The proven and the unproven…

I’m not referring to a mathematical conjecture like Fermat’s last theorem (this was proven by Wiles and Taylor, by the way). I’m referring to presidential mettle and resolve and the current debate on whether Mr. Obama has them and should tout them, and whether Mr. Romney ever can have them. Let’s face it: Mr. Obama’s mettle and resolve are proven; Mr. Romney’s are not, beyond his desire to do something his father never could do. While Mr. Romney has tried to belittle the leadership role of hi...

Return to the Articles of Confederation?

I suppose I should have expected it. The hypocritical conservatives on the Supreme Court, Messrs. Roberts, Scalia, Thomas et al (nice alphabetical order there), two-bit character actors on the highest judicial stage, who pretend to be true constitutionalists, are ripping the Constitution apart in order to return this country to the Articles of Confederation. Like Freddy Krueger wannabes, they are leaving the Constitution’s entrails on the Court’s marble steps. It is doubtful that American dem...

The Justice Department versus Apple…

Up to now, I’ve been confining my opinions on the lawsuit of the U.S. Justice Department versus Apple and the gang of five of the Big Six to my “News and Notices.” While I’m definitely biased about this and my blog is basically op-ed, I started out thinking that this case is small potatoes compared to some of the bigger issues of our day. Now I’m not so sure that the case is not a big, messy pommes de terre au gratin with lots of cheese where cleanup will be a challenge to any dishwasher, hum...

If you can’t trust the Secret Service…?

You’re probably like me. All my life I’ve considered the Secret Service to be a role model for what a federal law enforcement agency should be. What do I make out of the news from Cartagena (by the way, to ABC and other newscasters, it’s pronounced “car-tah-hay-nah” not “car-tah-hay-knee-ya”—the ubiquitous Spanish ñ is NOT present)? I’ll tell you how I feel. I feel exactly like I did with the drug scandal in major league baseball (the m, l, and b no longer deserve to be capitalized). The diff...

News and Notices from the Writing Trenches #25…

#145: What’s next on my agenda? While I’ve been thinking lately that my muses have discovered tasers, torturing me and Donna Carrick of Carrick Publishing to release my next books, I want to slow down a bit and think about what my next releases will be. I have a plethora of old and new ideas. It’s good to reassess which ones I will follow through on in the immediate future. Here are some of my thoughts.

I liked both my old character, the DHS agent Ashley Scott, and the new one, Mossad agent Ju...

Review of H. Prévost’s Desert Fire…

(H. Prévost, Desert Fire, ISBN 978-1-927361-16-0)

Someone has probably said it before, but excellent young adult (YA) novels are just excellent novels where the most of the protagonists are young adults (12-18 years old). They can be in any genre—romance, thriller, sci-fi, you name it. Moreover, especially if they’re excellent, they can appeal to adults too. In fact, the ages of the protagonists are often irrelevant to readers’ enjoyment or lack of it. For example, I often wondered about Rowli...

An early Mother’s Day toast to all working mothers…

The silly to-and-fro between Republicans and Democrats, the first claiming Mr. Obama is out-of-touch with women and the second lacking the you-know-what to tell them to focus on real women’s issues, has motivated me to stand up and cheer for all mothers out there. Well, maybe not for Mrs. Romney, Mrs. Bush, and Mrs. Obama. Mrs. Romney and Mrs. Bush married into political royalty and have led a life of leisure and privilege compared to most American moms. Mrs. Obama married into academic and p...

News and Notices from the Writing Trenches #24…

#141: In case you missed them: Angels Need Not Apply, the sequel to The Midas Bomb, and Sing a Samba Galactica, the sequel to Survivors of the Chaos, have been released through Carrick Publishing. Just in time for that school holiday with the children…ha! Nevertheless, good spring and summer reading, whether on the porch with a mojito or at the beach with a piña colada.

#142: Wish I could spruce myself up as easily as Monkey C Media did my website! Check it out. The “Steve’s Writing” webpage w...

Mr. Obama’s Waterloo – which crisis will it be?

Gas prices, Afghanistan, Europe, the SC and healthcare, Republican super PACs—take your pick. Mr. Obama is in a free-for-all fight for the American presidency, now that Sanctum Santorum decided to avoid the embarrassment of losing again in Pennsylvania. It doesn’t matter that the GOP will end up with a weak candidate who can’t figure out where he stands on issues (I’ll give Mr. Santorum that—he was generally consistent). U.S. voters are notoriously punitive. Moreover, they look for a scapegoa...
