinks of us, Girl's heart will beat in rhythm to one word:
Almost.”
Lisa Williamson Rosenberg, Embers on the Wind

“Pam writes: I’ve been waiting years. Our DNA matched as mother and daughter, so I know it’s you. Your last name is the same as my case manager’s. I believe she’s the one who took you. But you were my Ayesha Kaye.”
Lisa Williamson Rosenberg, Embers on the Wind

“How strong they had been—all of them!—ancestors of today’s African Americans. How many of them had untold stories, legacies erased into oblivion?”
