Throw away your clock.

My first career was as a transportation planning consultant. I defined not just billability but employability by how much time I worked each day. Unlearning this practice has been one of the most difficult parts of becoming a writer, because my inner task master glories in calling me nasty names when I'm not being "productive." That said, I quickly discovered that asking inspiration to show up every day on time for at least so long was a great way to discourage it, so now I try to write what comes and be grateful for it. It's like seeing an old friend and getting them with "hey! how are you! I'm so glad you're here!" as opposed to "it's been so long since I've seen you—how come we don't get together more?"(less)

A sense of obligation on the part of the writer must be like a bad case of BO to the muse, so if I am in an "I have to" spirit, I've learned not to expect creativity to join me. Getting a change of scene can help perk things back up—even just taking a walk, or cleaning the kitchen—there have been so many times I've walked away from a page and am just clicking on my dog's leash or loading a plate into the dishwasher when a new line comes and I race back to my laptop ending up with pages of a whole new scene I would be nowhere close to if I had just forced myself to sit there until something worked.(less)
