But sometimes fictional worlds and characters can move people in ways that speeches and policies and laws cannot. Dr. Zeus, a clever but narcissistic physician, savors his ability to drug and sexually abuse his sixteen-year-old patient, Diane, but he is ultimately undone by her strength and resilience as well as by the persistence of a medical board investigator.
A member of my writing group asked me why I chose a sixteen-year-old girl to be one of the three narrators. I had to think for a minute about that. What a strange choice! But Diane was a minor character in one of my previous novels, and I guess I just liked her and wanted to her in action again.(less)
