It took ten years to research The Calligrapher's Daughter. Mostly I read memoirs written about and from the era, and history books. I also interviewed elders, visited Korea, and found primary sources such as maps, photographs, and artwork from the era. The critical issue with incorporating research into fiction is to never let the research take over the story or the character. It must be seamless, embedded in character and setting, not imposed by the writer. Good luck with your work. Cheers. (less)

It covers an important and lead-up history of missionaries in Korea, both North and South, and their critical role in American early relationships in Korea, specifically the Weems and McCune families, whos... “It was pointless to worry about problems I didn't yet have.”
Eugenia Kim, The Calligrapher's Daughter

“She kept her voice gentle and her eyes down, for without such softening traits, Haejung's mother had often said, a woman's presence would be like a thorn and not a flower.”
Eugenia Kim, The Calligrapher's Daughter

“I sipped, thanking the particles of tea leaves for absorbing the sun’s heat on dewy terraced mountains, growing fat and lustrous, then drying in the same heat, preserving God’s grace in a fragile, fragrant medium for me to drink at this table.”
