Gavin Gardiner’s lifelong love of horror didn’t manifest into his Amazon bestselling debut novel, FOR RYE, until his early thirties. Between its completion and publication, he wrote a novella, several short stories, and a selection of non-fiction articles and analysis pieces. These can be found in various online publications and in print via:

Before he threw himself into the writing game, Gavin dedicated much of his teen years and twenties to the pursuit of music. Although the nightmares he’s since committed to the page have garnered more attention than his songs ever did, he hopes to one day return to music. The writing of horror, however, is here to stay.

My aim was to present to the reader a character that would undergo a wildly dramatic, yet somehow organic, change throughout the events of the novel. It was this simple seed that led to an ultimately challenging and morally complex book - at least I hope it is these things.

The story started out as a horror writer going out to find dark inspiration for their novel by committing atrocious acts. FOR RYE did eventually incorporate this idea, but ended up speeding off into something else entirely.

The core idea that set the novel in motion, however, this idea of a character effectively transforming throughout the course of the book - a transformation that would make the reader question everything they thought they knew about the line between good and evil - forever remained the backbone of the story.

So I got the idea for the novel from the possibilities of transformation, and this guided the story into the nightmare it exists as today.(less)

"Fun and Sinister Romp

The Sixth Amulet is a revised and rereleased title, and M. A. Maddock did a great job on the revision. She has created a colorful world of good and bad, whose characters battle against both everyday struggles and a growing evil.
