News? News. News?

Gentle, loyal readers:
I had hoped, by this point in the summer of 2017, to have news to share regarding what's coming next in my publishing career.
Sadly, so far, all I have are pins and needles.
I'm sitting on them.
Good news (since this is Goodreads) will surely follow, but only in its own good time.
Patience...is a virtue? A given name? A trait all but impossible to accept?

Upon the Flight of the Queen by Howard Andrew Jones
Rate this book

The first thing to know is, this is the middle book in a trilogy. I highly recommend starting at the beginning, or you’ll be left behind early, and that would be unfortunate. “Upon the Flight of the Queen” has a lot to recommend it. Kobalin, for one

The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler
Rate this book
Clear rating
It's hard to imagine a better book about a club devoted to the reading of Ms. Austen.
Fowler skewers her characters with love and affection, but is no less severe with them for that. Like Austen, she finds fault at every turn, just as the characters f

Elizabeth Costello by J.M. Coetzee
Rate this book
Clear rating
An astonishingly effective portrait of fictional writer Elizabeth C., who may or may not be a stand-in for Coetzee. The Western Canon is on full display, along with the many gaps in this poor reader's education. Worth re-reading, perhaps more than on ...more

Wry and rowdy, this is the sort of book that gives academia a very bad name indeed. But then, sometimes academia deserves a swift, mulish kick. Now, if you're expecting dense plotting, or the thrills and (cheap) chills of serial killers, look elsewhe ...more

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
Rate this book
Clear rating
I last read this book when I was twelve or thirteen. As a working writer now pushing fifty, I found the most fascinating aspect of the re-read was the gravitational pull of Huck Finn. It's supposed to be Tom's book (and so it is), but Twain's attenti ...more

To peruse the book jacket of Station Eleven, one would think that this novel has a traditional main character (Kirsten). This, like the utterly misleading picture on the front––these yellow tents and that curving wall never crop up, so far as I can t ...more

A Friend of the Earth by T. Coraghessan Boyle
Rate this book
Clear rating
I admire Boyle's short stories very much, and have read a wide array of them over the years, but this is my first foray into his novels. My response? This is pedal-to-the-metal stuff, furious metaphors flying in all directions. And no wonder. Leading ...more

When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr
Rate this book
Clear rating
A wonderful book, and one I read aloud to my eleven-year-old (boy), who also loved it. Sharp, unfussy prose. Clear stakes. Real hilarity (especially in the writing-French-essays sequence). Highly recommended. Well done, Ms. Kerr.

The Great Fire by Shirley Hazzard

I make it a policy these days to avoid reading book jackets until after finishing the book itself. Having closed the covers on Ms. Hazzard's THE GREAT FIRE (and Goodreads, why can't I use italics, which is the proper way to indicate titles?), I was s ...more
