Project Healing Waters - Fly Fishing & Mending the Line
I was honored to be a guest acting in support of Project Healing Waters- Fly Fishing at a special showing of the feature film “Mending the Line” at the VFW in Georgetown this weekend.
To my mind this is a perfect partnership between this impactful organization and meaningful movie.
As a U.S. Marine veteran who has struggled with PTSD for decades and who uses fly fishing and my connection with nature to heal- both Project Healing Waters and Mending the Line are dear to my battered heart. And I am honored that my first book, Casting Forward plays a role in this movie as do some of my words and life choices.

My Journey to Jackson Hole!

This Thursday I will board yet another airplane, this time on my way to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to share some time with my friends Randall and Mary Kauffman.
I once again am amazed at the kindness and generosity of the wonderful people I am coming to know in this tribe we all share.
I am humbled and honored by each friendship, and, I do my best each time to share our story in a manner that does some justice to the lessons learned, and memories created.
I am still processing the truly magical time I shared with my dear friend Emily Whitlock just a few weeks ago. As long as I may live I will never forget the morning coffees by the trout stream, the evening's of bass fishing on ponds and a beautiful Ozark Mountain stream, or us taking turns shooting Dave's super cool 22 lever action rifle off the back porch, (And yes - Emily outshot this Marine), or the late evening wine and music as chatted about life and loss, and sang along to John Denver and Gordon Lightfoot songs.
These are the friendships and moments that matter in life.
We need to focus on them and on the good we can do in this world during our brief, brief, brief, stay.
There is so much human ugliness, ignorance, and cowardice in this world that we cannot look away from - but we must instead, choose to be its opposite, every day.
We must band together as one tribe to show how much more human kindness, wisdom, and courage exists and how those attributes can prevail. Light extinguishes darkness.
This journey to Wyoming is the final trip outside of Texas for me to take in the completion of my fourth book - Casting Homeward.
The only thing that remains will be for me and my friend Cari Ray - Fisher of Zen, to fish what remains of the Llano and Devils Rivers here in my beloved and imperiled Texas Hill Country.
I will of course, do my best for each of you who choose to read my books and essays, for Lyons Press -my wonderful publisher, and for this beautiful planet that is being used to death. We can do better... together.

Reel Recovery Event!

I will be flying up to Denver to attend the 20th Anniversary Celebration for Reel Recovery!
It is my honor to have been invited to be a member of the Board of Directors for this wonderful organization that uses the healing power of fly fishing and friendship and mentorship to help men who are living with cancer.
My personal experience with skin cancer has been minor compared to the journeys others have undergone. But I know what it is to wait for biopsies and undergo treatment and wonder about the outcome. If nothing else, these experiences help me to understand and empathize. What I do know is how important it is to have opportunities like those that organizations like Reel Recovery offers.
I’m looking forward to supporting this effort at the Denver event!
Hope to see you there!
Our 20-Year Anniversary Celebration is October 5th in Denver!
Online bidding is now open for our Auction, and we've got some great items.

I can hardly believe that this is where I will be in just a few days… the adventure continues!

My buddy Bob White should be there today as he will be spending two weeks at Bristol Bay Lodge- I am too much of a homebody to be gone for two weeks.
I will leave for Alaska on Friday and arrive at the lodge the next morning.
For Bob, this is yet another homecoming as he has been guiding and residing around Bristol Bay for a couple decades.
For me, this is a trip of a lifetime.
For you… you will eventually be able to go with us as you read the stories in my fourth book: Casting Homeward.
Namaste Y’all…
Keep Casting Forward Y'all!

Life is a brief beautiful journey…
I am determined not to spill a drop of this magical elixir nor squander a moment on the foolishness of human drama. I want to carry the light and share it whenever and wherever I can. There are still “things in the basement” to give away and let go of and others to cherish. It’s important that we understand the difference.
The sun is shining through the trees. The songbirds surround my feeder and play joyfully in the birdbath. I console a few friends who are hurting and remind them that as in past moments, joy will come to our hearts again.
We must find the magic in this moment.Everything, including our lives, is transitory, temporary, and transitional.
“We are such stuff as dreams are made on; and our little life is rounded with a sleep.”
