Kyen lay unconscious in Ewin’s cot. The chair stood upright again, the broken glass sat swept in a pile, and a patch covered the hole in the reed wall.
Ewin crawled about on his knees, collecting fallen ores with his good arm and throwing them into a bucket. The ores made a tinny thunk every time one hit the bucket.
Kyen groaned and opened his eyes. Putting a hand to the back of his head, he tried to sit up.

The Kingmaster – Chapter 3
Kyen stared hard, brows pinched together, at the sign above the smithy.
The traffic of the rural Veleda village passed to and fro around him, parting around him as he stood in the middle of the street. The passersby shot him irritated glares and let off offended huffs. Kyen stood oblivious to them though with all his focus fixed upon the sign.
The sign bore a hammer and chisel crossing one another. Beneath it, a blacksmith’s lean-to shaded forge, anvil, and hammering smith.

The Kingmaster – Chapter 2
More screams pierced the air overhead.
The two swordsmen drew their blades and dashed together into the inn. They ran through the common room for the stairs. Finn paused long enough to yell, “Everyone outside!”
The rumbles, thuds, and screams from above drew uncertain glances from the dining nobles, and at Finn’s shout they abandoned their meal to crowd out the door.
Finn dashed up the stairs on Kyen’s tail.

More screams pierced the air overhead.

Kyen of Avanna stood in the shadow of his own statue. A faraway look clouded his stormy gray eyes as he gazed up at his own likeness.
From up on its pedestal, the statue smiled back. He posed with his cloak flared out behind him, an arm rested on his longsword, all elaborately worked in stone.
